They will be in Paris next week. But so are Ornette Coleman and Anita O'Day (not together ). Will try for those two...

Have started to listen to disc 1 of BFT 13 over the weekend. Excellent compilation which I enjoyed listening to. Will have to get back to it to identify several of the tracks. Track 1. Could not trace that 'Cotton Tail', a very good choice but cannot recall having heard this version before. Track 2. I have enjoyed that tune before (sounds like a familiar Duke Pearson composition) but failed to identify the specific version, Track 3. I am very familiar with this tenor/sax combination but need more time to ascertain the proper album, Track 4. No problem with that one for the obvious reasons. Track 4 from this album: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...l=Aoykqoayaiijb Track 5. I don't have that album but I'm pretty sure the tune is from that album (probably track 2): http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...l=A10zsa9wgy238 Track 6. The tune was familiar, I recognised that remarkable (and remarkably oscure) pianist. Track 14 from this album: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...l=A62jqeal64xf7 Track 7. A blank on that track. A Miles Davis clone who plays like Miles did not want to play any longer decades ago. Track 8. Great sax battle. I have enjoyed that album for years. Second tune from this session: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...l=Ajlkvikkhbbc9 Track 9. This must be one of the sides included in this anthology (and in other compilations) but could not identify the exact one: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...l=A8eanqj1uojja Track 10. I'm pretty sure this is an iberic pianist but have not identified the album yet. Track 11. The tune was familiar, Did not get the album which I heard and was not really impressed. Track 3 from that album http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...l=Abx8ibkj9jakc but the original version is so much better... Track 12. same as for track 3. I'm very familiar with this but could not identify it exactly yet. Track 13. Nice vocal. Not a great fan of the singer but that version is delightful. Opening track from this album: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...l=Axev8b5p4bsqf Track 14. That version is definitive. Number 20 from that classic: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...l=Azv0e4j172way I will identify several of the items (3 and 12 for sure) when I complete a search as soon as I have time. Many thanks to EKE BBB for providing the music. Very nice job. Will also check on the 2nd disc.

Artists Who Should Have Had a Mosaic...
brownie replied to Leeway's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
HORACE SILVER! There must be plenty of unreleased material from his various groups to fill a set! -
Jimmy Raney 'Live In Tokyo' (Xanadu). Excellent concert album by Raney with Sam Jones and Leroy Williams.
-
Yep, Portugal-Spain was pretty intense and Portugal made it to the quarterfinals. Nice game. As host country, the Portuguese team could not afford to be out of the tournament on the first round. Too bad for the Spaniards!

Happy Father's Day to Organissimo Dads
brownie replied to maren's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Not an Organissimo Dad but he has lots of fans here. From the South Florida Sun-Sentinel: Looks like Lou Donaldson had a very nice Father's Day! -
Have these on two separate Fresh Sounds CDs. Audio quality ranges from acceptable to pretty good. The music smokes throughout! Who wants to ignore the Messengers at Birdland with Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter, Bobby Timmons at that price?

I always assumed because of the scarcity of the black label pressings the green label came in the sixties. Can anyone post sequence of stereo labels and dates? I can't, sorry, but Bill Fenohr once gave me the same info that Dmitry states re:label chronology (but not sound quality), and if anybody would know about that kind of thing, it would be Bill. Don't want to step into Bill Fenohr's shoes but here is the info on Contemporary Records from an early version of Goldmine's Price Guide to Collectible Jazz: ''By 1959, Contemporary was issuing their mono albums in stereo with an 'S' prefix and the same last three digits as the 3000 monos: this included reissuing the Stereo Records titles with their original 7000 numbers.. The mono 3000 series received an 'M' prefix. The label was defunct through the late '60s, picking up again in the early '70s. New titles and reissues from the '70s have green labels; from the '80s, a light orange-gold label.''

There was that jewish migrant who came to France. His name was Katzman. When he applied for French citizenship, one official suggested he had his name changed to make his name sound less jewish. The man said no problem. Since his name was to be 'francised', he translated his name into French. And came with a new name 'Chat' (as in shah) and 'Lhomme'. The story was a big hit on the Parisian jewish radio station.

In addition to his celebrated work on Art Pepper, Shelly Manne, Sonny Rollins albums on Contemporary, some examples of Roy DuNann's recordings, all sounding amazingly natural: - Howard McGhee 'Maggie's Back In Town', - Teddy Edwards & Howard McGhee 'Together Again', - all four LPs by The Poll Winners (Barney Kessel, Ray Brown, Shelly Manne), - Victor Feldman 'The Arrival' - Jimmy Woods 'Awakening'. Here is a list of some of his recordings: http://ubl.artistdirect.com/music/artist/a...,425622,00.html As Sidewinder stated above: nothing against Rudy Van Gelder's work but DuNann was the Master!

Some more: - Mosaic (BN) - The Freedom Rider (BN) - Buhaina's Delight (BN) and an overlooked favorite 'The Jazz Messengers' on Columbia (with Donald Byrd, Hank Mobley, Horace Silver and Doug Watkins). Not sure this is available on CD right now but it has been reissued on LP. Just be aware that the list of essential Blakeys is very, very long...

They were the underdogs. Were led 0-2. Did not give up. Went on and on and faced strong opposition. I feel sorry for the Dutch but the Czechs got my vote. I'll try to be impartial next time France plays B)
-
DuNann was THE Best! If you go see him, please extend my warmed thanks for his achievements. I have quite a number of the Contemporary LPs and still marvel at the quality of his engineering. Some favorites are the Art Peppers, the Hampton Hawes, the Curtis Counces, not to forget the Don Ewells... There was a very nice interview of him in 'Stereophile' magazine about two/three years ago. He looked in pretty good shape.

Looks like couw has hoisted the Dutch flag tonight

Happy Father's Day to Organissimo Dads
brownie replied to maren's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I've told my son to skip Father's Day several years ago. Everyday is a celebration here! Somehow -
Very exciting end of game which saw the Dutch team defeated 2-3 by the Czechs. Wow! The Czechs deserved the victory!
-
It was nice to see the Latvians get on a sort of victory tour at the end of the match. The Germans are joining the list of major teams (France, England, Italy) that disappoint. Dutch team to be next?? Stepping over to the TV to watch them play the Czechs...

Since I enjoyed the OJC Steve White, I did not hesitate to get the 'Jazz Mad' Liberty LP when I found a copy a couple of years ago. Turned out to be a bit of a disappointment. The session never seems to take off. Don't think it was ever reissued. If you have to get one, the OJC reissue is the one to chase.
-
The Steve White Quartet date was missing from the box. It's worth chasing.
-
It's very good. Not a can't-live-without-it session but just short of being great. I have had a Japanese LP reissue of it for a long time and enjoy the combination of the two principals. Sound is excellent as befits Japanese reissues. Not sure the same applies to that FreshSound reissue. I had my share of disappointments with those...

Shorty Rogers and Jimmy Giuffre are on three tracks of the 'Jolly Jumps In' album. Like that one and 'Duo, Trio and Quartet' too.
-
This is an excellent date. Did not realize it could be rare which it might be since it was widely distributed over here. It was reissued in France in a lookalike cardboard jacket by Pathe Marconi in 1984. Max Roach and Stan Levey share drumming duties. Each play on four tracks. Max Roach is on'Facts About Max', 'Swingin' The Blues', 'Blues In the Night' and 'The Count's Blues'. Stan Levey is on the four others. There is no vocal by either Perkins or Cooper. Perkins is on the tracks with Max Roach, Coop is on the tracks with Levey. Sound on the reissue is not good, very filtered. Pathe Marconi reissued several Liberty albums at the time, including a Abbey Lincoln date.

'An Unsung Cat' is still listed as not being currently available at Amazon.com

Not on Disneyland, but there were two album by Tutti Camarata released on the Buena Vista label: 'Tutti's Trumpets' and 'Tutti's Trombones'. Had the trumpets LP years ago but the jazz content was not much. Although Frank Rosolino was among the trombone players on the second album, never bothered to search that one.
