London, oh yes! They distributed Riverside. That's how I got to hear the 'Monk Plays Ellington' and 'The Unique Monk' albums first, back in the late '50s before the original Riverside albums landed in France. I'm not sure they distributed Pacific Jazz in England. Vogue England had a deal with PJ if I remember well!

The 'Dizzy Gillespie on the French Riviera' album was released a decade ago on CD by Verve!. Checked the FNAC and Amazon.fr websites. It is listed as being no longer available.

Weizen, I had never heard of Ultra Disc until you asked. No idea if they are trustworthy. I very rarely shop online.

Did Francis Wollf ever take a bad photo?
brownie replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
In addition to the Rolleiflex 6x6 camera, Wolff also used a Leica camera from time to time. But most of the photos which were on the covers of the BN albums came from 6x6 negatives. Cropping from 6x6 negatives enables for much sharper images than with the 35mm format especially when they are to go on 12-in album covers which was what Wolff's photos were mostly used for. To add to Sheldonm remark about the use of flash, it was near standard procedure at the time for a photographer using a Rolleiflex 6x6 to click with one hand while the other hand aimed the flash in the chosen direction to give softer and more diverse values of light. Photos came out much better than with the regular flash attachment that went with the Rolleiflex and gave straight-on illuminations. As for Wolff's off photos, I would not put any blame on him for any non worthy photos. The man took an immense collection of incredible photos. I have been in the photo editing business now for some four decades and I will go on record to say that I do not know of any great photographer (and I have met and worked with a lot of those) who did not miss a number of photos. -
Barclay licensed from Prestige during the '5Os thru the early '60s. Riverside had a distribution deal with Fontana iFrance in the '60s. The Monk trio Barclay album came out during the early '60s. The Herman Leonard photo of Monk with a beret dates from 1953. Blue Note had a distribution deal with Vogue in the '50s. A number of BN 78s were issued in France on the Jazz Selection label which was part of Vogue. BN USA in turn issued a number of 10-inchers with sides recorded by Vogue (and Swing) in France, like the Sidney Bechet, Clifford Brown, Gigi Gryce, Lionel Hampton albums.

Other than an intermission announcement and some idle chatter here & there...is there any reason to go after that Japanese 3-cd box? .....or is the Riverside box pretty much as good as it gets? I did. I shouldn't! What's on the Riverside box is just fine (I have the LPs one).

I was late joining in for this BFT. I was very late receiving the discs which arrived while I was away from Paris for a couple of weeks. Found them when I returned last week. Now I am terribly late answering the forum. Gave disc 1 a quick hearing after opening the package and have had a good hearing this weekend. Discovering some new music which is always fine with me. I will have to be believed on blind faith but I managed to stay away from the BFT 8 forums and thought it would be more fun not to peek in at the answers. OK, here goes: There are two tracks I'm familiar with: - Track 10 that's Howard Johnson's take on Pharoah Sanders 'Lower Egypt'. Pharoah's version on his initial Impulse album was a huge favorite of mine. 'Nubia' was my second Howard Johnson purchase (after 'Gravity'). I love Howard Johnson sound on the baritone but I love him even better on the tuba. Very nice tribute to Sanders in any case, - Track 12 that was the easiest: McCoy Tyner's Fly With the Wind' Big Band CD on Birdology (was this distributed in the USA?) That was probably the last Tyner album I bought. Thought the original version on the 'Fly With the Wind' album on Milestone was the one best tune from an excellent album but the big band track made me want to give the full CD a rerun. I am pretty sure about Larry Young on track 3 but have not figured yet which session it comes for. Same goes for track 7 which sounds a bit like one of good old Yusef Lateef's dates. Will check further. Tracks 1 and 2 sound good but I will have to relisten to get clues on who's there, Tracks 4, I don't care that much about. No idea on that one, I'm in the dark also about track 5 but I love that one! This is totally new music to me, very exciting and will definitively add the album on my Want list when I find out what it is. Track 6, 8 and 9 did not ring any bells here but I like what I am hearing. Not really moved by track 11. I have heard better 'Nature Boy'. In any case an excellent mix. Many thanks, Jim. I'm planning to post fuller impressions (and hopefully more firm answers) before Jim's baby celebrates its first month!

Will Deus do a Dorian Gray when he gets to 100? -
Milan, two essentials Bill Perkins are the John Lewis/Perkins Pacific Jazz date 'Grand Encounter' and another Pacific Jazz album 'Bill Perkins Octet on Stage'. There are more excellent dates with him but these ones are just great. Bill Perkins was marvelous.

The score Mancini wrote for Welles' 'Touch of Evil' is reason enough to salute him in a jazz forum. One of the most effective use of music (and WestCoast jazz music to boot) in film history. The film is a masterpiece and the music is right up to masterpiece standards.

No idea about this. But he obviously used the flashlight very diligently! -

Not one of my favorites either. He took some awesome photos though. I bet Wolff used a great medium format camera, like Hasselblad 1000F. No Hasselblad for him, Francis Wolff was a Rolleiflex 6x6 faithful! -
I have had this Lester Bowie LP since it was published. Just gave it a spin. Great album which sounds just fine. No digital harshness. Glad I bought all those Black Saint/Soul Note vinyls when they were available. Vinyl lives. And last forever as long as you take good care...

There have been all kind of rumors about Albert Ayler's death. I never really believed in those. The Joe Mosbrook story sums up quite well what must have happened. I know that Albert Ayler was always concerned about his responsibilites toward his brother Donald who was 'different' (for lack of a more accurate word). The burden - and other problems - must have been unbearable at some point. A tragedy, in any case.

Happy birthday Claude Schlouch...

Oh mon Dieu! Talked to him on the phone yesterday without realising... Joyeux anniversaire, Claude! -
Hope the 'Cosmic Music' album was not the original one on the John Coltrane label. That would be a sort of jazz nation disaster!
