  1. Lucky Thompson plays on his 'Spot Session' composition only. The rest of the saxophone solos are by Gary Bartz who is uncredited on the album cover or in the liner notes. I have the Trip LP reissue of that pleasant session. Sound on that reissue is just about so-so.
  2. Why did Clifford Brown let Alice Powell drive that damn car on June 26, 1956?
  3. Amazing what I learn at Organissimo! Dmitry mentioned reading the book recently on the Now reading... thread of the Miscellaneous Non-Political forum. 'The Last of the Just' is a must read book. Jacques' mother is a very celebrated novelist too: Simone Schwarz-Bart. No idea that Andre and Simone's son was a jazz musician. I'll check his albums. Should be interesting.
  4. That will be coming soon. Weather expected to turn warm tomorrow

    Chief Bey dies

Chief Bey's widow collapses at funeral. From AP:
  7. April in Paris.. ONE MORE TIME! http://ndparis.free.fr/notredamedeparis/me...ame_webcam.html
  8. Marilyn Moore? Mmmmmmm! A favorite. She was married to Al Cohn when she made that 'Moody Marilyn Moore'. Am quiet fond of her singing but that may know be to everyone's taste. And the people backing here are outstanding: Joe Wilder on trumpet, Cohn on tenor, Don Abney on piano, Barry Galbraith on guitar.
  9. That's a very good price for this excellent set. Very nicely packaged too. Another recommendation for that one!
  10. About track 5 'Satin Doll' by Bud Powell. I did not identify that one immediately. I knew it was Bud but could not trace where it came from. I had that track on the Mythic Sound CD that has most of this 'Bud Powell in Paris' material. Things did not go very well at this session which was supervised by Duke Ellington himself. Bud Powell did not like the selection of Kansas Fields as the drummer. That selection was Bud's companion Buttercup's choice. Bud Powell was right. Kansas Fields is a pain throughout that session. Kenny Clarke would have been the perfect man for the occasion.
  11. Don't think soda is added. I would say it's natural fermentation. Just mentioning this sussmost has me longing for a taste! If I remember well, it originates in some parts of Dwitzerland only. If Ubu could take a break from his beerdrinking, he could shed some light on this important matter.
  12. Magnificient. And thanks again Alex. No wonder I could not figure out the last three. Not really familiar with these piano players. Not identifying that track 9 Nagasaki is hard to swallow. I love that first BN record. Can't figure out how I missed it. Won't change my unenthusiastic appraisal of the Bad Plus or Keith Jarrett. I just do not like KJ's piano playing, mouth wide open or shut!
  13. Jack Tracy who is posting here might shed some light on the Gilmore solos editing job. He was very much involved with those Limelight sessions...
  14. Tain't no Marian McPartland. Barbara Carroll it is! No luck on the bass player...
  15. Love the apple juice that's called 'Sussmost' in Switzerland. Found and drunk in Switzerland only. Good King Ubu probably drinks liters of the stuff. If he does not, he should. Will keep his cheeks rosy
  16. Blue Note Japan (King label) released the two Herbie Nichols 10-inch sessions on one LP (K18P-9272) that was part of the Blue Note Masterpiece series. That LP came out in 1983 a few years before the Mosaic set. With the best sound up till then on these piano tracks.
  17. If you have the RCA and the Blue Notes, you're pretty well set up. You should now look for the recordings Bechet made with Mezz Mezzrow for the King Jazz label in the mid-forties. They have been reissued by Storyville. Four CDs. Great music! I'll also recommend the Bechet-Martial Solal album. An unusual combination that turned surprisingly successful!

    Funny Rat

The Cafe Montmartre sessions were originally released on Danish Debut LPs. First one was 'Live at the Cafe Montmartre'. Second was 'Nefertiti, The Beautiful One Has Come'. This one had a Marte Roling cover which was 'adapted' from one of a series of Cecil Taylor photos I took back in 1965 (old story!). The full session was reissued on a double LP by Arista in 1975. The double LP was also issued under the title 'Nefertiti, The Beautiful One Has Come'. The content of the two LPs have appeared on a number of CD issues (on the Freedom and Black Lion labels). The Revenant CD has two additional alternates of 'D Trad That's What' and 'Call' that have not been issued before.
  19. 'No Limit' - another Contemporary available on OJC - was recorded shortly after 'the Trip'. With George Cables on piano again. Just as good. But there is no bad Art Pepper. Would suggest you check again on the pre-Trip Art Pepper albums. There is incredible music in those. Same goes for post-Trip albums. They're all superb. Will single out a personal favorite: the Galaxy 'Winter Moon' with strings.
  20. My fellow Clifford, all I can say is OH YES!!
  21. Mike, thanks for the recommendation of that John Lewis session. Found the Red Baron of this KC Breaks which fits with my recent reinterest in all things John Lewisian. Very nice session which I overlooked when it was released although I enjoyed the other John Lewis/Nancy Harrow album. Joe Kennedy Jr. is indeed an excellent player. Very inventive violin of the kind I like. The Benny Carter All Star date that Paul Secor mentioned looks like another worthy album. Might be difficult to get, that one!
  22. Fear and Loathing... The book was an experience. A good one! The film was an experience. A bad one! Stick to the book is what I say!
  23. I don't go to the big stores (FNAC, Virgin) usually. Best one of the lot for its excellent jazz section is the FNAC store on the Rue de Rennes in the Montparnasse area. Favorite stores are, they all are located in the 5th arrondissement on the Left Bank - Gibert, at 34 Boulevard Saint-Michel. Jazz section is on second floor (our etage 1). Good new and secondhand selections, - Jussieu Music, 5 rue Guy de la Brosse, a small street near Jussieu University. Jazz only, great selection, friendly shop, - Paris Jazz Corner, 5 rue de Navarre, opposite the Arenes de Lutece, jazz only also. very wide selection. can be expensive, - Crocojazz, 64 rue de la Montagne Sainte-Genevieve, right next to the Pantheon. Well stocked and very friendly. You should find something interesting in any of those stores.
  24. Great fan of Tardi, too. His illustrations of the Celine book are outstanding. Also recommended is 'La Der des Ders', a book on the First World War with text by Didier Daeninckx!
  25. Louis-Ferdinand Celine was a WWII collaborator, a fanatic anti-semite, one of the most despictable character ever. He is also one the best authors of the 20th Century. I hate him. His book 'Journey to the End of the Night' is a masterpiece, that I keep enjoying reading.
