  1. Oscar Peterson is a favorite here. The man could swing like hell with his trio or behind musicians and singers as diverse and as great as Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Charlie Parker, Billie Holiday, Ben Webster, Roy Eldridge, Stan Getz and literally hundreds of others. One OP trio I loved was the one with Herb Ellis and Ray Brown. If you want to hear the quintessence of Peterson's ability to swing check the 'OP at the Stratford Shakespearean Festival' or 'The OP Trio at Concertgebouw' (recorded in Chicago, not Amsterdam) albums on Verve. Or any of the MPS albums he recorded in the '60s (Tjobbe already mentioned those). Not sure it is available but there is an excellent 6CD box 'Oscar Peterson in Concert' that came out in the '90s on the RTE label. It had excellent sound from various concerts played in Paris between 1957 and 1969. A little know box with lots of splendid moments.
  2. Same here. I like the music. Not essential but enjoyable match of Miles and Jimmy Forrest.
  3. Alfa Romeo!! At one time my dad owned a 1974 GTV and a 1975 Spider. The GTV was kept until the mid-eighties. The car was very fun to drive. Mama Mia! Those Alfa Romeos!! First one was an Alfa 1300GTV coupe model bought secondhand which proved to be amazing. Had lots of fun with it. Then I got the 2000GTV version of it but our boy was born shortly after I purchased it. Took the wife and baby on long journeys with it. Problem was the back seat which was really for legless short people. Bags were piled on the second fronseat. Wife and baby were in the back. Never understoood why my wife wanted to change cars Should add that the beautiful twincams engine was used to warm the baby bottles during stops. When my better half wife gets angry, the episode is still mentioned. I'm sure that the Alfa made its next purchaser damn happy. Stuck with more sedate cars nowadays. And those speed limits eliminated a lot of fun out of driving...
  4. Holy mackerel! Tomorrow is the day he catches up on me
  5. I have more vices than I care to admit. Will stick to the number 3 limit: - fast cars, I have really slowed down on this but I started to drive back when there was no speed limits (yes, there was a time like that) and among my first cars were two Alfa Romeos that I could drive up to unmentionable speeds, - Havana cigars, have smoked these ever since I returned to civilian life several decades ago. Never cared for cigarettes but give me a good Havana to smoke and I am in vice heaven. The people around me tolerate the smell, - andouillettes, this could be compared to the chitlins from the South. The people around me do not tolerate that smell but it's pure yummy. Charles Mingus discovered the delicacy when he came to France and ate tons of those whenever he traveled here.
  6. I have nightmares like this Feel relieved when I wake up. Feel terrible for you. There seems to have been a lot of interesting vinyls in your list!
  7. Just saw a short sequence on this on French TV news. Anybody watched this? The whole thing sounds a bit confusing but the sequence was real funny!
  8. Love Leroy Vinnegar's contribution to 'I've Got The World on a String' on the Serge Chaloff 'Blue Serge' Capitol date. That session must have really been an incredible one! Vinnegar also contributed mightily to dozens of other great albums...
  9. Two other favorites: Dinah Washington 'You Go To My Head' Billy Eckstine 'Everything I Have Is Yours'
  10. Liner notes say: 'Original session produced by Leonard Feather for Blue Note Records. Produced for release by Michael Cuscuna. Recorded on July 25, 1960 at Radio Recorders, Los Angeles. Engineer: Rudy Van Gelder.'. The liner notes were written by Leonard Feather. That RVG recording mention looks odd. Strange that he was flown to LA to record the session.
  11. One non-BN early Three Sounds date I love is the 'Anita O'Day and the Three Sounds' album on Verve. Anita was in superb form and obviously enjoying having the Three Sounds along!
  12. Found these Japanese CDs (all in excellent condition) in one of the Paris shops, all for 12 euros (about $13): Irene Kral/Herb Pomeroy 'The Band and I' (UA/TOJC) Dexter Gordon 'Go' (BN/TOJC) David Ware 'Godspelized' (DIW) and all three volumes of the Kenny Drew produced MY CDs (out before on AlfaJazz): 'Hush A Bye', 'Sophisticated Lady' and 'A Child Is Born'.
  13. The AP story did not mention money. But the NEA site mentions a $25,000 fellowship award. This is the link: http://arts.endow.gov/honors/jazz/
  14. From AP:
  15. Hal Galper is the fourth one!
  16. It's the Phil Woods Quartet for sure. Bill Goodwin is the man slightly in the back next to him.
  17. I thought I was a senior member of this board but I was born Setember of 1953! I was all of 13 by then. And already knew too much about too little
  18. Whatever the cost will be, this is one box to get! Forget about this Spring, let's bring Autumn right away!
  19. Ever heard of Joe Kennedy Jr? I had heard about him and practically never heard him (except for his contribution to the Ahmad Jamal album 'Listen to the Ahmad Jamal Quintet' album from 1960 on Argo. Now I am digging immensely his 'Accentuate the Positive' CD date from 1962 which was released on CAP (Consolidated Artists Productions) a few years ago. With Toots Thielemans on guitar and harmonica, Richard Davis (Art Davis on several tracks) on bass and Grassella Olliphant on drums. Beautiful album. Kennedy plays jazz violin to perfection. The whole session swings. Check it out on this link: http://www.jazzbeat.com/html/accentuate.html A very happy surprise! Anybody has further recommendations on this great player?
