I've had good contact with both the assistant and Sid Gribbetz the long-term jazz host. I think we can prevent a great loss of jazz history. Can't say the same for Chris A.'s stuff.
-
In addition to whatever KCR recordings are in his house/apartment, I was told of a possible donation of Schaap interview tapes to some institution. No idea if there was progress there, and for that matter, will his assistant continue to digitize shows for Phil's website? The site needs (or at least the College of Jazz Knowledge part) to stay up and available.

Sad news though I suspected that his cancer battle wasn't going well because he had been so quiet on Facebook. It's been a while since he mentioned his troubles but the last update I recall, he stated more or less that the last treatment didn't get him into remission. He was a great help to my Percy France website so I'll always be grateful for that. And like when Chris Albertson died, there is surely a ton of material that was in his possession that should not be allowed to end up in a dumpster. I had contact with his assistant, Mr. Iselin, regarding Percy. I feel like I need to follow up with him, after a bit, about what happens to it. He said that Phil wasn't very well organized and it sounded like there was a stack of reel-to-reels recorded from the West End broadcasts (apparently liberated from WKCR), including at least one Percy France show. All of it must be saved.

PM coming. -
I was thinking exactly this ... Clifford yes, but Fats also, for artistry and similarly for too-soon passing.

Album Covers That Try To Tell You What To Do
Dan Gould replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Who are these people? That is the worst cover I've ever heard. -

Haven't been any new posts here after Delta arrived, but I definitely have an f-ed up situation. Scheduled delivery September 7 from Denver, Media Mail. Reached Jacksonville the morning of September 3rd. Didn't leave Jacksonville until September 5, and didn't make it to Tampa/Ybor City in the usual one day. It already shows as "Arriving Late" on this, the expected delivery day. That's total bullshit.

Lee Morgan - Complete Live at the Lighthouse
Dan Gould replied to Mark13's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
OK with a birthday coming up, you convinced me, especially with the Hargrove/Mulgrew thing with free shipping and same price as Amazon. Even though I am almost certain I had sworn off of MovieMars for some ill-fated order in the last few years. Or was that ImportCDs? Hmm, maybe it was MovieMars. Although the order seemed to go thru and I printed the page off the website with the order number. We shall see. -

So you have this 1971 recording? Or you were a go-between? I'd be curious just about the band members at that time, all the same as the Lighthouse and And/Or recordings? -

Just as I am trying to make sure that Percy France has a 'moment' in 2021. -

George (Dan) is getting upset! I did not anticipate quite so many glowing reviews. I know - I'll break down and buy it, then choose my favorite performances for my own personal 3 disc set. -
30 years after the fact he says it was great and fun yet he's never heard it. Note he didn't say "They didn't put that out?" I'd trust his judgement in the moment that it was recorded that it didn't really congeal the way he wanted it. I'd also trust Chuck's recollection of conversations that took place a lot closer to the recording date than this one.
-
Indeed. I would hope so ... Here's another question: Do huge-fingered guitarists understand just how much easier it is for them, and are they grateful for this physical gift that had nothing to do with the time spent practicing or honing their craft? Are they at all sympathetic to the not-so-physically gifted who also try to play? Asking for a friend.

Well in that case should I lock down January 2022?

Jazz Standards you never get tired of
Dan Gould replied to Soul Stream's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Receiving more Percy France recordings from the Smithsonian, and from a time when his set lists had "They Can't Take That Away From Me" which I definitely do not tire of, now or back when I heard it by Ella/Louis/OP. -
As these Fresh Sound things go, this is a pretty good combination. Getting the Higgins vocal out is worthwhile, and the Gloria Smyth record is pretty enjoyable, I've had it for a while. (And now that I think about it, I am virtually certain I used the Higgins vocal on a BFT, a long while ago.)

Well, truth be told, I did think Shelly Hack was quite cute, but Cheryl Ladd was the actress/singer/performer/public person at that formative stage of my life. So, YMMV.
-
To quote John McEnroe, you CANNOT be serious! Cheryl every day of the week. (And I wish I could recall Carson's put-down of Hack for her lack of, shall we say, assets, on the premier T&A show of the era, or at least this side of Three's Company.)

More unreleased Bill Evans from Resonance Records looming ahead ....
Dan Gould replied to soulpope's topic in New Releases
You could very well be right. Does Reel to Real make its nut from the LP market then? I do understand that's a partnership with Weeds. If these are guaranteed money-makers overall, why not toss some on Weeds' label? Doesn't really matter, I just want more of the greats and near greats that the 'detective' discovers, and less of The Greats. -

Maybe it's me but the Resonance/Zev fascination with Evans (and Wes, frankly) is getting tiresome. Are these guaranteed sellers so that's why they keep coming? Personally I'd appreciate some more from the less well-known greats, instead of more and more from The Greats. -
I don't know if its still the case, but it hadn't been issued when a kind board member sent me all of these PJ 45s many years ago - Billy singing, and the Harold Land/Teddy Edwards combo too.
-
By the way that Jackie Davis was (I strongly believe) a 45-only release with Harold Land. Unless there was an alternate used for this LP? The French get the better covers:
-
I am now very curious to hear this alternate. And I really wonder about unissued takes on all of these comps, like the Bumble Bee Slim track? New Amy there? Or the Groove Holmes with Ammons?
-
Everybody is great on this, and of course it is extra special to me for Gene Harris' presence.
