COVID-19 III: No Politics For Thee
Dan Gould replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Reminds me of the million dollar idea I once had: License sports team insignias for urinal cakes. Imagine if Red Sox fans could piss on the Yankee logo. Seminoles pissing on Gators. It works everywhere, for every team sport. Million dollar idea, easy. Might even increase consumption of beverages. All it would have taken is an acceptance of your team getting pissed on in exchange for the knowledge that your opponent gets it too. Fair trade. Also, now that I think of it, the imprint would have to be urine-proof for maximum enjoyment. And speaking of the trough system in use at many older stadiums (FSU had them when I attended, and Fenway too at least before they spent the money on renovations): You can only have so many urinal cakes in there, leading to the inevitable cross-streams and drunken competition. -

Keep your mask on in the loo, folks: https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2020/06/16/coronavirus-toilet-flushing/ Also, ewwww. -
I see nothing in the Snopes piece that negates his findings. and it in fact ends with the notation that it WAS published in a peer-reviewed journal in 2018 so that's pretty amusing. And working papers are still studies! You should have stopped at "not that this ought to matter either" From what I can see the black economist is the youngest tenured professor at Harvard. Bet he gets cancelled now.

https://www.nber.org/papers/w27324.pdf Abstract: This paper provides the first empirical examination of the impact of federal and state "Pattern-or Practice" investigations on crime and policing. For investigations that were not preceded by "viral" incidents of deadly force, investigations, on average, led to a statistically significant reduction in homicides and total crime. In stark contrast, all investigations that were preceded by "viral" incidents of deadly force have led to a large and statistically significant increase in homicides and total crime. We estimate that these investigations caused almost 900 excess homicides and almost 34,000 excess felonies. The leading hypothesis for why these investigations increase homicides and total crime is an abrupt change in the quantity of policing activity. In Chicago, the number of police-civilian interactions decreased by almost 90% in the month after the investigation was announced. In Riverside CA, interactions decreased 54%. In St. Louis, self-initiated police activities declined by 46%. Other theories we test such as changes in community trust or the aggressiveness of consent decrees associated with investigations -- all contradict the data in important ways. More here: https://www.thecollegefix.com/harvard-professors-research-defunding-the-police-could-cost-thousands-of-black-lives/ (BTW his empirical study of officer-involved shootings a few years ago found that whites were more likely to be shot, but African-Americans were more likely to be subject to non-lethal force.) And, it ought not to matter but the Harvard prof is black. I bring that up because last week some lefty journalist simply retweeted the results of someone else's study which verified that in 1968, peaceful protest increased democrat vote share, and violent protest decreased it. The result? He was found to be a racist and summarily fired. But that's really a whole nother post as "cancel" culture has gotten a hold of this situation and taken many, many scalps to date.

Why would it be crazy to budget overtime for police? Policing is 24/7 (at least it is now, what it will be after defunding, who knows) but major events from riots to terrorism to presidential visits can't be predicted. Compensation and work conditions is regulated by union negotiated contracts and have to be followed. Of course cities have to budget some amount for overtime because the only thing that isn't predictable is exactly how much will get used, not that it will happen.

I'll just guess that in the looser limits of this particular thread, that TPM is just fine? Then how about nuking the post above for gross abuse of fair use of copyrighted material???

https://www.jazzmessengers.com/en/83011/art-blakey/and-the-new-jazz-men-live-in-paris-65?mc_cid=34480c1333&mc_eid=65354821cd AUDIOPHILE GRADING 180 GRAM LP Limited to 2,000 copies. A never-before released Art Blakey 1965 live recordings. First official release with the full permission and cooperation of the Art Blakey Estate & INA (Institut National de l’Audiovisuel). Available on vinyl only. No CD, No Digital is scheduled. A truly powerhouse quintet! Art Blakey, Live in ’65 boasts an exceptional one-hour concert from Paris in 1965. This performance showcases one of the few undocumented Blakey bands, the New Jazzmen, featuring Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Jaki Byard on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, Nathan Davis on sax, and, of course, Blakey on drums. Freddie Hubbard’s incendiary playing on “Blue Moon” and the blistering 24-minute version of his own “Crisis” shows that he was one of the most innovative trumpeters in jazz history. On this live session, the audiences seem to have been enthusiastic and appreciative. “Everywhere we’d go people would say, This is the best Jazz Messengers we’ve heard!”, according to Davis. “And because of the way Jaki would play and Reggie would go, it was like a semi-freedom thing – with Messengers heads, you know, but when we got to soloing…! And Blakey was ridin’ and floatin’ the time…but he would always be loose enough to follow, to keep it going. He’s one helluva musician.” Recorded at Palais de la Mutualité, Paris, France, November 3, 1965. PERSONNEL: Freddie Hubbard (Trumpet) Nathan Davis (Tenor saxophone) Jacki Byard (Piano) Reggie Workman (Bass) Art Blakey (Drums) TRACKS: Side A A1. The Hub (Freddie Hubbard) 16’44 A2. Blue Moon (Rogers/Hart) 7’44 Side B B1. Crisis (Freddie Hubbard) 24’46 Re-mastered from the original Master Tapes.

I'm sorry but you need to be more specific about the reasons for its placement in this pantheon of wretchedness. In fact I'd love to hear a list of the worst CDs you are aware of ...

I am torn, as I would like my mother to be able to see her Cubs again and since she is turning 86 in a month one is very aware that she may not have many seasons left. OTOH, the Red Sox are guaranteed to suck, bigly, and a lost season means another year without a Yankee championship which they were clearly primed for. So I have an interest in not only a completely missed season but maybe another work stoppage next year (doesn't the current agreement expire before 2021?) just means their expensive pitchers like that Astros mercenary will be another year older. Nobody stops Father Time from doing his thing.

Thanks for this, I would not have had Bobby Timmons on my bingo card for "pianists Monk apparently really dug".

Books on Cassette - Percy France

Decided to join audiobooks.com for their "one free" trial subscription, and downloaded My Gun is Quick. Way more Percy on this one, playing out while Stacy Keach speaks, and with the same little interludes spruced thru out. Very cool. -

Cool Story: They Found A Roman City
Dan Gould replied to Matthew's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Very cool but leaves me wondering: Is this truly an exhaustive means of doing archaeology? How did Italy come to know that this was the location of the city and protect it by law? It takes such an incredible amount of time for excavation so not waiting for it to be revealed is, of course, very impressive. I still prefer to ultimately see the structures. I think there would be a lot more to learn if they were allowed to dig. -
Looks mostly like a prime source for BFT material.

Funny, I have a strong recollection of being in a convenience store with about 4 of my hotter classmates, in their cheerleader outfits, natch. One started singing that song and seemingly glancing over at me. She was not singing about me.

Well The Killing Man is the only one so far confirmed by the credits at the end. I've got that one coming via Amazon for like $7. -

Well just returned to this question and listened to the outro/credits on this one "... original music was composed and performed by Percy France" So far none of the other titles on youtube seem to have full credits at the end but I'm glad I listened to the end of this one at least ... -
Jazz For A Sunday Afternoon Vol. 2: The Guitars

Excellent sleuthing. Contemporaneous reporting is a lot more reliable. -
too fast or too slow transfers are a common problem on Dime and I am sure other private recording trade/BT sites. It can't be too hard to correct since pitch-corrected recordings get posted all the time. Goldwave has "time warp" as an effect which allows you to convert a recording from 45 or 33 to 78, I just have no idea what it would take to convert "a half-step" down. Edit to add: A pitch-corrected transfer was posted here https://brewlitesjazztales.wordpress.com/2011/11/23/dizzy-gillespie-johnny-richards-the-lost-jerome-kern-memorial-album-hollywood-1946/ back in 2011 but the link is dead. The blog doesn't seem too active anymore with nothing posted since February but that isn't really too long ago so maybe he will re-up.

This very-late concert is extraordinary https://www.amazon.com/During-This-Time-Oscar-Peterson/dp/B00GOKSCP0/ref=sr_1_12?dchild=1&keywords=ben+webster+during+this+time&qid=1591531443&s=movies-tv&sr=1-12-catcorr Every serious Ben fan should have this. Just watched with Mom even she was captivated.

Yeah, no, not a Tyrone fan. I just grabbed it because I figured it was obscure and possibly even quite rare and I figured there were friends on the board who'd be interested to hear it.
