  1. CJ, it is simply not true that the full session heard by a relative lucky few was 'several generations removed from the master'. This implies a degradation of the sound that is simply entirely lacking. More accurately, the entire session was spirited out by an insider (I am pretty sure on cassette) but once transferred to digital went out into the world of folks sworn to secrecy and subsequent copies stayed in the digital realm. Thus, I have no current desire to buy the CD because I don't think their master is likely to be blow-away better than mine. (The fact that BN can issue it now is a tribute to the fact that so many people heard it but it didn't ever make it out via a bit-torrent site.) Secondly it is not inexplicable that this recording was shelved. The fact that most of the set was re-recorded in a live setting is entirely indicative that Alfred didn't think the recording jelled all that well. So IMO your description of the music is fine (I do think you miss the fact that Lee is the star of the released takes, and Hank wasn't really all that great here) but your background on the recording, and the fact of its unofficial release is inaccurate in terms of fidelity and skips over an important part of the story - not only why it was not released and actually re-recorded live, but the ensuing debate among those in-the-know. I realize you never had access to the full session but that didn't stop you from describing that version as 'several generations removed'. Just my 2 cents.
  2. It's not like I am in the loop for Wilton CT news but I did grow up there and the family home was only sold about three years ago - had no idea about this. I don't know what the library would do with it. Is the archive all music or his papers or what? Doesn't really make any sense in a small town library.
  3. I am pretty sure Decluttr has a few under their banner. They must have a coding error in their system to send out the same wrong CD and must not train anyone to cross-check the order and the item.
  4. Was it the same seller? Because I can't fathom two different people shipping the exact same wrong CD on the same order.
  5. Not to mention anecdotal reports of second infections being worse than the first go round - regarding the possibility or even likelihood that you don't get any long-lasting immunity from an infection.
  6. Just listened and edited for CDR transfer: Jimmy McGriff, The Groover and Here's Brother Sterling, sole leader date by the horn on the McGriff LP. Arnold Sterling was a helluva saxophonist, IMHO.
  7. Well we've found a new locale where items can go in the wrong direction - Memphis. 8 days after leaving Memphis (when it seemed on target for on-time delivery) it was scanned in Phoenix. Frankly I'm relieved that it got someplace to be scanned even if its 2000 miles in the wrong direction. Now I am wondering - when an item is misdirected and ridiculously late, is anything done to expedite delivery, as in treating it like a first class package? Or I bet it is a media mail piece in Phoenix, hopefully sent in the general direction of Florida, and probably 9 days away.
  8. Under what assumptions about the fatality rate?
  9. Partial credit where it's due: I got an LP from a UK seller, the listing had a crazy price for priority shipping but despite the cost on the invoice being correct, Paypal only charged about $5 for shipping and the seller was satisfied with it so I resigned myself to a 30+ day wait and the knowledge that it might go missing anyway with no tracking info. But then I got actually got tracking info, and its now taken just six days to get from the UK to Concord NH via Pitney Bowes. Of course at some point I think it will get turned over to the USPS and god knows what they will do with it but that is a concern for another thread.
  10. I thought that everyone knew that Minnesota Nice turns into Canadian Super Nice once you go over the border.
  11. I will have to pull this one out soon. I recall my reaction as in line with Yanow's - that the band was good but Sweets a bit of a weak link. I always enjoy Peagler though. Anyway not his last. There was Swing Summit on Candid and Live at the Iridium after that.
  12. In the end I received this on Wednesday, a day early but two days after it reached the PO. And now I am more aggravated as the recent order that is of most importance to me is a full week out of Memphis without being scanned anywhere. That's ridiculous.
  13. I've only seen the cover of this so had no idea Coleman Hawkins provided tenor solos. Wish my brother was around to be able to tell him that - the only noteworthy Miami of Ohio alum he ever mentioned was Tina Louise.
  14. I was going to mention Counce leading a nearly all-black band in 1956.
  15. There's no evidence to suggest he is the source of any outbreak from that location. Don't care what else he said. And have no interest in anything else you ever say.
  16. I trust this is not posted in a spirit of "just rewards". https://www.cleveland19.com/2020/07/10/year-old-port-clinton-war-vet-dies-covid-complications-fourth-july/ “Rick is getting slaughtered online right now for his decision that he made not to wear a mask and that’s not right,” Conley said. “We should still be compassionate whether we agree with someone’s beliefs or not. Someone has passed away and we should have some compassion towards that.” Rose’s family said he tested positive for COVID-19 on July 1 and died just three days later. Rose’s family said he had no known pre-existing health conditions. That is an incredible trajectory, to be diagnosed on the 1st and dead on the 4th. Edit to add it looks like it may have been a packed pool/bar location that he was infected. Hard to imagine anyone wearing a mask at a location like that and this is more on young people believing they are indestructible. https://heavy.com/news/2020/07/richard-rose-covid-19-coronavirus/
  17. tommysjazz@gmail.com He was friends with the guy who ran the label and remains friends with the son who may or may not issue more. Can't say what his fill rate would be but if anyone can find copies its Tom.
  18. It's 8 days now since this package was scanned in the Netherlands and no indication of movement. On an International Priority package. I am only comforted by the fact that this was the largest recent purchase and that was before the highway-robbery shipping charge, so when I give up and ask for a refund I'll get a decent chunk of change back. And it reminds me of the "shipping delay" I hadn't mentioned - June 1, shipped from the UK. July 11, nothing at all. When I initiated the eBay dispute the seller begged me to wait until it was 6 weeks since shipping. We ultimately compromised on 5 weeks before he issued the refund but we're a week past that now. And even that wasn't without difficulty, as I had bought four items from this seller, and initiated the dispute on the first item listed on the single order. When he finally issued the refund he made it a partial refund for that item, as if it wasn't the entire package that was MIA. That was pretty infuriating.
  19. Made me curious so I found his first Grits label release on youtube. Nice and now more curious about this one.
  20. Probably 12 or 14 years ago I came across a super cheap "complete" DVD box of this show at a Sam's Club. Hadn't cracked it open until now, it holds up pretty well as entertainment, and just as I recall, got funnier when Tony Schalhoub joined the cast as Antonio. I remember the NYT did a write-up at the end of the show's run which surprised me, but they described it pretty well, basically as "not everything is at Cheers' level but this was an enjoyable 30 minutes for 8 seasons, so ..." BTW no one noticed David Schramm's passing a few months back. He was a pro's pro and excellent as Roy Biggins.
  21. For all the great Mobley pieces, you should bookmark this: https://jazzprofiles.blogspot.com/2020/01/hank-mobley-links-to-jazzprofiles-blog.html (I'm surprised no one mentioned it after last weekend's Mosaic Gazette went out.)
  22. I now notice it says 3000 copies and doesn't list a time frame. So have they sold enough to make this a true Last Chance (as in, any decent order gets them to 3000 or too close to justify another "final" order) or are they getting out while the getting is good? I'm wondering if they have extras of the booklet or if that is a thing of the past. I have all of the music and I cancelled my pre-order due to financial difficulties and those have not let up. But I wouldn't mind having the booklet.
  23. He also seems to have invented a new, DG-level phrase - "Tubey Magic" (always capitalized).
  24. Alas, no Super Hot Stamper copies available at $149 - but I am sure the search continues. https://www.better-records.com/search_adv.aspx?sp=eagles&option=s_name&min_price=1&max_price=&manuf=&cate=&so=14
