  1. Thanks Peter. Hopefully more recco's to come but I can always pull my own. I did like the involuntary nature of the listening though ...
  2. With Sweets? I'm on this now. Thanks Chuck.
  3. I have no idea if he'll be a good fit or not. I was more excited at hearing that Jason Varitek was supposed to be in the running. Their issues wasn't the manager. It was failing to replace Ortiz' bat (Encarnarcion was such an obvious fit I couldn't believe they didn't go after him); terrible luck trading for power middle relievers (Thornburgh from Milwaukee and Carson Smith both instant season-ending injuries after trade); closer who throws consistent strikes about half the time. Also David Price not being in the rotation at the end of the year. None of those in the control of the former manager. Whoever gets hired needs a better bullpen and a lot more health.
  4. Just listened to both, very nice ... was anyone aware that Oliphant is still performing? He's 88 now and led a band at Dizzy's just last month: http://www.jazz.org/dizzys/events/184538/grassella-oliphant/ (actually according to that link he took 40 years off and returned in 2010. Anyway - while I continue to enjoy the other Atlantic treasures, let's open up the floor for Monday and let's make the theme "Small Group Swing".
  5. YMMV but this is the last Amy I reach for. Haven't heard the Jungle LP though so maybe that would be dead last.
  6. I strongly recall hearing of a Perri Lee recording with a favorite tenor - I was totally 100% sure that you had told me of this, MG, especially since as you recall I was the source of the Night at Count Basie's LP. And after some googling, I am virtually certain this is the one you told me about: https://www.discogs.com/Perry-Lee-Blackwell-Presenting-Perry-Lee-Blackwell/release/7112665
  7. Selling does not imply disposal.
  8. Methinks its time to close the floor once again - with a hat tip to everyone. Gonna add the Mitchell-Land to Friday; Gotta save The Congregation and that Vito Price for another day.
  9. Well I think the other part of it is being in the 'mad collector' stage for so long - it means the collection is deep, but many treasures have been buried and forgotten. The good people of the board are like pigs pointing out truffles for me, and I'm happily chowing down. Plenty Plenty Soul is in Friday's stack.
  10. Yeah this isn't the first or 20th Hank I'd pull out but that's kind of the point - going deep into the collection. I never thought listening to what I am told to listen to would be so enjoyable.
  11. Oh hell yeah. I have the And Then Again/Midnight Walk collectables two-fer and also pulled Philly Joe and Elvin Together
  12. Seems like a good place to ask for other Nilva recommendations (I have the Charles Davis which is very fine and a Junior Mance/Martin Rivera duo recording and the Big John Patton Jim mentioned).
  13. Still hoping to find that other Perri Lee, with Curtis Amy, wasn't it?
  14. Oh yeah, saw the Oliphant when looking up the Owens and thought, maybe someone will mention these too. One good thing with the Atlantic reissues they tended to be exact replicas so if all of these are 45 minutes, give or take, there'll be time for more discs tomorrow.
  15. I think I decided there was too much New Thing, not enough Blue Thing. Which makes me think of this: "Too much bondage, not enough discipline!"
  16. That's #2; thanks its definitely been a while.
  17. Yeah somebody say "Coltrane Plays the Blues" - haven't heard that in freaking forever. And if not T-Bone, Freddie King!
  18. I fear that Atlantic will reveal the "holes" in the collection, since I'll say up front, no Mingus, no RRK, no Eddie Harris to be found. But since we're only talking about 7-8 hours of listening time I'm sure the requisite number of Atlantics can be found. The floor is open for Friday.
  19. Resonance seems to be back at it with Wes, this time for Black Friday at ye olde neighborhood record store: http://recordstoreday.com/SpecialRelease/9779
  20. And with that, the floor is closed until Friday. Thanks to all, for once I am looking forward to work tomorrow.
  21. Well how do I handle this? Manhattan After Hours to hear Barlow, or Manhattan Afternoon to stick with Criss Cross (really thought I had Bluesville Time to begin with)? Perhaps both. Hmm let's consider that for Friday listening. I'm assuming this was for my other thread? Ah yes, with Kenny Drew. A definite favorite, and too long since I've listened. Thanks John!
  22. The Turney I've heard recently, the Harry Allen I don't have.
  23. That's probably the all-time favorite of the quartet on Concord.
  24. Oh no, three strikes and you're out! I can dig up a John Swana Philly Gumbo and Philly NY Junction; and how's about Zoot and Al, Motoring Along on Sonet? Not one of the labels but that's the first of their collaborations I came across. Thanks Bill.
