  1. It is indeed. Now I am regretting that I didn't use his performance of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" from the same recording. No bebop runs there.
  2. Thanks again Tom, this BFT had a lot of enjoyable tracks for me. I have the first Philly Gumbo disc, never got the second but I should definitely correct that soon.
  3. Although only Thom received discs, his naming convention followed the arbitrary division of tracks so I figured I should split up the Discussion threads. This one is for Tracks 11-21. Let the games begin - and I should mention that in this group I brought back the old Gene Harris/Not Gene Harris section. I think it's start is announced pretty clearly.

  5. Allright, now we got a party. Anyone else before I send out links late tomorrow?
  6. Any thoughts from other Record Day participants to my plan to actually visiting the two record stores in the area the weekend before? I have no interest in the items that go on sale on the big day and don't want to fight crowds of middle-aged and older men, and at the same time I suspect that the stores would be loading up available stock in the racks in advance, so it's kind of an antique-show "early buying" opportunity. Of course they may not load up until the latter half of the week before but still ... easy parking and less of a wait for the listening stations sounds like a win-win to me.
  7. I do find it strange though that these bots are identified. They can't do it entirely in the background, NSA style?
  8. Just noticed this - Bing, Yahoo and Google are members?
  9. Well with net neutrality coming, how long before they do take it over? Thanks to everyone who have joined up so far and I hope we get more. And Jeff, it's all in jest but at the same time, if anyone recognizes the obscurities, my money is on you.
  10. Oh, I once had a problem with a Media Mail shipment and called their CSR center and was told exactly that. They do EVERYTHING else before looking at Media Mail, and if they run out time, tough noogies, tomorrow they start up with all the new stuff that came in, and maybe they'll move your Media Mail item if they get to it then, but if they don't, back to tough noogies. Kinda the exact opposite of Amazon 2-day. But again, I paid for Priority (never used Media with Dusty Groove, actually). And when the USPS got their act in gear, they delivered.
  11. I did, condition as described, so replacements didn't magically walk in during the 11 days between shipment and processing by the USPS. The box, fwiw, was not nearly as pristine as DG boxes normally are - and I've gotten more than a few lately. Multiple dark marks. And I thought a bit about your thought about DG possibly missing a box. I have a hard time picturing it, because it seems to me an operation like theirs should be very well organized - order pulled, packaging material, printer/pc set up, and lots and lots of USPS cartons to put the sealed packages into for pick up. And for a company like theirs, wouldn't they have a postman coming by for pickups? They must ship a dozen or multiple dozens a day and would have them ready to go in those plastic trays.
  12. I'm going to make a final comment: 1. Mr. Dolan seems to get his jollies from "spanking" people on internet discussion boards. How pathetically sad, not to mention pathological. 2. He's actually had spats with Lon. Lon! One of the best people I've ever known on the inter-webs. Think about those two facts, then think about what Mr. Dolan brings to this discussion, and any discussion on this board.
  13. BECAUSE I ASKED DUSTY GROOVE AND THEY TOLD ME THAT IT WAS HANDED TO THE USPS ON THE 11TH.
  14. Most likely a function of poor bookkeeping. Happens with a lot of companies out there. They'll think they have something in stock, but actually don't. I don't know. Their (Dusty Groove) site seems pretty accurate when indicating that something is not in stock. So do most places I've dealt with. Or so it appears on the surface. One sales not entered into the database can change everything. I've seen cases of it with brick and mortars where their websites shows it's in stock, but it actually isn't. Thing is, with you and Dan both having similar experiences from a common vendor raises a red flag. Except that, if you knew Dusty Groove, you'd know that they confirm physical possession of the items before shipping. That is the option I chose, it is the one they followed. These were used LPs - there is no 'restocking' of singular items. Do you think they charged my card, lied about giving it to the USPS, all in the hopes that these two LPs would walk in the store again so they could pack the items 11 days later and actually let the USPS have it? Occam's razor says that they had the items on March 11 when they sent the shipping confirmation. The lack of scanning doesn't prove shit. I had another order show as being received in CA, never departing, until it magically arrived at my Post Office two weeks afterwards.
  15. Then Dusty Groove lied to me when they said the package was picked up on the 11th. I believe Dusty Groove, the USPS, then you, in that order.
  16. I know it can't just be me ... lately I've had the experience of items that don't get scanned until they suddenly show up, but this latest takes the cake. Order placed, Priority Mail, with Da Bastards Tuesday March 10th. Shipping confirmation received Wednesday March 11. See the attachment for how the USPS handled it since then. Yes, 11 days for it to be scanned at the main sort center in Chicago! And 13 days to arrive, and they have the temerity to call it "On-Time"!! Any other horror stories?
  17. Well many of you know what to expect on one of my BFTs. Some blues. Some Gene Harris. Some flag-wavers. Some bluesy Gene Harris flag-wavers. And obscurities. Oh such obscurities this time around. Obscurities so obscure it will take Jeff 30 seconds or so to recognize them. The rest of you on your own. D/Ls courtesy of Thom Keith's server, discs to be manufactured on demand and entrusted to the frightfully incompetent USPS. Edit to add: 21 tracks, about 120 minutes. A number of tracks are quite short but there are an almost equal number that top 10 minutes, so ...
  18. Apologies to Tom for the delay in listening and posting. You promised a straightahead BFT and you delivered. Almost every track was good to excellent and I am definitely looking forward to the reveal. Wish I had more guesses to share but I'm usually pretty skimpy in that regard. 1. Pleasant guitarist but in the end his playing wasn't totally involving to me. 2. This one I dig a lot and feel like I should know the title but it won't come to me. I often realize how much I enjoy older styles only thru BFTs, I never follow up on the pleasure recordings like this give me. 3. St Thomas, of course, nice but there is something about the sound that is hindering my enjoyment. 4. Sonnymoon for Two, which also get's a "d'uh" response but I treasure the chance to ID tunes since I do it so infrequently. 5. OK, this is Fathead on tenor, and part of the reason I am sure is that, being next up for BFTs, I was listening to a couple of his albums recently. 6. More bluesy goodness but no guesses this time. 6/6 on tunes, I think this is the longest a BFT has gone without aggravating me. 7. And ... well, no aggravation, just noticeably less enjoyment for me on this one. Didn't hate it, just OK. 8. Once again working on tracking for an upcoming BFT helps me. I was listening to Frank Foster/Frank Wess Frankly Speaking and while I don't find this track on there, it sure sounds like those two old pros. Best track yet, Tom! 9. Could this be Ralph Moore on tenor? The piano solo sounds like Cedar Walton, and I thought I had all of Cedar's work with Ralph. Didn't Vincent Herring play tenor when he started gigging/recording with Cedar? 10. This is another one where the sound is hindering my enjoyment. 11. This has me in mind of the output on Criss Cross / Steeplechase / Sharp Nine - younger guys playing in a style older than they are. I'm not complaining, I've bought plenty of those releases over the years. Thanks again Tom this was a very, very enjoyable listen for me. I'm glad I signed up and look forward to the end of the month to finding out who is playing on what.
  19. Well I just let the audio software read off the times and compared them to the CD tray card. Every track, in order, is spot-on or within at most 2 seconds. So I can only conclude that the software actually does say "close enough" and decides this must be that.
  20. I've had this happen many times with LPs I've CD-rd on a stand alone machine. When I transfer to the PC the record is often identified. I think the programme that tries to identify tracks can work things out by the number of tracks and the track length. Very few records can be exactly the same. Perhaps but I just slipped into the disc drive Greg Hatza's CD In My Pocket from 1995 - pre-tags, I do believe - and VLC Media player identified it as something called Float Away With the Friday Night Gods. I guess the ten tracks match perfectly, but this ain't that.
