  1. I'd say the only excuse would be leaving this mortal coil. I'd ask Parker for his address and send a registered letter, since he doesn't respond to PMs.
  2. I could not believe it when the Dodgers ran themselves into two outs at the plate, and of course it has to be the critical play in a 1-run loss. What the hell is wrong with Kent that he couldn't score from second on a double off the RF wall???? How can you misjudge it? Doug Freaking Mirabelli scores standing up on that play. Papi makes it to the dugout before the throw reaches the plate. Sending the runner afterwards was dumb, but I don't think the third base coach even saw him.
  3. That's probably because those bands are what programmers consider "classic rock" in addition to the Stones, Who, Led Zep, etc. Please tell me, aside from Hendrix, what black artists are missing from "classic rock" programming, because I thought that between Hendrix and Living Colour, there weren't any black artists involved in rock. That's valid up to a point if you want to narrowly define it. However look at the Rock N Roll hall of fame and the Black representation there. Admittedly there's more R n B,Soul etc there but they are there. It's just unfortunate that oldies radio isn't that inclusive but like you said a lot of that is on the doorstep of big corporate radio. Here's the thing: "Classic Rock" was never defined as the "roots" of rock n roll, where you do find all of the great black artists, but as rock's "glory days" of the 60s and 70s, distinct from rock's "early days" which was once covered by "oldies" formats, and is virtually exclusively white, outside of Hendrix.
  4. One big problem with the application of that story to this situation: The dumb ass 'bored' pilots asked for and received clearance to deviate from their assigned flight level:
  5. Flight data and cockpit recorders were taken from the executive jet. Its still unclear what was recovered from the tail of the 737. I'd like to see clear evidence if they are charged. I don't think any professional pilot is foolish enough to turn off collision avoidance equipment, nor do they just decide to ignore the clearance they've received and choose to fly at a different altitude just cause they want to.
  6. I never understood the super hard-ass approach to managing. It never seems to work for very long, even when you find success.
  7. chewy had his phone number at one time ...
  8. Unlikely? I don't get it. It's more than likely. And this time it will be competitive, as opposed to that dreary 2000 series. Likely? Not nearly as likely as it seemed at mid-summer. The Mets have a deep lineup and a closer. Everything else is a question mark and they've been playing like crap for several weeks. NL champion will come out of the West. They have excellent middle relief, and just finished the season with a sweep of the Nationals. Wright finished with a 12 game hitting streak. They're ready. And now El Duque is toast. A Met season that was so promising may be hurtling off a cliff. Actually, Maine has pitched pretty well the past two months. His ERA is a full point lower than El Duque's for the season. In a strange way El Duque's injury could actually help the Mets. Maine was impressive in his last 3 starts(all wins) against the Phils. Yeah, I know Maine has pitched pretty well. The fact that he was going to be left off the roster before Pedro's injury doesn't say much about Randolph's managerial skills. Certainly Maine is a better choice than Trachsel. I still say that with two big injuries and Glavine pitching like he's 40 lately, the Mets are probably done unless they swing the bats.

  10. Is it too much to hope that all the visiting teams win today?
  11. Yeah, but what they've got right now is having their passports seized to prevent them from leaving the country before investigators say they can. Isn't that normal for an investigation into an accident causing 150 deaths? You don't simply let the pilots involved leave the country. Although it doesn't look like they are responsible for causing the crash, it cannot be excluded until the investigation has reached a more advanced point. I don't think US authorities would let them go either (if the situation was reversed). Claude, I've never heard of such a thing. But then again, in these circumstances, you don't often have living beings to hold pending an investigation. According to the NYT article, under Brazilian law, prosecutors are responsible for investigating accidental deaths as well as crimes. That's not the case in the US, and the NTSB would have no authority to seize passports once it was clear that no crime took place. So no, I don't think US authorities would hold them.
  12. As the play-offs get started, here's something for everyone whose team isn't playing anymore. While it deals specifically with the demise of a Red Sox season, it surely has a lot of universal appeal.
  13. Of course. The start times are already set: around 8:25 PM ET for every game.
  14. Yeah, but what they've got right now is having their passports seized to prevent them from leaving the country before investigators say they can.
  15. Is that where it belongs? I think not, it's bigger than politics. But if someone wants to move it I don't care as long as it starts a discussion. if you want to bring the "Katrina 'reaction'" into it, its obviously political. You don't have to wait for someone to move it (with the east coast tour kicking off tomorrow, I doubt Jim is paying much attention). All you need do is copy your initial post and paste it into a new thread in the proper forum. Then delete this thread.
  16. According to the first results of the enquiry, both planes flew on the same altitude because of an air traffic control error. And each flying at 500 MPH in opposite directions, there wasn't a lot of time to react. What I wonder is why ATC never picked up on the error. How long were they both flying at 37,000 feet?
  17. Please have at it in the Political forum where it belongs.
  18. Actually, Lazaro started it: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...&hl=charles Here's an interesting article about it in today's NYT: I don't have a problem with the current Basie band being joined to prime-era Ray, though I would have hoped that the Rae-lettes wouldn't have to be "recreated" by Patti Austin et al. The article sure makes it clear that the Concord PR department amped up the hype to "11".
  19. From the New York Times' Joe Sharkey: The surviving aircraft: Truly amazing that a huge airliner could do this damage to a small jet that was still able to fly and yet the jet fell out of the sky. How could the small jet look like this but the big jet became unflyable?
  20. Unlikely? I don't get it. It's more than likely. And this time it will be competitive, as opposed to that dreary 2000 series. Likely? Not nearly as likely as it seemed at mid-summer. 21. at minimum, he should have been treated the way the ice hockey thug who swung his stick at the head of his opponent was treated: Book him for felony assault.
  22. How do you make a hormone? Tell her you won't pay her. Allow me:
  23. When my wife and I went to Boston for a couple of days a year ago in June, Jack's was the one place we made it to other than the Fine Arts Museum and Fenway Park and it was well worth it.
