Follow up on the Bradley story, from MLB.com: And this is the guy who thinks he's the "leader" of the team? What a maroon.

Further update: Landfall actually occured further south than anticipated, between Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood. Still we've had some very strong winds and heavy rain, yet the power and satelite TV has held on. Don't know how long that will last though as the up-to-the-minute radar shows another strong line of storms just starting to come on shore near Boca/Delray. If I post again tonite, then we made it through that one, too. Edit: Just realized that Evan is keeping the images at the start of the thread up to date, and you can see exactly where the eye made landfall.

The version I have has perfectly acceptable mono sound, and its my opinion that everything this band recorded is worth hearing.

Trouble ahead for Lance Armstrong
Dan Gould replied to brownie's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
If this is SOP, then why is the lab even making such a statement? If this is how its done, the lab needn't say anything. This looks like an ass-covering statement which ought to not be at all necessary, unless something isn't right with the reporting of those who have had it in for Armstrong for seven long years. -
And continue to be an insufferable ass.

But wasn't it the lab that was the source for the connection in the original reporting? -

What? Now THE LAB is denying a link to Armstrong? Looks to me like Brownie and a few other people owe him an apology. -
Back to the purpose of the thread: Its still just a strong tropical storm, but now I am hearing that landfall is predicted for the Broward County/Palm Beach County line, which puts me and Marty very much in the area that will get the "worst" of this storm, whatever that may be. Glad we bought a generator back in June, I just hope we've got enough gas.

Poll: Yankees Atop the Wild Card
Dan Gould replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
HUH? His "handlers" told him to make a right turn in the batter's box on the tapper back to the mound in Tampa Bay? His "handlers" told him to go take a leak inside the monster but barely get out in time for the next pitch? -
True, but is there a team in the AL that wants to face a lineup like that?

Heading into this critical final month, I have to say that I was struck by the season batting averages of last night's Red Sox lineup, which figures to be the every day lineup the rest of the way: Boston AVG Damon .331 Renteria .287 Ortiz .297 Ramirez .283 Nixon .293 Varitek .301 Olerud .308 Mueller .298 Graffanino .306 With the two black holes, Bellhorn (released) and Millar (replaced by Olerud) gone, what team wants to face this lineup in October? For pete's sake, the lowest average is Manny's, and with the way he's hitting homers and driving in runs, who wants to face him? If I'm not mistaken, the White Sox don't have a single regular hitting above .300. The Sox have seven who are .293 or higher! Only pitching can keep this team from repeating, and its up to Schilling to get himself situated at the top of the rotation and Foulke to be Foulke. Otherwise, we need to have the courage to let rookies like Papelbon and Craig Hansen step in and show what they can do. Another title is there for the taking.

Poll: Yankees Atop the Wild Card
Dan Gould replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Schilling doesn't speak for the Red Sox or the fans. His support of Bush was a big embarrassment to all of us. I'll cut him some slack, however, because he did help to win the championship. Whoever said baseball players had any brains, anyway? ← His support of Bush was a big embarassment for some not "all of us". Some of the fans have no problem with his political views. -

Well, I'd like to know who voted for "win the division". I know Dave James and MartyJazz have lost all faith for this year, or has that changed? -
Count me as a Nat fan, Flurin. Wrote some of the best tunes in the band's book and I totally agree with KH1958, that he was a perfect foil for Cannon.

I read it a long time ago, haven't revisited it since. An entertaining read, that's for sure. But I think Ball Four is the all-time classic.

I was never a big collector of baseball cards. I mostly brought them for that hard wafer of gum. It was a character-building exercise to turn that stuff into a wad of gum so I could look like Sparky Lyle (yes, before I became a Sox fan, I liked to watch Sparky Lyle as the closer for the Yanks, before Steinbrenner took over).
-
Well, its been a long strange trip in the Bronx, but with 40 or so games to go, the Yanks lead the Wild Card and are 3.5 games back in the division. So, can they pull it out? I didn't think they were as bad as they looked earlier, but with the continued injuries and the Unit looking every bit his age, I do think that if Wright and Chacon are effective down the stretch, they could very well make the play-offs, where I am sure all New Yorkers will remind us of the current streak of Wild Card winners taking it all.

Judging from the pictures in the family albums, since at least the age of 3.

Yes, Fisk was appalled at Sanders doodling in the dirt but it was his disrespect for the game and how it is supposed to be played that triggered his outburst, which nearly triggered a brawl after Deion's mindless retort. And I would hope that even among Yankee fans, respect for Fisk increased significantly after that incident.

What do y'all think of Milton Bradley and his comments about Jeff Kent? http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2141482 Apparently it started when Kent hit a double with Bradley on first and he failed to score, and Kent questioned his hustle or whatever. Now its "Jeff Kent doesn't know how to deal with African-Americans". What an ass that guy is. Its the same response that Neon Deion gave to Pudge Fisk when he hit a pop-up and didn't run down the baseline and Fisk told him to move his ass and Deon said, "Slavery ended 100 years ago". They're both jackasses. Turn it into race when its really about how you play the game. And then Bradley says that baseball has a race problem because only 9% of the players are black - as if the problem is that baseball sends out the message "black aren't welcome" rather than the reality, which as anyone with a brain knows, is that young blacks have concentrated on basketball every since Michael Jordan. And what was Bradley's comment a day or two ago? "As long as I'm black, I'm OK."? Was there a risk that his race was going to change? Was he going to pull an Eddie Murphy and see how whites treat each other when they're alone? I'll say it again: Milton Bradley is a total ass.

Natasha Lyonne is fighting for her life
Dan Gould replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Obviously I need to get out more. Has she done anything that the public knows her for other than American Pie? ← She was the principal character in Slums of Beverly Hills which, while flawed, is still an entertaining and occasionally very funny movie. -
Trouble ahead for Lance Armstrong
Dan Gould replied to brownie's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
It is of course also Armstrong's self-made image of the dope-free crusader for a clean sport. His little speech against all the cynics and the sceptics at the end of this year's tour somehow lost lots of its impact. He told us to believe in the athletes, that there are no secrets, and that it's all just about hard work. Sure Lance... ← Actually, in this country, Armstrong's self-made image is that of the man who beat cancer and won the Tour. The rest of it means little or nothing. -

The fact is Ray that as Armstrong says, he's never failed a drug test. I think there is much to what couw says about Armstrong not being a part of the "true tradition" and when you also consider the apparent depth of Brownie's hatred (comparing Armstrong to Bush, another "lying Texan" is both silly and telling) it is apparent what motivates the reports as well as the European commentary. -
Clearly, there are factors that support the internet model for retail sales of jazz records. Thank heaven. The bigger question, IMO, is how reduced inventory at brick and mortar stores may effect overall jazz sales for the major labels. The reduced amount of stock for browsing can only hurt the development of new fans (for instance, liking the Miles Blackhawk recordings but not finding any Wynton Kelly trio releases or only one Hank Mobley CD). I know that when I discovered the music in the late 80s, making connections from one reissue to others was critical, and it was all predicated on stores with large jazz stock. What is likely to happen in my opinion is a self-fulfilling prophecy: Only Miles, Coltrane, Ella, Louis, Getz and assorted compilations sell, and before you know it, the limited space available consists of Miles, Coltrane, Ella, Louis, Getz, and the biggest selling compilation of all-time, Jazz for a Rainy Day When the Boss Says "Condense the Jazz Department into 2 Linear Feet".
