  1. All the songs are late night blues played with tremendous feeling and soul. Here's the best way to experience this album: put on headphones and turn off all lights in your listening room. Remove all outside stimuli and let the music take over. You should be transported, thrilled and amazed. Or, on the other hand, if you are like the people who don't "get" this album the way others do, you will fall asleep, and fortunately you will have the lights out already so you can enjoy your nap.
  2. I'd be interested to hear your reaction. Some find this a major snooze. Others think its a classic.
  3. Agreed. Guy ← Are you seriously agreeing that they should be "tried"? I thought you were smarter than that.
  4. Very interesting website here. Basically, it predicts final standings, wild card winners based on the games remaining and a variation on the Bill James "Pythagorean Theorem." Here's the explanation they give: So, on the far right of the standings you see Predicted Wins, Predicted Losses, and percent chance of winning the division, winning the wild card and making the playoffs (division chance + wild card chance). Bottom line, and I have to say this surprises me, but the Yanks trail all American League contenders with just a 36% chance of making the playoffs. The Indians, as of right now, are the favorites for the Wild Card, at a 47% chance. Of course, its just an exercise in statistics, but its still something interesting to keep an eye on in September.
  5. Check the dates and you'll see that I posted this before you did, but in retrospect, you put it in the proper forum. For some reason, I thought "Artists" cuz its about Hank Jones instead of thinking about where the article appeared.
  6. I've been watching wall-to-wall coverage and didn't hear a damn thing about the Convention Center until yesterday. when it came to masses of people in an increasingly untenable situation, ALL the coverage was about the Superdome. As far as getting poor and elderly people out before a storm hits, that's for a locality to figure out BEFORE disaster strikes. New Orleans had no plan in place, despite years and years and years and years and years of advance knowledge. Since the political fire is going far and wide with no end, I think I'll weigh in for the first time since retiring from the Politics Forum: This Blame Bush crap is a joke. 1. Its Bush's fault because there are National Guardsman in Iraq? That bitch might hold water, if the effected states didn't have large numbers of their National Guardsman available to be called up. IRAQ has NOTHING to do with the response to Hurricane Katrina. 2. Its Bush's fault because global warning made the storm such a monstrosity? Get your head out of your ass! This storm was well within the historical parameters of hurricanes, and Kyoto or no Kyoto, would have happened sooner or later. An aside: I had the misfortune of reading Michael Moore's latest letter. In it, he claimed that as the storm passed over south Florida, the weather man was saying, on THURSDAY, that this storm is headed to New Orleans, and therefore, Bush is responsible because nothing was done and they had so much time to prepare. What a complete crock of shit. When that storm crossed the peninsula, it was expected to start turning to the north almost immediately, and the initial target was the panhandle. But that turn kept being pushed back and pushed back and pushed back, and the landfall area kept shifting to the west and shifting to the west. This storm was NOT forecast to hit New Orleans at the time it was pummeling Florida. But its a great thing to claim, because then you can once again Blame Bush. 3. This is how governments function, particularly in the wake of a storm which absolutely DEVASTATES the transportion infrastructure of the area. 4. The simple fact is that the fate of almost all the victims was sealed when the storm hit, transportation systems wrecked and the levee was breached (a result, by the way, that according to today's Times, was never considered as a possibility. The presumption of all prior planning was that water would overflow - not burst through).
  7. Interesting to hear what Hank says. Too bad Ratliff didn't ask him if good taste is always the answer, huh Chuck?
  8. I bought this on cassette long ago and only now I am fixing that by splurging on the JVC XRCD version of this, only $19.99 right now at Red Trumpet. As to the thread topic, no need, IMO, to pick one label over the other. Blue was a very fine trumpet player, and all his albums from this period - Riverside, BN, with the Silver Quintet - have much to recommend them.
  9. this is all the people who have posted have suggested. Take it to the other forum where politics belongs.
  10. You know, I might be concerned about this possibility if it wasn't 8 pm Eastern time on the deadline for post-season rosters, and there isn't a whiff, not a hint of this possibility on ESPN.com.
  11. As compared to spending billions invaiding a country that had nothing to do with slamming airplanes into US buildings? Thus saving bin laden-- a sworn enemy of Saddam-- the trouble of toppling him. ← Thanks for setting that Bush-level rationale straight, medjuck. ← Please go play in another forum. ← Word.
  12. Dave, we've argued the points of "personality" vs shot-making before so I won't go there, but I have to point out that if you are looking for personality, Agassi lost his a while back. Now when was that? Let's see ... oh yes: it was right about the time he became a Grand Slam champion.
  13. All these rumors about martial law being declared: According to the Times, a couple of Parishes requested it, but it is not authorized by the State Constitution.
  14. Thanks for that clarification, now my comment doesn't make me look a wee bit confused.
  15. Yeah, and maybe crop out the pee stain. Then you don't have to change the tee-shirt to Benevolent Bed Wetter.
  16. Well, with no lights, a/c and overflowing toilets, I think its necessary. In fact, they're talking about evacuating all shelters. ← I'm sure they need to--but how, given that there are anywhere from 10-20,000 people inside the Superdome? This from a diary on Kos, saying that martial law's been declared in New Orleans: ← I certainly don't question how extreme the conditions faced in New Orleans are, but the picture painted by MSNBC is certainly quite different from the one this diarist claims:
  17. Chris, I've sent an email to the nyc.rr.com address regarding the potential availability of a 10 1/2 inch reel machine.
  18. Well, with no lights, a/c and overflowing toilets, I think its necessary. In fact, they're talking about evacuating all shelters.
  19. I'm confused ... is this one of those really small type of reels, or one of the larger ones or what? I transferred a lot of live recordings for Marty using his reel-to-reel, I can check whether his could handle those or not.
  20. Can't help but notice the sudden plethora of gig announcements in some major cities and quite a bit aways from Organissimo's home base, and I can't help but wonder, is this traced directly to the new CD or are these things coming up as a result of earlier efforts by Greg and Jim? If its all coming from the strength of the CD, well, woo hoo, and keep on keepin' on!
  21. Oh yeah - any other old concerts you can think of lying around in the closet? Or are those three the cream of the crop?
  22. Very cool. How's the sound quality, Chris? I have some experience dealing with 40 year old reels. In fact, I can handle making those transfers if Danny gets too busy.
  23. Well, I am near to quaking in my boots, but its not over Bellhorn joining the evil empire. Its the state of the bullpen, the fact that Foulke does not look much improved, and now Craig Hansen, the super-draftee, has been shut down with a 'tired arm'. Hopefully this is a short-term thing, like a pitcher's "dead arm" in Spring Training (remember, he wasn't throwing from the end of St. John's season til he signed) but a lot of Red Sox Nation was expecting him to be in a Sox uniform on September 1 and that's not going to happen. I'm hearing rumors about Trachsel being traded by the Mets and that sounds like a great pickup. Put Trachsel in the rotation and Arroyo in the pen. But can a deal be struck with so little time remaining for playoff rosters? But back to Bellhorn. Are they really that down on Cano because of his slump? Bellhorn hit .117 on his rehab, that's a lot worse than Cano has been recently! The only thing I can think of is the possibility that that Bellhorn becomes the late-inning defensive replacement for Cano. And how ironic is that? For those 8 magical games, Bellhorn had a defensive replacement himself, Pokey Reese!
  24. Forgive me, Chuck, but I hadn't developed an appreciation for strings at the time. At least I corrected my oversight eventually!
