So, what do you drink, Tap, bottled, import????
Dan Gould replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Interesting, because in my town, they send out periodic reminders that "in order to maintain the safety of the water, we will now massively increase the chlorine content for the next three weeks." The problem being, my wife is severely allergic to chlorine so when we got this notice, we had to immediately run out and get filters for the showerhead and kitchen, and for the next three weeks, she brushes her teeth in the kitchen. Otherwise I'm doing the dishes for three straight weeks! But as far as consumption goes, the tap works fine for me-she's always drunk the fizzy stuff anyway. -

what is your most sought after OOP recording?
Dan Gould replied to Jazz Groove's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Richard Evans Trio, Home Cookin' on Argo records. No indication in Argo discographies that there's any question as to whether or not it was actually released, and yet, its never shown up anywhere in at least two or three years of searching, while many other "rare" Argo sides have appeared on ebay in the meantime. I do suspect that it does exist-I got in touch with Evans who now teaches at Berklee and he did say that he recalled a photo session outside a Chicago soul food establishment for the cover photography. I'm beginning to think my best hope is that it will show up in Europe around 2010 or so, when European copyright law makes it public domain. -
What Are Your Favorite Baseball Books?
Dan Gould replied to paul secor's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I strongly recommend the book that was the basis of the movie, Eliot Asinof's Eight Men Out. Dan, Did you see the movie. I never read the book but I was wondering how faithful the movie was to the book? Brad, Its been quite a while since I read the book or saw the film, but my best recollection is that it was faithful to its source material (the author was definitely involved in the production-he had a small role in the film, according to the all movie guide website.) -

My two cents: The system has been that mail-out is entirely dependent on the progress of the prior Test. I think the sense of the board has been, "Let's not have discs going hither and yon simultaneously-it's tough enough finding enough time to listen to one, and keep track of the discussion, let alone two." In the meantime, I'm in!

I wonder why you didn't note that my response would be even greater. I mean, how could it not be? Hey Couw, don't sweat it-I'm sure you're BF Disc will be the greatest yet!

What *else* are you passionate about??
Dan Gould replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Are we possibly expanding the circle of what we are "passionate" about here? I mean, "cold weather"? "nice clothes"? I guess to each their own "passions." To update my list, still passionate about my wife, almost two and a half years after the wedding, still waiting for the Sox and Seminoles to reach the promised land; and while I didn't mention them, I should have: Beagle Bailey left us just barely shy of a year ago and I still miss her. Even as we get more passionate about Coltrane (the dog): -
What Are Your Favorite Baseball Books?

Thanks Paul, Dad got it for me for my birthday, and actually my brother unknowingly gave it to me for Christmas, so it was the gift that kept on giving-I exchanged it at Borders for a CD! But yet, its an excellent and moving book. I'll also give a thumbs up to the Kinsella books (Shoeless Joe is better than the movie, IMO). There's also a nice book by a Boston sportswriter called One Pitch Away which tells the story of the 1986 post-season, including the sad story of Donnie Moore who gave up the home to Dave Henderson which led to the Sox coming back from a three to one deficit against the Halos and ultimately killed himself. -
Lane & Broderick to do PRODUCERS movie
Dan Gould replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Apparently it will be more of a musical than the original, which only had two tunes. Considering that even if I were in New York, I could hardly afford to get tickets to see those two, I'll be interested in the movie also, since its the only chance most of us will have. -
OK, but I would think they wouldn't have to drop the price 75% to clear them out. Wouldn't they disappear at 19 euros, too? Man, imagine if Borders ever ran a sale like that!
-
OK, then, what was your point? Were you responding to Berigan's post about the shortcomings of other members of the Hall? And if so, what was the point? If I've tarred you with the brush of favoring Rose's induction and you don't, then I apologize.
-
Um, right here?
-
9 euros instead of 39 euros? Is that a sale or a going out of business blowout?

You're trying to compare alcohol abuse to betting on baseball. There are signs in every clubhouse about betting on baseball. There are no signs about drinking yourself stupid.
-
What you are refusing to recognize is that gambling is a completely different problem when it comes to baseball because of its past destructive force. On top of which, even accepting your supposed equivalence between gambling on baseball and drug or alcohol addiction, Eck and Molitor overcame those problems. There's no indication whatsoever that Rose has. If Rose spent the next 30 years of his life lecturing kids, college players, minor leaguers and major leaguers on why gambling on baseball is not allowed, then, when he is a doddering old man about to join Ted Williams in a vat of Liquid Nitrogen, I still wouldn't let him into the Hall. If they do let him, I hope not a single current member shows up for the ceremony.

Can anyone explain who wrote this tune and why this tune has different names and composers listed? I think its also appeared as John Paul Jones as well as Trane's Blues, and its been listed as both a Coltrane composition and a Miles composition. That's something that's been bothering me for a while, and I'd appreciate if anyone knows the truth behind it.
-
For the few who think that Rose should be forgiven, consider this, from Tom Boswell's Washington Post column:
-
I think a decision was made very early on after the closing that the time had passed and that it had outlived its usefullness. I also think there was a growing realization that active moderation was needed but that budgets wouldn't allow it, so that helped make the decision. And finally, just as people suspected that perhaps an influx of Norah fans finding a lot of distaste for her at the corporate BB, it just might be possible that with their then-pending new signings (Al Green and Van Morrisson) might have led to a realization that there new business model-non-jazz vocalists-might bring even more non-jazz fans to a bulletin board with an established membership of jazz-oriented members. I said that in a very convoluted way, but I think my meaning is clear ...

Horace Silver interview
Dan Gould replied to brownie's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Jim, do you feel that Rickey Woodard is just a "neocon"? Or are you just hoping for someone from the more progressive millieu? Personally, I've dug Rickey's playing for quite a while now, and in fact I just picked up a brand new Marlene Shaw live disc with Rickey and a piano trio. Looking forward to giving it a spin ... -
Horace Silver interview
Dan Gould replied to brownie's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I saw this at a store in Connecticut over the holidays. Unfortunately I neglected to ask the owner about it (and she went to Norwalk High with Horace). I started to lose interest when I saw that Andy Bey provides vocals on a majority of the tracks-I have a hard time getting into Horace's lyrics and Bey is not a favorite anyway. -
Great question, CJ! Especially considering how many Smith imitators Prestige put out in the 60s. Makes you wonder if that's a regret, not recognizing Smith as a major new talent. Thanks a lot, and folks, please keep them coming, I won't be doing the interview before January 17.

Anybody heard "Jam Session, Vol-7" on Steeplechase
Dan Gould replied to jazzkrow's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Go directly to the distributor of Steeplechase CDs (as well as Timeless) Stateside Distributors-Peter Crawford. His e-mail is stateside@prodigy.net. Steeplechase has a great catalog and between them and Timeless, you ought to easily be able to find three discs to purchase, and then shipping is free (and his list price is less than JazzLoft's $20, by at least a couple of dollars). -
A great set, well worth the effort to find. See, Jerry, we can agree on some things.
