  1. Interesting piece, but didn't Alfred sell in 1967 and this session was 1969, so why does Kaplan write that ???
  2. They don't even stock SPEARMINT Altoids at my local Publix, just peppermint, so I'm not exactly expecting to find ginger anytime soon.
  3. To borrow from a fellow member, Jim, *Clasp*!
  4. Considering how long his efforts must have took, I'm thinking it was War and Peace.
  5. This has been brought up tonite by AB and at the same time, listening to Jim S.'s discs also suggests to me that it is a discussion ripe for the having. AB asked things like, are you supposed to try to stump people? Are cuts from a Mosaic set too obvious? Does it have to be jazz, what about "cool instrumental music"? In the meantime, Jim has included stuff that I wouldn't have considered at all. So, #1, I'd like to suggest that we agree to stick to jazz, in its many countless forms and not stray into other genres. It is a jazz board, even as we talk about other musical forms with almost as much enthusiasm. #2, as to AB's questions, I would say that the point is NOT to stump people or to find the most obscure recordings. Pick tunes you like by artists you admire. Don't go looking for obscurities, but don't avoid them either. Give a mix. Make it a tune that will be recognized by an artist you might not expect. Find a middle ground-not too easy and not too hard. Music from Mosaic sets are fine-Dr. J. used one himself. Any source is fine, too-CD, LP, private recording even. I used a track from a VHS tape. As people are getting their own compilations lined up, I think it would be a good idea to hash out opinions on these matters, especially for people who missed the earlier discussions of these issues.
  6. OK, I took my medicine. Disc 2-second verse, same as the first. I won't bore you with the details. Cut 5 was the best and that's an extremely relative term. #2 I kind of dug but it got boring. #3 and #10 are jazz? Don't think so.
  7. Yes, but what was he reading during all of his exertions?
  8. I mean, participate at all. May I suggest that we discuss intervals in a different thread?
  9. Well, I hate to pee in the punch bowl, but my response to Disc 1 ranged from, "OK" to "pretty nice" to "this sucks big time" to "this really sucks big time" to "how in the hell could this suck even worse than the last one?" Sorry, but I'm being brutally frank here. I certainly hope others enjoy this one more than I did. The rundown for Disc 1: Track 1-Monk, Ask Me Now. I was surprised when the band came in after the super long solo piano opening. The tenor has certainly ridden the Trane a few times around the track. OK. EDIT: Don't want to imply I'm guessing its Monk, just saying its Monk's tune. Track 2-What the hell is this? Don't Know, Don't Care , hereafter abbreviated DKDC. Track 3-Not a clue; didn't do much for me either. Track 4-Kind of liked this-the riff the band was playing behind the soloist sounded awfully familiar. The trumpeter reminded me of one of those high-noted trumpeters that played with Blood Sweat and Tears-Marvin Stamm or Lew Soloff? Track 5-JB-the end gave it away. OK. Track 6-Outside of Ella, don't really know the chick singers. Track 7-No clue whatsoever. Track 8-I thought of Houston Person, from the Prestige years? I know the tune but can't place it. Never been good with organists so I won't hazard a guess. If not Person, maybe Rusty Bryant or another of Prestige's tenor/organ stable? Tracks 9-12. Sheer hell to listen to. One was worse than the last. DKDC. Track 13-Compared to the four that went before, like a sip of water to a parched soul. Relative to the last four, 1,000 stars. In reality, 3. Track 14-Almost Like Being in Love. Zoot, perhaps, with maybe Barry Galbraith? The best tune of the disc. Track 15-not a vibist I'm familiar with, so I'll say Hamp. We'll see if I have the guts to pop on Disc 2 tonite. I'm thinking that like medicine, its best if its taken quickly.
  10. I'm curious the reasons people have for not wanting to participate. Anyone?
  11. As to the question of time between tests, this was one of the reasons I suggested this change. Knowing that your test is coming up ought to mean that you are moving forward on your compilation, and should even solicit assistants/participants ahead of time. I think the sequence should be this: Test #X announces he is shipping/Test #X + 1 should solicit interested parties. Then, by the time Answers are being discussed (not the guessing, the answers), the next test should be shipping. But we could definitely tighten this up.
  12. After reading the thread title, I'm just glad its not a picture of some poor schmoe's Johnson!
  13. That Jim Dye, always helping out! Got mine in today's mail, I'm still a bit afraid to pop it in but I'll try to have some impressions by tomorrow or Monday.
  14. Thanks for the list, Brad. Nice to see them going deeper into the Argo catalog. Maybe there's hope that someday they'll put out my current "Holy Grail", Richard Evans Trio, Home Cookin'. I'm pretty certain it was released at the time-there's no indication otherwise at the Argo discography website I've seen, plus, Eddie Higgins gave me Evans' contact info, and he told me he remembered the session and also going to a Chicago soul food restaurant to have pictures taken for the album. So its gotta exist, but in two or more years, I've never seen it on ebay, while his other LP, Richard's Almanac, shows up at least once a month.
  15. Which was the pet, and which was the street? Chauncey was an Irish Setter. Chicken was the street.
  16. Not cool, Ed, editing this post down to this sentence. But, regardless, I encourage you to check Danny's post above this one. Stay away from this thread, and you'll stay away from DEEP. If Danny is true to his word, I don't see why anyone would feel a need to head for the hills due to DEEP's presence. Apologies Dan I posted, then re-thought - and edited. I checked before I did and since there were no replies, made the edit. I just decided that yes - pretty much Deep has been here and that all I need to do is ignore him like I do the politics. Basically, in retrospect I thought I was wrong in making that post so I edited it. If you'll check the post time and edit time, I think you'll see that my post was edited before any subsequent posts were made. I was hoping no one else had read it but apparently you had. Your "not cool Ed comment" - which I am assuming questions my integrity - could have been avoided had you looked at the times of the post and the edit. Your edit was at 8:19. My post was at 8:22. Believe me, I was in the midst of composing my post when you edited it, and since I hadn't used the Quote function, it had the effect of leaving me responding to something that didn't exist anymore. Its something that's caught me before but I guess I haven't learned the lesson still. Anyway, no biggie-I just want to make sure that people understand DEEP is staying right here and not polluting the rest of the board, so its really pretty easy to stay away from his posts, if you stay around, which I sincerely hope you will.
  17. I've been working my way through my collection and this week, found myself deep into the G's, and I happened to load up on discs from two great players: Bennie Green Al Grey And it suddenly dawned on me, these are two guys who always bring a smile to my face. Such joy and spirit in their playing! A lot like Pops in a way. So what is it about 'bonists? The vocal effects that can be made? Is it the fact that both came up more in the swing era than the bop era? I mean, I love JJ and Curtis Fuller, but those guys don't make me like Al and Bennie. Please join me in giving some love to Al Grey and Bennie Green, cause they sure loved playin' for y'all. B)
  18. How about an artist's rendering, Chuck?
  19. OK, various pets and various streets, but this is the best I got: Chauncey Chicken Maybe for gay porn ...
  21. Daniel has hit the nail on the head, but I must also share this statement from DEEP, taken from his "Olive Branch" thread: So there you have it, folks: If Danny is true to his words, don't see the thread, don't see DEEP, until the "ignore" function is added to the software. So where is the problem????? Thanks, DEEP.
  22. The fact of the matter, Ed, is that Deep has remained in this forum. Don't surf this forum, don't see Deep. And in the meantime, there are dozens and dozens of other active threads. And if you want to parcel out action on Deep's threads, then also parcel out all of Deep's posts on same-they ought not to count, since its just him seeking attention. Look, I agree that Deep is a polarizing character. But that doesn't mean that he automatically gets kicked from any board he appears on, just because his reputation precedes him.
  23. Well, we finally have a name that might almost plausibly be a porn name. Otherwise, I don't see the point of this game, sorry.
  24. Well, my excuses are similar. Its gotten so bad that for Christmas, I plan to take that Miles biography, So What with me on the plane, and it was a present from last Christmas! And yet, I've got three or four books on my list again ... it just doesn't stop.
  25. About the cannibalism in the Andes-that book, Alive, was one of my favorite books growing up! Seriously. But the "regular" cannibalism you guys are talking about is totally different from this nut job. I mean, he wanted to eat his playmates from a young age, to "have them with him forever" and then solicited a volunteer to be killed and eaten! I can't believe this guy is even on trial-I think if it happend hear you'd say "not guilty by reason of insanity" pretty damn quick. Moose, that was the funniest thing you've ever posted!
