The recording you saw was probably 'Live and Burnin' at Freddie Jetts'. This is terrific record. Granted, I love Esther, back to the records with Johnny Otis. Atlantic tried everything they knew to make Ms. Phillips a star but it just didn't happen. Grab this one. It's excellent.

I've got his two sessions for Groove Merchant recorded in 1972 and 1974. Blues Farm is ok-not essential or anything but ok. The Desmond I think is pretty good. I recall hearing it years ago but I've never owned it. The Idris Muhammad is utterly expendable. Don't waste your money-unless of course you'd like to make me an offer for my LP copy. lol. Blues Farm and Spanish Blue are decent LPs but they don't get much play on my turntable which I guess means that they have faded in importance. Unless you are a Carter freak I'd say you can pass them up. It's hard to believe the Farrell with Chic and John Mcloughlin has never been out on CD. This is one of my favorite LPs. I saw Farrell with Elvin a few times and always thought he was great. Another fine Farrell recording is what I think was his last. 'Skateboard Park' with Chic on piano came out on Don Schlitten's Xanadu label. Also check Farrell on Frank Butler's Xanadu LP 'Wheelin' and Deelin'' with Teddy Edwards joining Farrell in a two tenor front line. It was Xanadu 169, recorded October 12, 1978 and released in 1980. Skateboard Park was released as Xanadu 174. It was recorded January 29, 1979. and is a quartet date with Mob Magnusson on bass and Lawrence Marable on drums. Good stuff on these dates.

I haven't played this old lp in a long time but it's a great one. James Moody-Never Again! James Moody-Tenor Saxophone Mickey Tucker-Organ Roland Wilson-Fender Bass Eddie Gladden-Drums Muse 5001. Recorded June 8, 1972 Produced by Don Schlitten Engineered by Paul Goodman at RCA This was Moody's working group of the time. I believe this was the first release on the then brand new Muse label. I bought this at the time of its initial release and have never seen it on CD.

What live music are you going to see tonight?
mailman replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Bennie Wallace with Donald Brown, Steve Nelson, and Herlan Riley tonight at the Jazz Standard in N.Y.C. They'll be playing Coleman Hawkins. Should be great. -
I attended that concert and can confirm that it was a disaster. At the end Mary Lou played without Taylor to the delight of the audeince. The rest of the evening was a shipwreck.

I remember first hearing Hamp on records a little more than thirty years ago and being blown away. His book "Raise Up Off Me" is essential reading. It's one of the, if not he greatest book on the jazz life and scene ever. Hamp could flat out PLAY. In the early 1970s he recorded some things on electric piano for Prestige which are largely ependable. "Playin' In The Yard" , recorded live at Montreux has its moments and his work on Dexter Gordons "Blues A La Suisse" is worth hearing but none of this is up to his great playing on the Piano. The all night sessions are terrific, and as was stated above, "The Sermon" is one great recording.

What happens if you play it backwards? lol.

I've got this on LP. Haven't played it in years. I always did prefer it to Bitches Brew. This was the last thing Joe Zawinul recorded that I liked. Maybe I should cue this one up on the turntable and see if it still sounds good to me. It sort of amazes me tha there is still interest in this electric stuff so long after it proved to be a musical dead end; at least to these ears.

Run don't walk; buy this box. There's way too much obsession in this forum with mastering etc. This is classic music and is a must to own if you can afford it.

Thanks for the responses. Just one question. What's a BFT?

Does anyone know whatever became of a guitarist named Michael Howell? I have 2 lps that he led for Milestone in the early 1970s. "Through The Looking Glass"-Milestone 9048 features the Hampton Hawes Trio and was recorded in May of 1973. "In The Silence"-Milestone 9054 features Bennie Maupin and was recorded in April of 1974. These are both excellent recordings. I know that he led a solo date a few years later for the Catalyst label and he may have played electric bass with Dizzy Gillespie in the late 1970s or early 1980s. Also, I have an Art Blakey session on Prestige "Buhaina" Prestige 10067 on which Howell plays on a few tracks. AMG lists him as a rock musician but they do show the Catalyst date. He was a fine player and I've enjoyed these Milestone sessions for some thirty years now. I'd really like to know what became of him because there was a real talent on these recordings and he seems to have just vanished. Thanks in advance for any help.

I just had to replace the laser on my Onkyo 390. Cost me $150. Damn!

I remember this one from back when it came out on Columbia. Nothing all that great here. Not nearly as good as his first date for Milestone or his later sessions for ECM. As I recall, it was an attempt to get in on the jazz-rock thing that was going on around 1970. Most of that stuff was very expendable. I never heard this one all the way through but what I did here did not impress.

Louis Armstrong. Hands down no contest.

Others have written here about Attica Blues so I'll just say that I totally agree. A great recording and now that it's been released on CD everyone should pick it up if they don't have it on LP. I have the Attica Blues Band live 2 LP set recorded in France. Has this been released on CD? It is an absolutely phenomonal concert. In the early 1970s Shepp appeared in a play at the Brooklyn Academy of Music about the life of Billie Holiday. I think he wrote the book and Cal Massey wrote the music. Clifford Jordan played Lester Young. I remember it fondly and wondered if anyone else here saw it.

Like all Ornette's Atlantic session this is a fine session. Not quite as essential as some of the others but still very very good. Pick it up if it's available on CD or if you can find it on vinyl.

I've had the Inner City LP for years but I didn't know about another one on IAI. Was it recorded during the same engagement. I've always considered the Inner City release a treasure and I'd sure like to hear more. Is IAI material available anywhere?
-
I've got the Monk/Ellington and the Bill Evans. OK but by no means essential unless you really love this kind of thing.

The Houston Person recording is titled "The Real Thing". I bought it when it first came out as a two LP set. It's nice and all but I really can't imagine paying $50 for it.

Do You Lend Out Your Mosaic Sets?
mailman replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Never have and Never will. I also never lend out any of my vinyl. To many bad experiences with that when I was younger.
