An interesting web site about Jasha Horenstein
blind-blake replied to blind-blake's topic in Classical Discussion
That is too bad. Where did you get that 1930s poster from Palestine? That's an interesting item. -
cd storage for large collections

Has anybody tried these pages that go into a binder? They look like they could really save space. These ones actually hold the tray cards and booklets. http://www.bagsunlimited.com/cart/detail.a...oduct_id=scd4pp Any opinions? Thanks. -

How did you find your way to 'classical' music?
blind-blake replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in Classical Discussion
1. Did you grow up in a household with classical music around you? Yeah, my dad was into classical music in a big way. Every Sunday morning for my old man, it was the New York Times and classical music (and maybe a little Alan Sherman, the Weavers, or the Red Army Chorus thrown in for good measure). I never really learned to appreciate it, though, until I was an adult, although I listen to a lot more 20th century stuff than he ever did. Sometimes I'll listen to something that rings a bell (I never knew the titles of any of his records), and it will bring back some really nice memories. 2. Did you learn an instrument and experience classical music that way? Nope. Wish I had now. 3. How does classical music relate to your love of jazz? A secondary interest, a primary interest (with jazz in second place) or part of the seamless web of music? I go through phases with music. Sometimes jazz is all I listen to; sometimes its classical; at other times it might be a mixture of the two; and then I might throw in some rock, blues, reggae, world, folk, and/or country that catches my fancy. -
Welcome back! Missed seeing your posts.

I have that CD. It was a gift and it's wonderful. I recognized that picture of young Segovia immediately. He was kind of the Coleman Hawkins of guitar in that he really put it on the map. There were great guitarists before him, of course, but his fame made it possible to have works commissioned, etc, for guitar. It was taken seriously as a concert instrument post-Segovia. I love that recording I mentioned, Castles in Spain. He had a real feeling for Spanish music. He really makes it sound like folk music---delivered with perfect technique. Thanks for the rec. I'll definitely check out Castles in Spain.

What a hoot! Thanks for posting. I loved it, of course. Hava Negeilah is nothing but a folk song, and Bob's pretty familiar with that genre. He recorded a pretty funny version of it on 4/25/62; it's available on his first Bootleg Series box. Anyway, if you want to hear him play out of tune harmonica, listen to his accompanying Nancy Griffith on "Boots of Spanish Leather" from "Other Voices, Other Rooms." On another one of these Lubavitch telethons, they played a taped performance of Bob with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, doing a song I've never heard otherwise. I think its name was "Thank God." I used to have it on a Betamax tape. It was actually a very nice song. I still remember the refrain; it was something like "You can ask him for favors, he'll meet you at the door, but be sure to count your blessings before you ask for more." I'd love to hear it again. You mean his performance with Nancy Griffith is worse? Ohhh myyyyy Goooodddd! I'll have to look for the Tom Petty number. That must be surreal!

Happy Birthday, Magnificent Goldberg!

Cheers MG!!!!! I've learned a lot about soul jazz from you, my man. -
Maybe a little stodgy for some of you, but I like this one by Segovia.. http://www.amazon.com/Andr%C3%A9s-Segovia-...pd_bxgy_m_img_b Of course, I also like old blues recordings. I enjoy those old sounds reaching me across the decades -- the low fidelity is actually a plus, as far as I'm concerned.

Thanks. All 5 CDs are solo? Honestly, I haven't listened to all five. The three Ive heard are all solo, however. I checked on Amazon, and the samples would seem to indicate that they are all solo. If you like him, you will love this.

Anbody seen this video of Dylan doing Hava Nagila on an ultra-orthodox Jewish telethon (I kid you not). Perhaps the single worst harmonica performance of all time! http://www.livevideo.com/video/MikeNobody/...ava-negila.aspx

Yeah, baby, yeah!!!!!!

I recently got this from my library and it's excellent. http://www.amazon.com/Sviatoslav-Richter-C...9111&sr=1-1

Thanks for Live at the Donaueschingen Festival, Karl.

Did I miss something? I enjoyed his music posts. And although I disagree with most of his political views, I never saw him get nasty with them.
-
Hey B. Did you ever buy one of these? If so, what are your thoughts?
-
Or, the post could have been genuinely funny and we were expressing our appreciation. Is that a bad thing?
-
A prime contender for "inane post of the year". I thought that was pretty funny. YMMV. Me too!!!!

ALL of his trio stuff on Vee-Jay is great

You can get the box used at Amazon.ca, but it's not cheap! You may also have to convince a seller to change his/her settings to allow for purchases outside of Canada. Good luck! http://www.amazon.ca/Kajanus-Conducts-Sibe...2168&sr=8-3
