  1. I do think there's something in the idea. Something of the competing high / low status of jazz and the fact that it has always had a stats-y appeal. Generally if I meet a metal fan or folk fan, I know I have something in common with that person. Not necessarily the case with jazz at all, and that is a real quirk of the genre.
  2. Maybe. Sadly I did not pay attention in electronics class, so I am not convinced I could fit the new cartridge myself. We live round the corner from a shop, so I've asked my wife to take it round. The kids have picked up a very endearing habit of putting records on for themselves, which may or may not be connected...
  3. No vinyl for me for a while. My stylus is buggered. Ugh. Tedious.
  4. This is so sad.
  5. I like what Freeman does to Baker (whose playing I tend to like or dislike on a by-album basis depending on the sidemen). There are some quite unexpected chords in there. Not super unexpected. But enough to spin Baker off into new directions.
  6. John Coltrane - Plays I always think of this one as the forgotten jewel. Rarely mentioned but some of Coltrane's absolute best playing.
  7. If nothing else, it will give them something to tell the therapist.
  8. Arthur Blythe - Lennox Avenue Breakdown This one was a big hit with the kids. I later found my six year old writing a post it note to remind himself to ask for the record more ("this sacserfon record from botim left").
  9. Yeah. The new one. I'm very happy with it too. A great record.
  10. Byard Lancaster - It's Not Up To Us
  11. John Tchicai - Afrodisiaca Background to doing Lego with my daughter
  12. John Coltrane - Interstellar Space A combination of attempts to walk the London Outer Orbital Path, work all nighters and then staying up all night reading election coverage like a goose means I'm pretty knackered today. Trying to blow away the cobwebs with this.
  13. Miles Davis - Bag's Groove
  14. Gosh. That's a big want over here too.
  15. Kujaviak Goes Funky by Namyslowski is also very good.
  16. Thanks! This is something we discussed last time round too (can't recall what the thread was). Purist bluegrass can easily be formulaic and generally requires "blues feeling". Early Bill Monroe obviously has it, as you say, and the earliest Stanley Brothers too, particularly those that John Fahey's Revenant label compiled a few years back: Stanley Brothers – Earliest Recordings: The Complete Rich-R-Tone 78s (1947-1952) That said, I do think that bluegrass is quite flexible, and lends itself well to fusion approaches, so I don't tend to think of it as only being confined to Monroe and the Stanleys.
  17. Still pretty hard to get, no doubt. I wasn't even aware that it was repressed. Seems like a record that is overdue another reissue.
  18. Roscoe Mitchell and Anthony Braxton - Duets Washing up after a particularly heavy lunch party. The Roscoe side of this one is particularly strong. Is this a reissue or original? If the former I didn't know about it.
  19. We've had some chat about Bluegrass recently and I thought I'd start this thread. What are your favourite bluegrass albums? Comps are allowed but more interested in LPs and records.
  20. Josh White – Complete Recorded Works 1929-1940 In Chronological Order Volume 3 (18 March 1935 To March 7 1940) This is a bit of a revelation to me. I had always associated with Josh White with polite versions of the blues for the early coastal revival audience. I hadn't realised he had a previous history as an urban-leaning country bluesman. As I've mentioned in the past, I have a particular thing for blues musicians who have softer lighter voices, and don't go for the bass falsetto.
  21. Wishing everyone a quick recovery
