  1. There's a flood of these sorts of article at the moment, many of them, like this one, reviews of these sorts of books. Something seems to have tipped in the legacy media. Whilst I do agree that it feels like culture is a bit 'stuck' at the moment, I'm always a bit mystified that so much emphasis is put on algorithms and tech as the only real culprit. However bad culture might be now, is it really any worse than in the late 1990s or early 2000s? I remember that as an era of near-complete cultural exhaustion, with the massive cultural gatekeepers still in control.
  2. Finally got round to listening to this. A really nice record.
  3. Firehouse Five Plus Two – At Disneyland Practicing in advance of the inevitable Gen Z-friendly tiktok-inspired Dixieland revival.
  4. Would you class this as salsa?
  5. James Newton - Paseo del Mar
  6. That's a good one! Raises the related question of why there are so comparatively few soul tunes adopted into the jazz repertoire. There are lots, but it tends to be a very specific list of tunes. That might explain it. Although the saxophone is known for it's 'voice-like' qualities, the fact is that attempts to map soul or gospel vocal styles directly to saxophone are, I think, mostly a smooth jazz thing, and not all that satisfying. I should add that what I was particularly thinking of when starting this thread was groups with multiple horns playing the doo wop arrangements, not just the central melody. It's even harder to think of those.
  7. Kanai, Hideto Group – Q
  8. Weird that there are so few. There seem to be more jazz versions of renaissance multi-part songs than jazz versions of doowop tunes.
  9. Bob Wilber and Kenny Davern – Soprano Summit In Concert
  10. Komeshi Trio (Peter Kolovos, Patrick Shiroishi and Noel Meek) - The Master Speaks Thrice Having just finished: Wild Bill Davison – Jazz On A Saturday Afternoon, Vol. II
  11. Check out Steve Vai's guitar solo at 18 minutes in.
  12. If you aren't playing changes then you are just playing random sounds and the audience hates it.
  13. Max Roach and Archie Shepp – Force
  14. I really enjoyed it. Very fast paced free jazz piano / drum duet. The piano reminds me strongly of the fast bits in Cecil Taylor's music, but the drums are attempting to challenge rather than support. I'll check out the Recursive Tree. Looks good.
  15. John Blum and Jackson Krall Duplexity
  16. Heinz Becker Group Pan: Vielleicht Tau
  17. Yes. Not sure about 10 but there was no shortage.
  18. Duke Ellington And Count Basie – First Time! The Count Meets The Duke Shouldn't have ever been so good.
  19. I never think of Previn as a player at this point in time. How is this?
  20. Weirdly closed mid afternoon on a Saturday. Good experience in The Wax Factor. Small but well chosen jazz selection.
