  1. LA 33 Some revivalist hard salsa.
  2. Sam Rivers - Crystals Mum's upstairs sleeping with the newborn and I am trying to show the two older kids that things are still the same.
  3. It's a great one. The one I'd pick out of all his solo records.
  4. Hector Lavoe - De Ti Depende
  5. I hadn't noticed that everyone on the sleeve has a moustache. Branford's looks like it took exactly 14 3/4 years to grow.
  6. Stuck with me for years. The rare modern song that really is imbued with the feeling of folk music.
  7. I love the whiplash between the delicate post bop on side one and the track "Jug's Not Dead" that opens the Freemans' set. But its also immediately obvious which of the two is going to be the deeper.
  8. Despite Ellis trying to psych him out.
  9. This looks interesting. I tend to see Sanders records as being strongly dependant on the keyboardist (not least because Sanders likes to build up to his own entry). Hicks is one of my favourites.
  10. Some great stuff here.
  11. Miguel Zenón – Alma Adentro This is a good record.
  12. I am not a "jokes" guy but one that stuck in my head was: What's the difference between a banjo player and a gorilla? A gorilla might be on the way to a gig. Stuck in head not necessarily the same as made me laugh.
  13. I don't think we have a thread on favourite salsa records, despite the genres long jazz adjacent history. So - Let rip. New York, Puerto Rico, Cali, wherever. I'll start with the record that got me into salsa and Latin music in general: Willie Colon and Hector Lavoe – Cosa Nuestra
  14. Not a great week (yet more illnesses), so playing it out with Albert.
  15. That's right. I just meant not a recent box set or double CD compilations, really. I like to listen to The Musical Event, as it appeared at the time, whether that is an original LP or a classic comp that made a splash in the LP era.
  16. Bill Charlap – Stardust Surprised to find a Bill Charlap album that I actually enjoyed, as I normal really dislike his records and schtick. The tunes with Frank Wess are particularly good.
  17. Joe Arroyo Y La Verdad – Arroyando Nice to be reminded how good this one is.
  18. That's a classic. I love that one.
  19. It's a great record. One I've dreamed of finding for years. But I'm still quite weirded out that this is being reissued when so much else hasn't been.
  20. I quite enjoyed this one. As you say flavoured nicely by being unknown.
  21. Fruko Y Sus Tesos – El Violento The weirdest shit gets reissued these days.
  22. This is my favourite record of Sorey as drummer.
  23. Sadao Watanabe – Rendezvous
  24. Rodney Whitaker – Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow Farid Barron on piano is an interesting player. I don't know him at all...
