Joe Farnsworth - In What Direction Are You Headed? This wasn't what I expected. A front line of Immanuel Wilkins and Kurt Rosenwinkel is quite off brand for Farnsworth or even the Smoke label. It's a good record, despite the disastrous jacket. Dudley Moore – Plays The Theme From Beyond The Fringe & All That Jazz

Jack Sheldon & His West Coast Friends – Angel Wings This one really is good. With thanks to @jazzcorner

It's not my thing much either. People seem very impressed by the solo records. More to do with the fact that they are solo and the way that they are recorded (including the clicks of fingers on keys) rather than what is actually being played. He does seem to be being used as a model. I was listening to Surrender by Bendik Giske, and that is clear Stetson worship.

An artist who is very rarely mentioned on this forum. I have in recent months increasingly seen him, or at least his solo saxophone and electronic pieces, referenced as a major inspiration for many up and coming players. What's the forum view?

Nice record and glad to see if getting a re release. Bottom left - what car is that? It looks pretty bizarre Bottom left - what car is that? It looks pretty bizarre I'd be interested to know any records on this label that you think are real stand outs. I'm trying to cut down on my 'to listen' list but I'm always intrigued by good records by old timers.

I just mean retrospective, really. Here's it's neo-spiritual jazz rather than neo-bop. If it's a big favourite, I'll give it another listen.

What live music are you going to see tonight?

Thanks. Good to know. I'm likely keeping a low profile for the next few months, but I'll keep an eye on it. -
Jyoti – Mama, You Can Bet! I did quite enjoy this record even if in it's own way it is as piously retro as a Wynton Marsalis album (something which I also quite enjoy). I'm not sure I would listen to it again. Overall, it is fine. Expectation meeting.

Recommendations for Record Stores in...

Thanks! How long would it take to drive from one to the other? I'm likely to be Ubering. Is that a fool's errand or is it a sensible way to get around? As a European, it is easy to get caught out by maps of US cities. The scales are very different. -

How is it? I was chatting about it today with friends and none of us knew it. LJF has some of the more okay events on there this year. -
Is this good? I don't know it.

Recommendations for Record Stores in...

Is there a big drive between them? I'm not clear on the distances. It looks to me like they are effectively the same city, but what do I know? Is there a big drive between them? I'm not clear on the distances. It looks to me like they are effectively the same city, but what do I know? Also, which Zia location is most worth going to? I'm not sure how much time I'll have. -
They're some of my favourites of hers.

Lots of jazz deaths get big obits. Wayne Shorter, Jaimie Branch and Pharaoh Sanders got generous and well-researched articles across the press. Whilst I accept that Wayne Shorter is a substantially bigger name, I was surprised that Bley didn't get what the latter two did at least. The article in the Guardian in particular was pretty cursory.

I didn't know that. Where did you hear that from?

For some reason this has just showed up for me. Thank you. -
In newspapers. I expected that she would receive much more substantial attention. Many of the obituaries are quite perfunctory.

Oddly underwhelming obits. I don't know what I was expecting, but I had wrongly assumed her life would be widely celebrated. She seems to have far less recognition than other recent jazz deaths. Alternatively, maybe there is just a lot going on.
-
Among her other achievements, she is responsible for probably the only genuinely great Christmas album out there.

Thanks! An Instagram contact has also recommended Double Nickels, Stinkweed and Record High, but The In Groove seems to be the consensus. -
It is that, although it is also closely aligned to and appears to support the way in which the company has sought to portray and capitalise on its post-acquisition cost-cutting measures. So a monument to white reaction on the one hand and to cynical corporate co-option of a good cause for financial gain on the other. I am not sure either of those really needs a monument. The discussion in the thread is in any case clearly far wider, and relates to the changes enacted by the acquirer in general, beyond the clickbaity headline and lede of the original article. What about "JazzTimes' acquisition by the BeBop Channel Corporation"?
