The league held its draft last week immediately after the NFL's draft. Traditionally, the CFL would hold its draft first because its training camps open earlier. However, teams were reluctant to spend first round picks on good prospects who might get drafted by and sign with the NFL, so they decided to wait until everyone, teams and players both, knew what the situation was vis a vis the NFL. The Ticats had the first pick, and chose a DT named Linden Gaydosh. Today it was announced that he has signed with Carolina as an undrafted free agent. However, apparently he did not receive a signing bonus, so the chances are slim that the Panthers will keep him. Here are the draft results: http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/feature/?id=94440 Here is the story on Gaydosh: http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=423024

I enjoyed Daniel's album Lines, and I've heard of The Seldom Scene, so I'll look forward to this one. Jazz Trumpeter/Composer Daniel Rosenthal & His Father Phil Rosenthal, The Acclaimed Bluegrass Singer/Songwriter/ Instrumentalist, To Release "Fly Away," Their First Collaboration, June 4 CD Release Shows Planned Throughout the Spring & Summer In the Boston Area & Several Connecticut Cities; New York & Washington Dates to Be Announced April 26, 2013 Trumpeter/composer Daniel Rosenthal grew up playing folk music in the family band led by his father, acclaimed vocalist, songwriter, and bluegrass string player Phil Rosenthal, but he didn't follow in his dad's footsteps. Instead, he poured his creative energy into jazz, becoming a key member of Boston's storied Either/Orchestra and leading his own forward-thinking quintet. But The Rosenthals' lifelong musical ties have recently asserted themselves, and on their first recording collaboration, Fly Away, father and son find plenty of common ground. Fly Away's richly evocative original songs and traditional tunes were arranged and produced by Daniel, who infuses the music with an unmistakable jazz sensibility, and the album showcases Phil's wondrously warm voice, a burnished Johnny Cash baritone that resonates with emotional authority. The new CD will be released on June 4 by Phil's American Melody Records. "On paper it doesn't seem like it would work," Daniel says. "But when I play with Phil I tone down the volume a lot. I'm playing long tones really softly behind his vocals, trying to emulate what a fiddle player would do, filling up the spaces when he's not singing. It's definitely a challenge to make the trumpet fit in with a folk or bluegrass instrumentation." On most of the original tunes Daniel added music to lyrics written and largely abandoned by Phil some three decades ago (around the time his son was born). Daniel revels in creating offbeat settings for his father's world-weary voice, and sang tenor harmonies himself. (His mother Beth Sommers and sister Naomi Sommers contribute harmony vocals as well.) For Phil, who has always produced his own albums and has never really collaborated on songwriting, turning the responsibilities over to his son opened up new musical possibilities. "He had definite ideas, and I was happy to have him in that role. He has a lot of influences that he brought into the project, making it a real blending of folk, bluegrass, and jazz." A Connecticut native, Phil Rosenthal is best known for his long run as lead singer and guitarist (beginning in 1977) with the popular bluegrass group The Seldom Scene. He's also nationally renowned for his instrumental skills on banjo and mandolin, and as a songwriter and record producer. In 1986 he launched his solo career as well as American Melody (with his wife Beth Sommers), a recording company devoted to producing bluegrass and folk music for children and families. He performed around New England with his wife and two children as the Sommers-Rosenthal Family Band, which served as the primary vehicle for his prolific output as a songwriter (his "Muddy Water" was covered by Johnny Cash, Bill Monroe, and Nick Cave, among others). In 1994, the Connecticut Commission on the Arts appointed him the official Connecticut State Troubadour. Born in Silver Spring, MD, and raised in Guilford, CT, Daniel Rosenthal early on gravitated to the trumpet, rather than the stringed instruments all around him, and figured out ways to fit the horn into the family ensemble. Louis Armstrong was a major inspiration. By 13 Daniel was gigging with a trio (trumpet, organ, drums) at local restaurants and coffeehouses, and in high school he worked on absorbing the jazz trumpet lineage. At New England Conservatory, he studied with soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy, trombonist/arranger Bob Brookmeyer, and Charles Schlueter, principal trumpeter for the Boston Symphony. Daniel joined the Either/Orchestra in 2006, and in 2011 American Melody released his debut as a leader, Lines, four tracks of which featured a banjo ("There's something about trumpet and banjo, that metal on metal blend, that's always intrigued me"). "Growing up in the countryside changes how you hear music," Daniel told DownBeat's Geoffrey Himes last year. "I played a lot with my father and his friends, and his friends would yell at me, 'Play the melody, play more simply.' That seeped into my sensibility. Ironically, at the NEC, Steve Lacy and Bob Brookmeyer were always after me to streamline my playing, to say more with fewer notes, which is pretty much the same thing." The Rosenthals will be performing at the following venues in support of Fly Away: 6/6 Black Eyed Sally's, Hartford, CT (8pm); 6/8 Cafe Nine Bluegrass Hoedown, New Haven, CT (9pm); 6/11 Cantab Lounge, Cambridge, MA (9pm); 7/7 Lilypad, Cambridge, MA (6-9pm); 7/11 Leif Nilsson Spring Street Studio, Chester, CT (7pm); 7/12 Hartford (CT) State House, lunchtime concert series (12noon); 7/14 Whitney Center, Hamden, CT (2pm); 7/25 Guilford (CT) Library, "Music Under the Stars" (7pm); 7/31 Daniel Rosenthal Quintet at the Lilypad, Cambridge, MA (8pm); 8/6 Middletown (CT) Green (6-9pm). New York and Washington dates are in the works. Thanks for the moral support! It should arrive Wednesday. After I hook it up to make sure that everything is OK, I will need to dicker with the ISPs to see who will give me a good bargain.

Using this site http://www.thefind.com/ .which is really good...I found this site. Never used them, but they list a 24 Ultrasharp under $204. It doesn't mention if they're new or refurbished. http://www.serverfuture.info/ Blue Train, what is the "Ex. Tax" listed at the ServerFuture website? It consistently doubles the price of the monitors. Is that a VAT that Americans don't have to pay? It looks like my budget won't allow me to go much higher than $200.

Wolfgang Dauner "Rischka's Light Faces"

I have packed away an LP called Rischkas Soul. As I recall, Rischka was Dauner's producer, and I assumed that they perhaps unkowingly dropped the apostrophe. -

Thanks! I've got to study my finances for the month of May, which will be tight; but my preference is to buy quality and keep it until it dies. My car is an '87 Camry with 285,000 on it!

I just took a quick look, and the UltraSharps seem to be going for $300 and up. I think that's more than I want to go for. I'll have to think about it.

On top of which they didn't get much from dropping that low in the draft to pick him. Worst part beside them not picking a DL which like the Raiders they desperately needed.....like the Giants they could have taken Barrett Jones. He was probably the best lineman avialble from Alabama. He started out as a guard. Because of injuries was moved to left tackle in 2011 and won the Outland that year. Moved to center as a senior and won the Rimmington. They only player to win both at two different positions. As well 3 National Championships at three different positions and All-American at three positions. If he came out last year as a left tackle he goes in the first round. As a center/guard..... Hell, they could have even taken Brian Schwenke if they wanted a center that bad. As in, Jerry Jones strikes again. The difference between him and Al Davis is that at one time Al Davis knew what he was doing as de facto GM. Worst picks would be by the Lions and Bears. The Raiders had a Al Davis flashback. They dropped from the 3rd overall to 12 for a single 2nd round pick to pick the fastest DB....he just open heart surgery last Nov to repair a torn inferior vena cava ...it's honestly is a miracle he's even alive. The JETS basically drafted for whomever finally replaces Ryan with two defensive players when their biggest problem is on offense. The Browns picked the player Miami should have if they were going LB instead of OL. Browns needed a WR last year and they picked another QB and a RB. They still need a WR for whomever is QB....and they picked a LB when their defense wasn't the problem. The JETS are supposedly interesed in Ryan Nassib or Geno Smith. What does it say about Ryan Nassib (who beside Barkley was touted to be the most Pro-ready QB's) that his former coach passed on him as QB for someone (who unless the Bills are changing to a read option offense) will be sitting a couple years? The Hoodie got the Nos. 52, 83, 102, 229 from the Vikings for trading the 29th. That's a lot of picks by the Vikings for a 29th, which brings up once again just how litttle the Raiders and Cowboys recieved in return. I like the Rams picks. Bradford needs a WR and if Ogletree can stay out of trouble...he might be the best LB picked in the first round. A big caution for the Jets first pick, the DB- he's had FIVE surgeries already. Most of which are minor. There draft wasn't that good overall. The strangest pick was Richardson. He' doesn't fit Ryan's system like Lotulelei would have....but like I said....I really think this draft was for whomever was finally going to replace Ryan after this year. He needs to go to Canada and show he can play QB for a few years. He's still only 25. Tebow is exciting, and I think that he would do well in the Canadian league. However, I have read that their scouts feel that his arm strength is not sufficient for the big Canadian field. Montreal has the CFL rights to Tebow. Chicago's new head coach is former Montreal coach Marc Trestman. Could Trestman be interested in Tebow for the Bears?

OK, I will look at the Ultrasharp. I was originally thinking about buying from amazon or newegg, but it occurred to me that two weeks ago I was given a ten-week free membership with BJ's, and they sell computers and monitors. BJ's has four Samsung monitors, but they are 22". The price is typically $139.
