  1. Dave Mann has died. I had his bubble gum card in 1959. I met him in 1980 in Pittsburgh when he was the head coach of the semi-pro Toronto team, whose name may have been the Grizzlies. They were playing the Pittsburgh Colts, who had former Steeler Jack "Hydroplane" Delaplaine on the team. Nice guy. Much shorter than I had imagined him to be. http://tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=396669 ***** Rob Murphy has retired. http://tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=396640 http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/argos-tackle-rob-murphy-retires/article2441515/ ***** Eric Wilson has retired. http://tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=396609 ***** The Eskimos have released Andrew Nowacki. http://tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=396663
  2. My pet peeve is the mispronunciation of the word forte. Forte in Italian means loud and is pronounced "for-tay". Forte in French means strength and is pronounced "fort". But it is common in this neck of the woods for people to say for-tay when they are referring to a strength and should be saying fort.

  5. I received word today that Milton Suggs' new album called Lyrical, Volume 1, will be released July 24. I'm looking forward to hearing it.
  6. You're killing me too, FFA!
  7. Jim, that's your funniest post since you suggested that the Four Guys in Hell were The Four Freshmen!
  8. Eugene Polley, the inventor of the television remote control, has died at age 96. http://www.newsobserver.com/2012/05/22/2082479/eugene-polley-inventor-of-tv-remote.html
  9. I read at mobileread.com today that this deal expires May 24.
  10. As far as I know Ace never released Sun recordings. U.K. label Charly issued lots of Sun material, but had to withdraw their releases because they turned out not to be legit. Rhino in the United States and Bear Family in Germany released CDs and boxed sets with Sun material that were legit. Hans, I believe that you are correct - it was Charly, not Ace. My apologies.
  11. If I recall correctly, in the 90s I saw in the stores a number of Ace releases of Sun Records material. I don't think that anyone else has released much of it since.
  12. Advertise in AARP's magazine!
  13. When a musician is said to be unable to read music, does that mean that he cannot sight read and play well immediately what is there on the chart, or does that mean that the written notes on the chart mean nothing to him?
  14. I always preferred the instrumental pop and rock on the radio. I feel that hearing those records was more important than any one jazz album. When I was fifteen I bought my first jazz record, the Ramsey Lewis Trio's Hang On Ramsey. That was a big step for me because I always found the liner notes of jazz albums to be intimidating. I probably would have been content to listen to that level of music had nothing else come along. Four months later I bought my first hard core jazz album, Groove Holmes' Soul Message, on the strength of his hit single Misty. That one is still one of my very favorite albums, and it released any fear of intimidation.
  15. Last month someone, I think Pete C, pointed out that John Handy's Live at Monterey was available for only $1.98 when the songs were bought separately, so that's what I've done now.
  16. Correct Chuck! It's Weeb Ewbank. In 1960 and 1961 I watched all of the Baltimore Colts' home games on NBC. In those days, the league did not want the television audience to see more than what the fans at the game could see. So even though the Colts were the defending champions, I never saw what Weeb Ewbank looked like.
  17. Here's one for those of us of the older generation.
  18. Mike McGrady, the columnist who organized the writing and publishing of Naked Came the Stranger, has died. RIP. http://www.latimes.c...0,1699425.story
  19. Happy Birthday Chuck!
  20. Correct Paul! It's Terrell Owens. By the way, there was no way I would have gotten Goldie Hawn, Dave.
  21. See if you get this one.
  22. This is involved with Facebook, so you may not be interested. Amazon asks you to list your favorite song, and then you get the $2 mp3 credit. I don't know when the offer expires. http://www.amazon.com/gp/socialmedia/promotions/anc-mp3/
  23. Correct FFA!
  24. Thanks guys! I'm pretty sure that I picked up Indestructible! from a bargain bin at Borders ten years ago, but have never opened it up. I'll put Free For All and Ugetsu on my Amazon wish list.
  25. I enjoy Wayne Shorter's 1964 Blue Note albums as a leader very much. It occurs to me that I'm a little vague about his work with Art Blakey in the 1963-64 time frame. Can anyone recommend just an album or two of Blakey's when Wayne was in the group from that time period?
