  1. As you know, I love the week before the opening weekend because of all the season previews and picks. Here's the first one I've found. Toronto Argonauts. http://www.tsn.ca/cf...ature/?id=68002 ***** The Als have also cut Canadian QB Kyle Graves. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/alouettes-cut-canadian-quarterbacks-quinlan-graves/article4360370/
  2. About 12 years ago I went to San Antonio and went to the final day of the rodeo, where Loretta Lynn was the featured performer. It was just after Bush II was sworn in, and Loretta made some comment about how it was great that a real Christian conservative was in the White House and that other crook (or something to that effect) was gone. The entire audience went into wild applause. All the men except me were wearing cowboy hats and boots. I felt like standing up and saying, "Just one cotton pickin' minute, I'm a New York Jew leftist atheist and I take exception to that comment," but, alas, I kept my mouth shut and my body intact. LOL Pete! Now you know how people felt when the Dixie Chicks said on stage that they were ashamed to be from the same state as George W. Bush!
  3. Happy Birthday 2012 Parkertown!

    Dogon A.D.

The current Amazon price for Dogon AD is $999.99. http://www.amazon.com/Dogon-A-D-Julius-Hemphill/dp/B005H7Q0KU?SubscriptionId=AKIAJ7T5BOVUVRD2EFYQ&tag=camels-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B005H7Q0KU
  8. British Columbia Lions 24....Edmonton Eskimos 16 http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=398949 The Lions' backup quarterback this year will be Mike Reilly, who's had a good pre-season.
  9. Dave Naylor is reporting that the league is set to announce a US tv deal with broadcasts for the second half of the season and all playoff games including the Grey Cup, live. The league has said for years that the money is secondary when it comes to a US television contract. It needs the exposure for recruiting purposes. The more American college players see the CFL games on tv, the more likely they will be willing to sign with the league. No link yet.
  10. In recent years comics have been at the top of best seller lists, so it's nice that you consider comics culture. I do. I think think the leading cause of there being more of interest in local book stores is the pricing laws. Had Amazon been forced to sell books 30% higher I'm sure most of our independent shops would have survived too. Quincy, it wasn't Amazon who put the local bookshops out of business. It was Barnes & Noble and Borders. The publishers gave those two volume discounts, and the small shops couldn't compete against that.
  11. The Als have cut Kyle Quinlan, and he will return to McMaster for a fifth year. ***** Eskimo offensive coordinator Marcus Crandell has been out the past ten days with mono. This makes me even more pessimistic about the team going into the year with Jyles and Joseph at quarterback. No links yet.
  12. Hamilton Tiger-Cats 26....Winnipeg Blue Bombers 25 http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=398866 Eric Wilbur missed a 38 yard field goal attempt on the last play of the game which would have given the Bombers the win. That miss may have cost him a spot on the roster. He's an American, and with the import ratio, an American has to be exceptional to make a team as a kicker.
  13. The Argos cut fifteen today, including Ricky Santos and six-year NFL veteran Samie Parker. http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=398837
  14. Happy Birthday 2012 CJ!
  15. I wound up getting Ellington at Newport.
  16. I remember this from Jerry Wexler's obituary: Wexler worked for Billboard Magazine, I guess it was ca. 1950. The black records chart was called "Race Records". The editor felt that that was inappropriate, and told Wexler to come up with a new name. The popular non-blues black music was often called "rhythm" music, so he called the chart "Rhythm & Blues", meaning that the one chart actually included two types of music. Over time, rhythm music came to be called rhythm & blues because of the chart. MG, I suspect that you are making a mistake by thinking that a record's presence on the rhythm & blues chart would indicate that it was not considered to be a blues record. I think that all blues records were included on that chart at that time.
  17. Today's game was something rare, an afternoon pre-season game. Toronto Argonauts 25....Montreal Alouettes 20 http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/argos-rally-to-preseason-win-over-alouettes/article4350560/ http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=398738
  18. I've been out of touch for fifteen years, but it seemed to me in the 90s that all of the current blues people were musically rock people marketed as blues to distinguish them from the hair bands and other types the youngsters were calling rock at the time. For example, a favorite of mine was Kenny Neal. I went to the '90 and '91 New Orleans Jazzfests, and the blues stage was occupied by bands who were very rockish.
  19. Anybody else remember Dan Dorfman, the columnist who made frequent television appearances touting stocks? He has passed away at age 80. http://www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-me-dan-dorfman-20120619,0,5305034.story
  20. Jim, I remember Summer Samba and Mas Que Nada well of course (I had them both!), but I had no idea they were ever on anybody's top ten list. Thanks!
  21. Happy Birthday 2012 Adam!
  22. My order of a sheet of the Miles stamp arrived today. Very attractive. I may put it in a frame.
  23. Thanks MG! I remember the r&b chart, and the c&w chart as well, if I'm not mistaken. I just don't remember an adult mainstream chart.
  24. It's late in the day, but Happy Birthday Delightfulee!
  25. Here's a simple question: Didn't Billboard have a chart in the 60s for radio stations that catered to adults? If so, what was it called? I would like to google it and see some examples. All I remember is the Hot 100 chart which reflected the rock and soul Top 40 stations. Surely Steve & Eydie must have had a chart of their own, but I don't remember it.
