It now looks like Buck Pierce will be out four weeks. As backup tandems go, Alex Brink and Joey Elliot are as good as there are in the league, so the Bombers are as prepared as they could hope to be. http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=400805 ***** Noel Prefontaine will have surgery on his hip, and will miss four to six months. At age 38, you have to think that his career is over. http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=400819

aloc, I'm still waiting for word on what the CFL has in mind for its post-Labor Day games to be broadcast in the US. I'm not aware of any US cable channel currently carrying the games.

Sandusky Investigation Findings
GA Russell replied to Dave James's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
As you know, I agree with JETman that college athletics are out of whack. In fact, I think that many universities are out of whack in other areas besides athletics. But I am troubled by one aspect of what we are talking about. None of these people have been put on trial except Sandusky. Louis Freeh is the cop, judge and jury of his report. I thought that we didn't do that in this country. I suspect that everything in Freeh's report is true. But I see on the internet a hang 'em high mentality before any of these people have had the opportunity to respond to specific accusations and present their sides of the story. I hope that all of them are brought to (criminal) trial. I also would like to learn what if anything the local police knew and failed to act upon. -
The Argos have put Noel Prefontaine on the nine-game injured list, and have signed Swayze Waters. http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=400733 ***** Despite all the talk of Marc Trestman wanting to coach in the NFL, he has agreed to a four-year extension to coach the Alouettes. Remember, the coaches' salaries count against the cap. http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=400743

Drew Tate has decided to have his shoulder operated on. He will miss at least four months, and maybe the entire season. http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=400676 ***** I forgot to say this about the Argo game. Noel Prefontaine has been lousy by his standards so far. He re-injured his hip late in the second quarter, and the Argos had rookie Anthony Alix kicking in his place. Alix did fine. Now the Argos are looking at an import kicker named Swayze Waters. (That name reminds me of John Cameron Swayze putting a Timex underwater attached to an outboard motor's screws! Remember that?) http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=400670

Edmonton Eskimos 42....Winnipeg Blue Bombers 10 http://scoreboards.c...final/W1017.htm Good night for Jyles. The Eskimos built up a 32-0 lead, and coasted from there. Guess who got hurt again. This time it was his foot. ***** Saskatchewan Roughriders 23....British Columbia Lions 20 http://scoreboards.c...final/W1018.htm Great hard-fought game. The Riders are the only undefeated team left. Tristan Jackson started off the fourth quarter by returning a missed FG attempt 129 yards for the TD. 130 is the length of the field from the dead line to the goal line. Immediately before the game, the Sask premier announced that the building of a new stadium is now a definite go. http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=400615 ***** Hamilton Tiger-Cats 36....Toronto Argonauts 27 http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=400647 Chris Williams ran back two kicks for TDs in the first half, and caught a TD pass as well. Ricky Ray had a bad night with his acccuracy.

These popular music festivals in New Orleans and Montreal make a lot of money for some people. I went to the 1990 and 1991 New Orleans Jazzfests. They had a jazz stage on which modern jazz was played at all times. It never stopped. I don't know if that is true for Montreal's. If a jazz fan can go to a festival and hear non-stop jazz, that's good enough for me. He can ignore the non-jazz music that appeals to others.

Just as we know that the Catholic priests were not the only clergymen to abuse children (although the Catholic Church seems to have received all of the attention), I strongly suspect that Penn State is not the only university with seriously wrong things they are covering up. Call me cynical, but that's how I see it. -
Montreal Alouettes 33....Calgary Stampeders 32 http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=400486 The Als played poorly, and the fans were booing. The Stamps led 32-20 with less than three minutes remaining. But the Als came back to score two TDs to win the game at the end.

As the link above says, Drew Tate's injury is a dislocated shoulder. I feel that this is career-threatening. As we saw with Jesse Lumsden, once it happens the first time, it's easy for it to happen again and again. ***** Anthony Calvillo's shoulder injury will not keep him from starting tonight's game. http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=400317

I'll let you know if this is any good. "LifeTimes," New CD by Brubeck Brothers Quartet, To Be Released by Blue Forest Records July 24 A Celebration of Dave Brubeck's Music By Bassist/Trombonist Chris Brubeck, Drummer Dan Brubeck, Guitarist Mike De Micco, & Pianist Chuck Lamb Summer Concert Dates Followed by Fall Tour of Russia July 11, 2012 Since the early 1970s, Chris and Dan Brubeck have performed and recorded frequently with their father Dave in Two Generations of Brubeck, the New Brubeck Quartet, and Trio Brubeck. Now, on the Brubeck Brothers Quartet's new CD LifeTimes, they and "honorary brothers" Mike DeMicco (guitar) and Chuck Lamb (piano) have chosen to honor Brubeck père by reimagining a number of his best-known songs. "Dave Brubeck's music is rich with challenging chord progressions and beautiful melodies," says Chris. "Dave is one of the biggest inspirations in all our lives, and we all thought it was time to salute his compositions, adding the BBQ's fresh approach to some of his most enduring tunes." Those would be "Jazzanians," which first appeared on Trio Brubeck (1993) and was written in honor of the like-named multiracial South African student band led by eldest brother Darius Brubeck; "Kathy's Waltz," introduced on Dave's Time Out (1959) and named for his only daughter; "My One Bad Habit," inspired by a remark Ella Fitzgerald made to Dave ("My one bad habit is falling in love") and first sung by Carmen McRae on Dave and Iola Brubeck's 1961 all-star album The Real Ambassadors; and "The Duke," an Ellington tribute first recorded by Dave in 1955 and heard here in an arrangement with "a little bit of half time and double time from the first bar," says Dan, "with those grooves alternating throughout the track." Also included is Dave's biggest hit "Take Five" (composed by Paul Desmond), which Dan kicks off with a second-line New Orleans groove in 5/4, along with two originals by pianist Lamb ("Go Round," "The Girl from Massapequa") and one by guitarist DeMicco ("Prezcence"). Dan Brubeck, Mike DeMicco, Chuck Lamb, Chris Brubeck (photo: Barry Schwartz) LifeTimes, BBQ's fourth CD and their first since 2008's Classified, is the latest chapter in the brothers' near-lifelong series of collaborations. Chris (b. 1952) and Dan (b. 1955) benefited from early exposure to the family business: the Brubeck Quartet regularly rehearsed at the Brubecks' Connecticut home, and drummer Joe Morello would leave his practice set behind. "He let me bang around on 'em," Dan recalls. "I used his drums all through high school." Chris, who started on piano at age 5 and trombone in fourth grade, met Trummy Young, Louis Armstrong's trombonist, while Young and Armstrong were working with his parents on The Real Ambassadors and years later, as an adult, got to know Young. "He and Paul Desmond really shaped my ears," says Chris. In addition to recordings and performances over the years with their illustrious father, Chris and Dan have recorded together with pianist Andy LaVerne (for Blackhawk); made two albums with brother Darius featuring Larry Coryell; and pursued their own very different individual paths. Chris, a self-taught arranger and composer, has had compositions commissioned and performed by orchestras around the world, including the Boston Pops, Baltimore Symphony, and Czech National Symphony Orchestra; he also tours and records with the blues-roots group Triple Play. Dan's résumé includes work with Coryell, Roy Buchanan, the Band, and the Dolphins, a group he co-founded with Mike DeMicco. Mike and Chuck Lamb first played together 30 years ago in Chuck's fusion group, Dry Jack. The intertwining pasts of the BBQ have helped them to forge a unique musical bond. The Brubeck Brothers Quartet is touring this summer in support of LifeTimes, with shows scheduled as follows: 7/24 Gate House Cafe, Southbury, CT; 7/26 View Arts Center, Old Forge, NY; 7/27 Infinity Hall, Norfolk, CT; 7/28 Summer Arts Festival, Huntington, NY; 7/29 Oswego (NY) Harborfest; 7/31 Machias Bay Chamber Concerts, Machias, ME; 8/1 Strand Theater, Rockland, ME; 8/2 Rockport (ME) Opera House (second half of concert: BBQ will perform Chris's Vignettes for Nonet with the Bay Chamber Concerts woodwind quintet); 8/25 Vancouver (WA) Wine & Jazz Festival; and 10/5 Fredfest, Fredericksburg, VA. (Photo of Chris and Dan by Stephane Colbert.) On 9/12, the Quartet will embark on a two-week tour of Russia, co-sponsored by the U.S. State Department. The group will be performing by themselves as well as with the Russian National Orchestra (at Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow) and with various guest artists including saxophonist Igor Butman, flutist Maxim Rubstov, and trumpeter Vladislav Lavrik. At the Tchaikovsky Hall concert, on 9/17, the group will perform selected tunes with the Orchestra, and Chris Brubeck and Vladislav Lavrik will play Chris's trumpet and trombone concerto, From the Blues to Beyond. Other dates include: 9/14 Igor Butman Jazz Club, Moscow; 9/19 Town Hall concert, Efremov; 9/21 Music School concert, Samar; 9/22 Moscow Conservatory Great Hall; 9/25 Mariinsky Concert Hall, St. Petersburg. I've just finished watching the video of the Argos-Stampeders game, and it was an excellent experience. My internet connection is faster than it was last year, and I can stream video without a problem now. I recommend it. The videos of the games are put up on the TSN website immediately upon the conclusion to the game. Go to the TSN website here: http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/ Scroll down midway through the page until you see the VOD Archives link. VOD stands for Video of the Day. Clicking on that link will take you to their library. You will then see a list of games available, which I think will be all of the games since the beginning of the season. If you don't want to watch the entire game, you will notice that to the right of the list of games available you will see (once you have clicked on a game) the four quarters of the game. So you can watch any or all quarters as you choose. As I recall, last year you had to watch the entire game. This situation is much better because there are always lots of games where watching the fourth quarter would be fun even though you already know who has won. In fact, that is my only objection to the process: In order to first click on the VOD archive link, you must first see the news report of who won the game. You might try this link to avoid the website's front page, but I'm not sure how long it will last. http://watch.tsn.ca/cfl-games-on-demand/#clip718395
