  1. ss1, are you too young to remember Dick Tracy's two-way wrist radio?
  2. aloc, I note that all but the first are Capitol records!
  3. Marty, it was part of the Shearing Mosaic box.
  4. Jim, I think your guesses are too obvious. My first thought was Pete Rose. If it is any of your choices, I don't think that Berrigan would have said that it is "a really good trivia question." But perhaps I'm reading too much into it!
  5. ss1, I saw Brett play in the 1973 American Association All-Star game in Omaha (along with Bucky Dent and Joel Come'on People Now Youngblood), so I assume that he was a rookie in '74.
  6. Tony Oliva?
  7. Toronto Argonauts 22....Calgary Stampeders 14 http://www.sportsnetwork.com/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=sportsnetwork&page=cfl/news/news.aspx?id=4522359 http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=403379 Defensive battle, with only field goals until the last play of the third quarter. Cory Boyd's replacement Chad Kackert had a good game.
  8. Montreal Alouettes 38....Edmonton Eskimos 25 http://www.sportsnetwork.com/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=sportsnetwork&page=cfl/news/news.aspx?id=4522215 http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=403325 Not an interesting game. Montreal led 28-0 in the second quarter, and then coasted. Edmonton outscored them 14-0 in the fourth to make the final score look more respectable than it should have.
  9. Happy Birthday 2012 Laurie! Love the new Osaka release!
  10. Definately. (why do about 40% of people think that's how you spell definitely?--actually, based on a Google comparison it's only about 10%) Maybe it's the sequence, but I can't figure out what you're responding to.
  11. Winnipeg Blue Bombers 32....Hamilton Tiger-Cats 25 http://www.sportsnetwork.com/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=sportsnetwork&page=cfl/news/news.aspx?id=4521999 http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=403242 Crazy game. In the second the Ticats had a 14-4 lead. The Bombers then went on to outscore them 21-3. Then the Ticats tied it. Late in the game the Bombers scored a TD to take the lead. With one minute to go at mid-field on third and one, Burris threw a bad pass instead of running the ball. That effectively ended the game. Chris Williams ran another punt back for a TD, his fourth of the year.
  12. Pete, I think that they are thinking of "separately".
  13. Years ago ads on late night television offered videos of sports bloopers. It promised one guy who had a problem with the phrase "World Cup soccer".
  14. Here's an article about the financial problems of the UFL that you might find interesting. When the UFL started, the Canadian press as usual said that the sky was falling, and that the CFL would have trouble competing with it. http://freebeacon.com/pelosis/
  15. Ron Nelson was one of the two Highway Patrol officers who responded to the James Dean wreck. Contrary to popular belief, Nelson felt that Dean was going only 55 mph. http://www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-me-passings-20120816,0,4350724.story

  17. Peggy Fleming?
  18. Yes, Hans, I plan to get a region-free dvd player for Christmas.
  19. Not to start an argument, but I think that pole vaulting was more impressive when the poles didn't bend. It looked like it took real strength to haul yourself over the bar rather than to hang on for the ride!
  20. That's good to know, Jetman and ejp. The dvd is out of print and not available from Amazon, so I had to buy from a Marketplace Seller. Too bad for me. It's also good to know that even though Amazon knows that I am in the US, the price it is showing me includes the VAT. I gather that it will be adjusted at checkout, is that correct?
  21. I just placed an order with Amazon UK. Here's the bad news. I ordered from a Marketplace Seller a dvd listed at 9.99 GBP. The shipping was 3.0x, so the total was about 13.00 GBP. I used Amazon's currency converter, and I was charged $21.28. Do you think that Amazon UK knows that I am in the US when I browse, and lists all of their prices to me without the VAT, so that there would be no reduction? Do you think that if I ordered a number of things, the percentage of the bill devoted to shipping would be much less?

  23. Once every THREE weeks!!!!............Your hair must grow quickly... Nope, back in the day all of us were required to get a haircut that often! Once I was sternly warned by my geometry teacher to go to the barber pronto!
  24. Remember Sgt. Rock and Easy Company, with Ice Cream Soldier and all the rest? Their creator Joe Kubert has died. I used to read Sgt. Rock comics once every three weeks in the barber shop. http://www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-me-joe-kubert-20120815,0,7834486.story
  25. I've pieced together a couple of concepts the past two days. When I did my research last year, it all appeared to be somewhat sub-rosa. But when I googled "region free dvd" the other day, I saw an ad for Amazon. I clicked on it, and sure enough Amazon is carrying them.. The least expensive is this Sony for $41.06. http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Ultra-Compact-Multi-region-Supports-Included/dp/B0080H77PQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1345010785&sr=8-1&keywords=region-free+dvd You will note that for $41.90 with free shipping Amazon is fulfilling the item. The comments for that Sony indicate that it comes with a Spanish language User's Manual, and that Sony will promptly send you one in English upon request. The US and Canada are Region 1. The UK and Europe are Region 2. Mexico and all of Latin America are Region 4. Here's my guess: The demand for region free players is not coming from Americans who wish to purchase British discs. It's coming from Mexicans in the US who wish to watch their Region 4 Spanish language discs. By the way, the link in post #2 says that the region concept was devised so that the wealthy nations could not purchase discs whose prices are lower in poorer countries. That may well be true, but that's not what I've read in the past. What I've read is that movies do not open worldwide at the same time; and the studios do not want the dvd to be available in a market before its theatre run has run its course.
