  1. Alexander, for pipe tobacco I recommend Mark Ryan at D&R Tobacco, who is a friend of mine. He was the leading independent maker of roll-your-own cigarette tobaccos until the recent change in the law forced him to switch the way his blends are cut from cigarette to pipe tobacco. I currently enjoy Picayune, but it is probably too strong for a beginner. You might like Vengeur. Give them a call and Patsy can make a recommendation. Here is their website: http://www.smoke-n-chew.com/
  2. Montreal Alouettes 33....Winnipeg Blue Bombers 14 http://64.246.64.33/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=s...aspx?id=4255254 Pretty boring. The Bombers scored first with a TD, and after that it was all Alouettes. ***** Immediately after the game, the Bombers traded Romby Bryant and Arjei Franklin to the Stampeders. http://64.246.64.33/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=s...aspx?id=4255294 ***** Edmonton Eskimos 31....Saskatchewan Roughriders 27 http://64.246.64.33/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=s...aspx?id=4255323 Great game! The Eskimos slowly scored a TD on all three of their first half possessions, but the Riders fought back to take the lead. History was made when Omarr Morgan set a league record for a fumble return to score a TD. At the time, the announcers said it was 106 yards, but later they said 105. I see that the above link lists it as 108. The Eskimos scored the winning TD with 1:09 left to go in the game on a 68 yard pass from Ray to Maurice Mann. The Riders moved all the way down the field in the final minute. On the last play of the game from the 17, the pass fell incomplete in the end zone.
  3. I'm so sorry I don't meet your high standards, Larry.
  4. Jan Garbarek has a new 2 CD album coming out called Dresden. It was recorded live in concert there. I've listened to the first CD a number of times. It has an early 70s feel. I've tried to like Garbarek over the years, but generally found what I have heard to be uninteresting. In that light, I find Dresden to be the most interesting thing of his that I've heard yet. It's not the best album ECM has put out this year, but it's good enough to be in my rotation for a while.
  5. We had a thread on Quartet San Francisco's last album here. http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...mp;hl=Francisco It was nominated for a Grammy. Apparently it didn't win, because I expect the thread would have mentioned it if it had. I see that lala.com now has it available for listening. http://www.lala.com/#album/2810527642572314527 Well the group has a new album out that I like much, much more than the last one. This one is called QSF Plays Brubeck. QSF is a string quartet playing chamber music. This new Brubeck album is not jazz. It is a classical group playing jazz standards! Many of the songs are from Time Out, and I was unfamiliar with only one or two of the 12 songs. If the idea of jazz standards played by a string quartet appeals to you, check this out! Unfortunately, lala.com does not yet have this one up to listen to.
  6. Bobby Broom's drummer Kobie Watkins released an album a few months ago called Involved. It has been getting some airplay on Sirius. I've been enjoying it for the past six weeks. It's nothing special, just real good mainstream jazz. There are 10 songs recorded on three dates with different personnel, so the album doesn't sound unified. Broom makes an appearance, and I like his work here more than on his own albums that I've heard. I recommend that you go over to lala.com and hear for yourself. As happens from time to time, this is another one of those albums where I think that the first song is the worst, so I usually skip over it. http://www.lala.com/#album/1657606138420814570
  7. British Columbia Lions 23....Toronto Argonauts 17 http://64.246.64.33/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=s...aspx?id=4255139 Strange game, but good. The Argos O showed absolutely nothing. The Lions took a 14-0 lead when it should have been more like double that. The Argos then scored 17 straight to take the lead, but the Lions came back, dominating the entire game although trailing for a while in the third. Wally set the record for coaching wins.
  8. Hamilton Tiger-Cats 24....Calgary Stampeders 17 http://64.246.64.33/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=s...aspx?id=4254809 Solid game. The Stamps got off to a quick 14-0 lead due to Ticat mistakes. But the Hamilton D shut down the Calgary O, and the Ticats were slowly able to get back in the game and pull it out.
  9. Shorty Rogers is spoken for, pending payment.
  10. Stan Getz (and Charlie Byrd) became household names with Jazz Samba, which was a few years later. I think that would trump Concert by the Sea, don't you?
  11. David Naylor Week 12 preview http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/week...article1292170/ Gregg Xenakes Week 12 preview http://64.246.64.33/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=s...aspx?id=4254442 ***** Jarious Jackson is out 3-5 weeks with a rotator cuff injury, so Buck Pierce will start for the Lions this week. http://64.246.64.33/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=s...aspx?id=4254609 ***** Barrin Simpson has objected to being placed on the 9-game injured list. The issue isn't settled. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/foot...article1290312/
  12. I was never a fan of Peter, Paul and Mary. Many of their songs were way too political for me, and Puff the Magic Dragon was over the top treacly. But they were much bigger stars than many of those we've honored here, so I thought I would provide the link to her LA Times obituary. http://www.latimes.com/news/la-me-mary-tra...0,1224459.story
  13. Thanks for catching that, Bol! I've made the appropriate correction. My box says "MR6" on it, so I suppose that the set was a 6-LP set whose box I was sent by mistake. Hey! Maybe that makes it even more of a collector's item!
  14. Over time, I have become used to the rhythms, and they don't bother me anymore. I like it! I see that you can now listen to this for free at lala.com. http://www.lala.com/#album/1657606138386464609
  15. Perhaps with the "Bad News from Mosaic" thread reaching 24 pages, today would be a good day to bump this thread, and remind everyone of what is available.
  16. The Bombers were unable to find any takers for Barrin Simpson, so they have put him on the 9 game injured list, which puts him out of action through the end of the regular season. They were obligated to pay his salary anyway, even if they released him. This allows them to retain his rights. And since he is on the injured list, his salary will not count against the cap. Makes you wonder how injured he is, doesn't it? http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/CFL/Win...0882076-cp.html
  17. Happy Birthday 2009 gslade!
  18. Happy Birthday Dan!
  19. Montreal Alouettes 28....British Columbia Lions 24 http://64.246.64.33/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=s...aspx?id=4253789 Average game with exciting fourth quarter. The Lions had the lead late in the game, but couldn't hang on. ***** Saskatchewan Roughriders 55....Winnipeg Blue Bombers 10 http://64.246.64.33/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=s...aspx?id=4253856 Good first quarter, tied at 7 at its end. But after that it was all Riders. I think I heard the announcer say that the Rider record for points scored is 58.
  20. Jeff Garcia is back with the Eagles! I suppose it's too much to hope that he can be even half as magical again. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/foot...article1287474/
  21. Happy Birthday Vibes, wherever you are!
  22. I lost all interest in tennis during the days of Nastase and McEnroe. I haven't seen today's incident, but in general I'm glad they put the hammer down on poor sportsmanship. It's nearly forty years too late IMO.
  23. The league has admitted that the call that took away the Als' TD against the Lions was a bad call, and it has proposed three rule changes for the refs to ensure that it won't happen again. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/foot...article1284823/ ***** Toronto Argonauts 25....Hamilton Tiger-Cats 22 http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/405-...article1285220/ Defensive struggle that went into overtime. The score was tied at 19 at the end of regulation. This was the Argos' first win at home since August 1 of last year - 405 days! Quinton Porter went in and out a few times, but Kevin Glenn played most of the game. Arland Bruce scored a TD. Everybody was wondering what he would do for a TD celebration, but he didn't do anything. It was Cody Pickett's first win as a starter in the CFL or NFL. Nick Setta had a convert blocked. How often does that happen? ***** Calgary Stampeders 35....Edmonton Eskimos 34 http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/foot...article1285295/ Terrific game! The Eskimos were slightly better all game long, but Jermaine Copeland caught the winning TD with 22 seconds left. PS - Copeland is a winner. He won the national championship with Tennessee. He won the XFL championship with Los Angeles. And he has won the Grey Cup with both Montreal and Calgary.
  24. Happy Birthday tpt1!
  25. It looks like Barrin Simpson is through with the Bombers. He has had enough of Mike Kelly and his staff. They have given him permission to shop himself around, and he won't be on the roster this week. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/foot...article1283079/ ***** Even though they are tied for first place in the West, the Eskimos' performance was so dismal Monday that they have fired their offensive coordinator Rick Worman. http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/CFL/Edm...818476-sun.html ***** In a big surprise to me, the Eskimos have released Kitwana Jones. http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/CFL/Edm...804796-sun.html (edit:) But he wasn't out of work long! The Riders have picked him up. http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/CFL/Sas...818486-sun.html ***** The Bombers put Stephan LeFors on the nine game injured list, which means that he is through for the season. He has a problem with his right (non-throwing) shoulder. http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/CFL/Win...824386-sun.html ***** Gregg Xenakes Week 11 preview http://www.sportsnetwork.com/merge/tsnform.../AJN4252930.htm ***** Globe (David Naylor?) Week 11 preview http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/foot...article1283147/
