  1. Here is a list of lending libraries. That's right, libraries which lend eBooks either for free or for a small fee! http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/EBook_Lending_Libraries
  2. It was until I found this group in '03 that I learned that fans wait till the last minute to buy a Mosaic. Prior to that, in my solitude, I would buy a set when it first came out (or I first heard of it) or never, and figured that's what most people did.
  3. I'm here mostly to learn about jazz, and that includes where the bargains can be found on the internet! The comraderie is great, but I suppose there are a lot of boards with that. I'm not aware of a board that is more informative about jazz. And I also enjoy reading the comments of those good looking guys on the Canadian league thread!
  4. I've listened to this one quite a number of times over the past two weeks, and I'm really enjoying it - much more than when I first got it.
  5. The two Labor Day "classics" were the two most boring games of the year! Hamilton Tiger-Cats 34....Toronto Argonauts 15 http://64.246.64.33/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=s...aspx?id=4252514 The Ticats dominated throughout, but shot themselves in the foot near the endzone so often that the Argos were at least in theory still in the game till the end of the third quarter. Kevin Glenn started again for the Ticats, and had another good game. ***** Calgary Stampeders 32....Edmonton Eskimos 8 http://64.246.64.33/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=s...aspx?id=4252547 The Eskimos were never in it. Henry Burris set the Stamps' team record for passes thrown (career), and passed Tom Burgess for 11th place on the league's career passing yardage list.
  6. I smoke cigars. I was in the business for a while. Let me make a couple of recommendations. It's all a matter of taste, not science. Disregard people who think that their opinion is dogma. Disregard people who think that every Cuban cigar is better than every non-Cuban cigar. That's like saying that every French wine is better than every wine from somewhere else. Since the cigar boom of ten years ago, many cigar smokers are the kind of people who judge something by its price tag. Disregard them. Many old Cuban brand names are used in the US with non-Cuban cigars, so don't be confused. I can't think of any such US cigars that are of the highest quality (to my taste). One of my favorites is made in Miami - La Tradicion Cubana, by a guy named Louis Sanchez. If you are ever on Calle Ocho in Little Havana, look him up. He used to have a website to place orders. Probably still does, I haven't checked in a long time. Another favorite of mine down the block from Lou's was La Luna Cigars by a guy named Gael de Courtivran. I'm not sure that he is still in business. A third Miami manufacturer that is still going strong is El Titan de Bronze. I liked some of theirs, and didn't care much for others. Finally, there is a Honduran brand called Puros Indios which has its US headquarters in Miami. I visited their factory in Honduras in 2000. I loved them, but again, it's been a while since I had one, and the best cigars change over time depending on what leaf is available. In regard to Cuban cigars, my favorite is the Bolivar. The most popular (and I think the most expensive) is the Montecristo No. 2, but I never cared for it. By the way, everywhere in the world, the primary component of the price of a cigar is the tax.
  7. Here's an article about the controversy. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/foot...article1278247/ Dave Naylor misstates the score. The Lions did not score the winning TD after the incident. They were already leading with what turned out to be the final score.
  8. If it's' not too late to weigh in... First I opened up Disc 1. It was good, but I had much of it already, so it wasn't fresh like the thrill of a new album. Two weeks later I opened up Disc 3. It was very good, but Laurie set the bar so high with her previous three Widow's Taste releases that I didn't think that it measured up to them. That's not a criticism, just a comment that if you've already got the other three you've been spoiled! This weekend I finally got around to opening up Disc 2. Wow! I think that it alone is worth the $20 price of the set. I've read often how Art was so influenced by Coltrane in the 60s, but I hadn't heard any examples of that before. I've been playing Disc 2 all weekend, and I'm sure I'll keep playing it a lot. Laurie commented above that the purpose of this release was to introduce the phases of Art's career to those who are not familiar with him. I think she's done a great job of that.
  9. Just the other day I heard a commentator on Sirius say that he expected Russell to do so poorly that he expected Jeff Garcia to be the starter in October. The guy is 39, so maybe no one will pick him up, but I don't think he's done if anyone wants to use him. That run he had with the Eagles a few years ago was one for the books!
  10. Saskatchewan Roughriders 29....Winnipeg Blue Bombers 14 http://64.246.64.33/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=s...aspx?id=4252329 The Riders dominated throughout. At one point in the third the Bombers closed to within four, but that didn't last long.
  11. You missed one. One of the fabulous things about the ipod (I never can recall where the capital goes!) is the shuffle facility; not sure if this would have much application for reading books except, perhaps, it might make sense of Finnegans Wake. Bev, it looks like you need to practice your reading!
  12. Thanks for your input medjuck! That's just the sort of thing I was asking for when I started the thread.
  13. British Columbia Lions 19....Montreal Alouettes 12 http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/foot...article1277332/ http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform..../final/W779.htm Pretty much a defensive battle, although Martell Mallett rushed for a Lions team record 213 yards. Considering how awful the Lions D was last game against the Bombers' rushing, it's amazing that they were able to stop the Als. Wally Buono grew up in Montreal and played for the Als. Last night he tied Don Matthews for most regular season (231) and total (including post-season) (250) coaching victories, and he has the chance to set the new record next week against his old team in the rematch in Montreal. ***** edit: I forgot to mention that the game ended under very questionable circumstances. Montreal had the ball near the goal line, third down and a yard. They make it but Wally had called a time out. So they do it again, and this time they score the touchdown. But the ref disallows the play and says that the scoreboard clock needed to be reset. So they do it a third time. The ref spots the ball two inches short of a first down.
  14. Happy Birthday Sidewinder! Which Mosaic will you play in celebration today?
  15. It's halftime at the Als-Lions game. BC is leading 10-7 in something of a surprise. The Als are the best team in the league, and the Lions have been struggling. But the Als haven't won in Vancouver since 2000! http://www.cjad.com/
  16. Big news! Amazon is returning 1984 to its customers along with the notes they took. Or they can choose $30 instead. http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=55571
  17. David Naylor "Labour" Day Weekend preview http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/labo...article1275550/ Gregg Xenakes Labour Day Weekend preview http://64.246.64.33/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=s...aspx?id=4251426
  18. Bombers update: Apparently Immigration Canada wasn't sure it wanted to let Pacman into the country. Charles Rogers is currently under suspension by the NFL, so as long as that lasts he is ineligible to play in the CFL. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/blue...article1273887/
  19. Are the record labels jazz record labels anymore? Last week when I voted in the Downbeat Readers Poll, I didn't think there was much competition for Label of the Year. Other than ECM and EmArcy, I'm not aware of anyone doing anything. And now that I think about it, EmArcy is a Universal label, and I think that ECM's US headquarters are in the Universal offices.
  20. Let the discounting begin!
  21. It's time to get ready for bed here. I'm unwinding to Groovadelphia.
  22. The Eskimos have cut Jonte Buhl, and brought Mike Maurer back out of retirement. http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/CFL/Edm...2/10725916.html http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/CFL/Edm...725941-sun.html
  23. The Bombers have decided not to sign Pacman Jones after all. He apparently thought that he would be free to jump to the NFL whenever he wanted. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/blue...article1273887/
  24. Looking like you're not going to make the playoffs can make you desperate. Now the Bombers are planning to sign Charles Roberts too. Here's an article about Pacman and Roberts. It mentions that Roberts, only 25, is the father of seven children! How did he find the time to get into trouble? http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/blue...article1272879/
  25. It looks like the Bombers will sign Adam (Pacman) Jones. He's going to go stir-crazy in Winnipeg! I'm surprised that he is only 25 years old. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/pacm...article1271577/ http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/CFL/Win...709016-sun.html ***** The Riders have signed Jason Armstead (again!). http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/CFL/Sas...0706006-cp.html ***** Here's an article about the Eskimos getting their first INT of the year, as I mentioned the other day. http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/CFL/Edm...676066-sun.html
