  1. Yeah, I was talking about that with someone this morning.
  2. Recognize the loop on "Nazareth Savage" yet? The female vocal "ooohs" and "aaahs"? Hint: Also used on the Beastie Boys' "Professor Booty", only they just clipped the opening drum break.
  3. Dude, they never claimed the BMT was low in fat. It's got all kinds of sausagey meats in it. Not much room to wiggle there. Even without the mayo/cheese/etc it'd still be fattening. If you go for a veggie, turkey, or roast beef (without mayo or pickles) you'll be in pretty good shape, even with the cheese. Needles to say, I do this relatively often. B-)
  4. Man, I really wish I hadn't sold my deepgroove LP copy of that... BTW: no kidding re Leapin' and Loapin'. Great set!!
  5. The last three Nas LPs (Stillmatic, God's Son, and this one) were all supposed to be "the one where he takes it back." But we keep sayin this and it never really happens. Believe me, no one wants this record to be good more than me. When Mr. Jones it at the top of his game he's one of the all-time greats. Period. He's just so inconsistent, that's all. You never know what you're gonna get from record to record...which is to say nothing for song to song! I'll probably buy this on iTunes when I get home. I don't care about CD artwork. I just want it on headphones. If it turns out I like it enough, I'll buy it on wax. I'm also going to make a HipHopSite.com purchase as well. The new EDO. G & Pete Rock LP as well as some weird 2xCD set of Pete Rock mixing his favorite funk, soul, and jazz tracks. I dunno what that last one is but it's sure to go OOP sooner than later. I'm getting while I have the chance. B-)
  6. I'm glad you reminded me about that game tonight. I'll have it on for sure. KU again with the smack last night. Like you said about State's opponents so far, Nevada wasn't exactly an upper echelon team but the performance was impressive either way. Freshmen looked particularly good. Too bad we don't play you guys again this year. That'd be good...
  7. I know. I'm with you. Nas (like so many others) is really only as good as the beat he's rhyming over. This, by the way, is yet more proof of my theory that a weak rhyme over a dope loop beats a dope rhyme over a weak loop any day of the week. (Example: the Primo-produced "Living Proof" 12-inch by Group Home. It's not everyday that you run across a jam that half-assed in the vox department that's still considered a classic.) Couldn't tell you who did the beats on Street's Disciple. I'm sure some cursory Google searching would do the trick pretty quickly however. And yeah, and entire LP produced by Premier would be absolutely out of hand. The only thing better than that would be a reunion of the original production team (Primo, Large Professor, Pete Rock, and Q-Tip).
  8. Just heard that De La Soul yesterday. Really good. Best one since Stakes is High for sure. Ghostface kills it on "He Comes."
  9. Now that's a work of art. I still say that some of those are vocabulary issues, and not spelling. Those are what bother me the most. Public enemy number one is the misuse of "literally". (Example: "I'm serious, this guy was literally eleven feet tall!") Er......no.
  10. "Gravity Point" is listed as 5:10 (not 6:10) on my Liberty/UA BST 84339 copy.
  11. Business as usual, I guess... EDIT: Wait...I did spell "business" correctly, right? Okay. Good.
  12. I watched the first two episodes when it started and didn't really get it but really began to dig it this season. So I guess I need to go back and watch the first season as well. Very funny and very strange program. Thank god we've got Jefferey Tambor back on TV. I've missed him sorely since Larry Sanders went off the air. An absolute comic genius...
  13. I'm sure I've been guilty of this and many other spelling attrocities on this board. I'm much more of a grammar nerd than I am a spelling nerd. Spelling is boring. My theory is that spelling is not unlike phone numbers. They're both well documented so why bother memorizing them? Espeicially for a post on a message board. C'mon man...
  14. Silva plays violin on Luna Surface (Actuel #12) as well.
  15. C'mon man... On the Beach belongs on one of those lists.
  16. Very, very noisy. Doyle's playing is so out that it borders on outsider. Haven't really sat down and listened to it in a couple of years, though.
  17. Get it.
  18. Thumbing through the Szwed book just now I answered my own question.
  19. It's not that weird actually. Come on, guys. You need to realize that the rest of the world didn't study jazz performance and couldn't care less what the original intention of the record was. I certainly don't. A good handful of those Abersold records are very popular among hip hop circles. They have been for many years. Why? Because (1) some of them have fantastic funk beats, (2) there aren't any horns to get in the way of the rhythm section, and (3) DJs have the option of switching between channels (i.e. switching instrumentation) on the fly. I almost always play the first track from Nothin' But Blues, Vol. 2 when I play out, albeit at an accelerated speed. Something like +6 or +7. Plus, if I switch the output to mono on my mixer then I can pan back and forth between each channel and basically create my own dub. This works especially well if I have my Memory Man delay effect hooked up as well. On this particular track, "Mr. Super Hip," the bass is isolated in the left channel, keys on the right, and the drums in both. So there's quite a bit to work with. That's why those LPs are so attractive to folks who play mid-tempo soul jazz/funk DJ sets--which is to say nothing for hip hop producers!
  20. So I shoud assume then that Tom Wilson's "supervision" credit on The Futuristic Sounds of Sun Ra means that he served as producer and not Dixon? I guess I was always under the impression that the Ra date was one of Dixon's but it's looking like he (Dixon) wasn't making decisions like that until about 1963, two years after The Futuristic Sounds. Thanks guys, Brandon
  21. It's available now... [CD Universe]
