Interesting. I didn't know about those. Too bad I already have the CDs (all of which are brilliant)......

I spend about $30 on music a month.

I'm a huge fan but I have harder time with the solo material. It's a little closer to the mid-80's stuff with Mayo Thomson (of Red Krayola). Of course, it shouldn't be surprising that anyone would make weird records with Mayo Thompson on board. Anyways, if you don't have them, go with the essentials first: The Modern Dance (1978) - A classic by any standard. Terminal Tower (1975-80) - Compilation of early singles featuring, among other things, "30 Seconds Over Tokyo" and "Heart of Darkness". Dub Housing (1979) - Their second full length and my favorite one by a long shot. The first three tracks are worth the price of admission by themselves. Lastly, when that box set comes in be sure to check out his accapella cover of "Sloop John B". Very very strange.....

So I was in a hurry this morning and forgot to tape the Royals season opener against the Chi-Sox. (Good thing about the match-up, right; seeing as everybody gets WGN.) Had a hectic day and suddenly remembered about the game at about 4:45. I rushed over to a workstation and got on MLB.com just in time to see Beltran hit the bottom-of-the-9th game winning dinger. Amazing!

Most bizzare band names of all time.

There's also a band (from Ohio, I believe) called the Giggling Faggots. They get name-checked in the Guided By Voices song "Hit". -
Look what's coming out in June.....

The night that Sonic Youth is currating at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival includes a couple of winners: Double Leopards and (my fave) Tan as Fuck. And, to your point Jim, I once wanted to name a band Avant-Garde Childcare. I mean if there's anything that you don't want to be avant-garde.... -
Tell Us Your Cell Phone Ring Tone

Same here. I see no reason to bother other people when my phone rings. Ringing cell phones are actually a pet-peeve of mine... No shit. -
'THE OFFICE' (season two)
Brandon Burke replied to Brandon Burke's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I'm now officially watching the second half of the X-Mas special for the fifth time. Absolutely brilliant. I couldn't imagine a better ending to the series.... -
I must say that I'm very pleased with both the Roach and the Dorham. This is my first time really sitting down and hearing either one. Great scores indeed.

The haul (all LPs): * Horace Parlan Happy Frame of Mind * Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage * Kenny Dorham - Trompeta Toccata * Max Roach - Trio featiring the Legendary Hasaan * John Fahey - Vol 6: Days Have Gone By I forgot that I already had the Parlan as part of the Booker Ervin 2-fer. The Roach/Hasaan is a white label. And the Fahey was all of $6 because the guy who was selling it thought it was a jazz record.

I skipped the last two but I got a free pass from someone (and a little spare change) so I figure I'll at least check it out. I'll be there most of the afternoon Saturday so, if you make it down, give me a call and we can meet up. Here's the official website. Brandon EDIT: Seeign as Organissimo appears on Google, I'm taking my phone number off now that I'm back home.

Any of you guys hear Kurious A Constipated Monkey? I have the "I'm Kurious" 12" but have been reluctant to pull the trigger on the full-length because it always goes for a pretty decent amount of money. I heard one other track from it that I can't recal by name, it's been a while, but if I remember right the beat featured sleigh bells. And, let's be honest, you pretty much can't lose with sleigh bells. -
It seems like a crime to leave out the takes leading up to the master of "Un Poco Loco".

Just scored a copy of the Main Source 'Just Hangin Out' 12". I've wanted that stupid thing for ages and actually find the remix at least equal, if not altogether better, than the original. Can it be that it was all so simple then..... -
Anyone Doing Production w/ Roxio's Toast With Jam?
Brandon Burke replied to RonF's topic in Audio Talk
Alright, I figured it out. The Roxio guy was full of shit. Jam does not perform this function on its own. Here's what actually needs to happen..... 1. Import the file into a third-party editing application (apparently only Sound Designer or Peak). 2. Create regions while in SD/Peak. 3. Save the document in the "Jam Image" format in a designated file. 4. Lastly, open the "Jam Image" file in Jam. (You may also do this by simply dragging the file and dropping into Jam.) -
Anyone Doing Production w/ Roxio's Toast With Jam?
Brandon Burke replied to RonF's topic in Audio Talk
And we're back.......! So I'm trying to divide an otherwise lengthy track into separate tracks (in Roxio Jam) and I'm having difficulty figuring out how to do this. According to the tech guy on the phone (), all that I need to do is click along the timeline and insert track divisions like one would on, say, Final Cut Pro. The manual, however, says the following.... "An audio file can be parsed into several subsections called regions. Jam can import each region as a seperate track. For example, if you have large unified piece of music (such as a recording of a concert), but you don't want to record the entire piece as a single track on CD, you can separate it into regions, and import it into Jam with zero pause between tracks. Each region becomes a seperate track, but the whole CD will play seamlessly. Jam supports audio file regions in Sound Designer II or Jam Image as used by Peak." (Boldface type is mine.) So this kind of pisses me off. Roxio specifically said that I could separate tracks using Jam, but now it seems like I actualy need to separate them in Peak--and only Peak?!--first and then import them into Jam; thus, nullifying the reason why I bought Jam in the first place. Any ideas? -
Yes, all three are EMI subsidiaries. Angel handles classical and you can thank Manhattan for your late-80's Blue Notes as well as hit-machine Richard Marx.
-
I agree about "Ghosts" and I think most up-tempo Ornette would fall into this category as well. These pieces seem to emphasize the celebratory side of the blues. On an altogether different note, I'll suggest the version of "Ginza Samba" on Stan Getz with Cal Tjader.

You should both check out my buddy Dante's compilation Chains & Black Ehxaust. No track listing (of course). It's not beat-matched but I'm not really worried about that shit. All that beat-matching famous samples says to me is that whoever's doing it has way too much money. I'm sorry man, those dudes aren't "diggin" for the Bongo Band 45. Let's be honest here. They're buying that for at least $100 from a dealer. Kid Capri is one thing but these new dudes are something different. Back to Chains.... It's a comp of soul/rock tracks that I guarantee nobody had ever heard before this thing came out. Seriously rare shit. And track 10 is about the stupidest thing I've ever heard. I keep waiting for Rakim to start rhyming over it. Man, do I sound like an old crank....... -
Great record, man. I think I dropped $20 for a strong VG+ LP about five years ago and it was worth every penny.

What a good first instrument for a child?
Brandon Burke replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Musician's Forum
There's a pretty significant difference between playing a piano and a keyboard; namely the fact that a piano has "weighted" keys. My group is preparing to play shows around Austin soon and I'm having to get used to a keyboard because none of the venues we plan on playing have a piano. So I'm basically learning my parts all over again. I should also mention that many modern keybaords, like the one I'm using, are touch sensitive. I get the impression that there are between 4 and 5 levels of volume that you can achieve, in accordance with how hard you hit the keys themselves. This makes feel more more like a real piano, in that respect, but it doesn't change the fact that the keys feel light as a feather without weights. And I'm finding it very difficult to play with the same 'touch' as before. Espscially on the quiet numbers. -
