  1. Jorge Ben Samba Esquema Novo is as good as anything you'll find. Brilliant record.
  2. Every time this thread pops back up I think about how fun it would be to own this set. Problem is, my most recent tax form included an $14,500 total income in 2003. (I'm in grad school.) Also, I have about 85% of the material in this box on LP already so I can't justify the expense. Great stuff, though...
  3. Nice post, Jim. Greetings, good wishes, and congrats to the entire family. Brandon
  4. Hey all, Got the iBook today. I was under the impression that it would automatically pick up my ethernet connection (cable modem). As long as my setting is on "automatic" it should just pick it up, right?
  5. Ouch..... For someone in audio preservation, that's like fingernails on a chalkboard, man.
  6. I appreciate this info, guys. Thanks B.
  7. Forgot I even owned this thing until about 30 minutes ago (and it's doing a great job of keeping me awake while hammering out some late-night projects). Mostly early pre-ska material. You don't even have to like reggae to dig this. Highest recommendation.
  8. Not nearly as good as last time which, surprisingly, was last July. That one was amazing. Renewed vigor on Mark's part for sure. This time....not so much. Still glad I went.
  9. Well....it's SE or bust, fellas. I can't afford the other places I've seen. Also, all three of the women who live at this place are *mousey* library types, the likes of which one immediately thinks of when discussing NPR hosts. So I figure, y'know, they're living there. Also, the owner of the house said that her roomate keeps her bike on the front porch every night (without trouble) and I figure that if that's cool then, in the grand scheme of things, the place is too. I mean, when it comes down to brass tacks, anything that can be pawned can be pawned. I'm from Kansas City so I've seen some rough shit too (KC is way up there on the annual homicide list). If she can leave her bike out there then that says something to me. Also, my buddy who works at LC said this in response: "I'm assuming that this is 15th and Massachusetts SE. That's a pretty nice neighborhood. You'll be living on Capitol hill, which I think is a great place to live." So........
  10. I'll be working with Sam Brylawski. I was originally supposed to be working with Mark Roosa as well but his last week at LC is the week before I begin. As such, I'm going to show up a few days early so I can see Mark. I'll definately be getting ahold of you Bertrand. And thanks for the note. B.
  11. Another question: How would this situation differ if the place was at 15th SE and Mass. versus 15th NW? I'm assuming you were talking about NW Weizen, right? I'm going to call this woman in a second here to find out which side of town it is....
  12. That's a cool article, Clem. I was surpsized by its length. Must've been quite a chunk of the music section.....
  13. I agree that Kansas is both an underated and weird place. Hell, William Burroughs lived there for the last 25-or-so years of his life. Kansas, however, was a "free" state; thus the heated rivalry with Misourri which was a slave state at the time. The town you're thinking of is Topeka (which is very weird indeed).
  14. Listening to "Big New Prinz" (the only good song on I Am Curious Oranj) as I type. Very excited for tomorrow night. I just heard that Mark hurt his hip, having slipped on a patch of ice at some point in the last couple of months, so he's apparently been doing shows from behind a desk, not unlike Spalding Gray [R.I.P.]. How perfect is that.....?! Too bad the other Fall fans on this board have no idea what this thread is about, seeing as it's titled "Curious Black(-ah)". Oh well.....
  15. Good lord, indeed! That photo is insane. Personally, I like to think of him as being "this guy"... ....but who am I kidding. I'm seeing them tomorrow night, by the way.
  16. Looks like you don't have to be Pavement anymore if you want to make artwork ripped off of The Fall. Someone went to the trouble of creating a font based on the handwriting of Fall leader, Mark E. Smith. And, as it happens, it looks pretty accurate. The Mac version is currently down (damn!) but the PC one works. Check the guy's track record...... http://www.visi.com/fall/news/mesfont.html
  17. Going to the Austin Chronicle spring party then off to catch the last half of (our own) Johnny E at the Elephant Room. Tomorrow one of my favorite bands of all time, The Fall, is playing Austin.
  18. I just posted this elsewhere but.... * Mickey Mantle * Ted Williams * Henry Aaron * Hank Bauer * The entire 1980 KC Royals (AL champs) * The entire 1985 KC Royals (world champs) Lovin' the Brett reference! I'm from KC and a big time Royals fan. Let me tell you, if you grew up in Kansas City during the 70's/80's like I did, your baseball card rite of passage was your first Brett rookie. Plain and simple. Only then did the other kids in the neighborhood take you seriosuly. I remember mowing a lot of lawns for that as a kid. Boy are they stinkin' up the place so far this year. Yeesh.... [EDIT: I should mention that every one of those autographs, save for the Royals team balls, were done in the presence of the player.]
  19. Not jazz but..... * Mickey Mantle * Ted Williams * Henry Aaron * Hank Bauer * The entire 1980 Kansas City Royals (AL champs) * The entire 1985 Kansas City Royals (world champs) * Steve Largent (on the day he broke the single season reception/yards record)
  20. Congrats, Allan! I'm almost there myself. I finish my masters in August!
  21. Guys...... What about the Butthole Surfers? Makers of the weirdest record I've ever heard, Locust Abortion Technician. (Yes, it's even weirder than Trout Mask Replica.) I'll never forget where I was the first time I heard it. It's rather like losing your virginity. I was a changed man.....
  22. Continuing along the Chinese-Jamaican thing.....It's worth noting that one of the biggest early reggae producers was a Chinese-Jamaican named Leslie Kong. His most famous production was "The Isrealites" by Desmond Dekker, featured prominently in the film The Harder They Come. Here's the link..... King Kong Compilation
  23. Well, as it turns out, the friendly folks at University Cyclery (29th & N. Lamar) fixed it for free!. I went in there initially just to get an estimate. Something I could give to Cap Metro. The guy put my bike on the rack, started taking things apart, and just kept going. Several minuted later, he took it down and said "here you go". I asked what he wanted and he told me not to worry about it, "just look out for busses". Needless to say, I highly recommend this shop and will be making any and all bike related purchases there from now on.
  24. Ironically, Pink Floyd was good for only one record as well. When Syd left, they lost their *hunanity*. I mean, I'm sorry, but let's get real here. I don't mean to be a dick about it but they got really cold, really fast. Everything they did post-"Piper" is cold and detatched. I just can't do it. There's a zillion other psychedelic bands I'd rather listen to than that shit. Namely, the early Soft Machine...... As for that comment about the Wu-Tang Clan, I don't know where to begin with that.....
