  1. The imports though far fewer are still there at Tower W4, but they've been integrated with the other titles. For the std catalogs, go down to J&R, those are the best prices you will find at retail. For selection, the best jazz CD shopping in NYC is still Tower W4, followed by Tower W66 (fewer imports than W4), Virgin Union Square. Tower W4 and Virgin Union Sq have recently reduced their sq footage devoted to jazz bins. I would spend money at DMG and the JRC before I give money to any chain, though. Kim's on Astor Place may have a few good used titles, and of course Norman's (3rd Ave, around the corner from Kims) is great for recent OOPs.
  2. Good call on The Feelies. And many great 80s bar bands such as Scruffy the Cat never turned up on CD. Some of those records and EPs which evoke early to mid-80s nights at Maxwells are among my favorite vinyl treasures.
  3. Stewart Copeland, where is he now? Does he have a working band? I have two vinyl LPs of his that I recall playing a lot in the mid-80s.
  4. I finally took the plunge, sold my first goods on Ebay two weeks ago, both using Buy It Now, a crack-like e-substance used by many Ebayers to enhance their short-term pleasure. Mmmmmmmmm, buyiiitttnowwww. I got $145 for the Don Cherry Mosaic CD set, $295 for the Blakey CDs. These prices are, to me, insane. Vinyl I can understand, but CDs? I can't, though I admit to paying $90 for the Cherry and $175 for the Blakey back in the day (mid-2000). Can someone please find and post the link to that Ebay sale of an "ass-kicking" as in if you win the seller comes to your house for a good stomping. Remember that classic?
  5. I believe in this thread!! my faves: * Dylan - New Morning, and John Wesley Harding * GD - Mars Hotel * Townsend/Lane - Rough Mix * Boz Scaggs (s/t on Atlantic) * Fairport - Unhalfbricking * Stones - Black and Blue go vinyl
  6. I posted "Stan Getz Plays" for sale, it has Raney and Duke Jordan and it sounds terrific. I believe some or all of it is on the Mosaic set.
  7. Call or write to Mosaic. They know all about re-issue vinyl and who's doing what. They would also know what source tapes were licensed. I got some info from them two years ago about Impulse reissues, very helpful. And here's a rant, no extra charge: while you're at it, buy the best value in jazz today, the Mosaic LP box of Miles' 65-68 Quintet. Really, are you going to find anything as remotely satisfying as that music on that vinyl between now and your next $500 of music spending??? Unlikely.

  9. Sorry for this rant, I do love the record dearly, but the sound is a letdown. Where is Jaki Byard in Rudy's mix? I think Rudy just wasn't in touch w/ mid-60s ensemble jazz and musical dialog, and as a result it sounds more like an old time BN session, instead of a crackling quartet. I dealt away my TOCJ copy last yr. How does the JRVG remastering A/B vs. the Conn? Did Rudy do the Conn?
  10. Maybe standing at the bar at the Five Spot, within earshot of Miles and Mingus jeering the Coleman quartet. (More of a fly-on-the-wall wish). Lurking about the The Five Spot from early '57 til it closed the first time would've done it for me. B)
  11. I would love it if that Jimmy Lyons title were put to CD. Who owns this BYG material at this point?
  12. Nice deal on that Hancock, if indeed that is a 1st stereo pressing. Great session, maybe Freddie's best moments for me.
  13. 1) whole lotta love 2) jumpin' jack flash whole LPs: 3) live dead (turn it WAY up as st. stephen melts into the eleven) 4) john wesley harding (yes, it works, try it)
  14. I use (well, eat actually) a big bratwurst w/ lots of kraut and hot mustard, just before bed. Wife won't come near me for about 12 hrs after one of those babies....
  15. I'm down with Chuck, but I have to say I can't believe he doesn't use a moonrock needle. Makes everything else sound like $h!t!!
  16. Don Ellis on Columbia - let's get @ the Fillmore, Tears of Joy, and Autumn on CD finally. Seriously athletic big band, some psychedelia, awesome stuff.
  17. If you pass by Downtown Music to get to ("no refunds") J&R, you will have made a grievous error. DTM is a NYC classic. Shopping and browsing does not get any better, and Bruce and Manny are very friendly people. If you don't like the music, then strike up a chat with either of them, they would probably want to know what they could put on to make you happy and relaxed. Please, J&R is only necessary if the prices in your mall back home are too high. Take the opportunity in NYC to visit a real music store - DTM, Other Music, Norman's, Kim's, the jazz dept. at Tower or even Virgin.
  18. Eremite told me this week that Raphe Malik may have extra copies of Consequences. I am waiting to get his email address from them so I can follow up. How coincidental that I spent a few free hours this past wk looking for some Malik and Mateen discs too (all over NYC).
  19. Futterman's Moments, w/ a 33min track w/ Jimmy Lyons (and 3 trio tracks) is indeed around. I found it at Tower last week, expensive. I notice towerrecords.com has all three Futterman/Lyons listed, for a few bucks less than I paid. Also, the recording quality of Moments seems especially fine.
  20. I agree. Sound is mostly top notch, esp. the RivBea discs, Tufts concert lacks presence but is clear enough. High price is unfortunate, all but guarantees this set will be under-appreciated.
  21. Try Beauty Is a Rare Thing start to finish, then right into OC trio Golden Circle Stockholm expand (RVG edition) vol 1 and vol 2. I did that last yr on a 10+ hour round tripper, it was cool.
  22. Please anybody give me a heads up on whereabouts of a copy of Jump Up. thanks
  23. Sorry to see it go as an atmospheric-plus to that area of downtown, after oh 15+ yrs I am still finding it tough without the great Lone Star on W13th. That one killed me when it closed, and changed my nights out immediately. (I lived down the street.) I hope Tonic moves uptown a bit, they have what I like now, but what a dump.
