  1. Maybe Acoustic Sounds knows the mastering info for such a big ticket item. If the label is not boasting about the source material and an all-analog processing chain, I would be skeptical. If it turns out to be digital, ditch the idea and get the Miles 60s Quintet set from Mosaic. I think its a great use for less than $200 for vinyl, and you could hunt down one or two of the Coltrane Atlantics at a local vinyl shop.
  2. Excuse me, she is somebody's daughter!!! Hopefully not his, but who knows?
  3. Its been years since I listened to Om, but I listened to the original tracks of Kulu Se Mama drivin home tonight. I love the chanting, the moods, great sound. Listening to all the '65 Coltrane end-to-end must be something like riding a rocket up through the clouds. As I type this, I am listening to My Favorite Things from Newport '63 w/ some bass-y headphones that are filling in a low-end I thought was completely absent. So the sound tonight anyway is much better than I remembered (I had the Selflessness vinyl), but it does confirm my memory of a great live MFT.
  4. If anybody cares about live rock, go and hear the bands in which Warren Haynes is playing. When he gets it going and his band mates get up too, it is likely to be quite a good ride. The man is a superb entertainer.
  5. I can't remember who told me, probably not an authorized dealer but I recall he had experience w/ 3020s. The issue I think was the sealed nature of the volume, bass, treble and balance controls. I'll keep googling til I find something... thanks
  6. For the sake of enjoyment, I would avoid any vinyl set w/ a lot of alternate takes, particularly given the way in which Mosaic sequences material in recording chronological order. I don't know the content of the CT Mosaic set though.
  7. Before or after the Met, hang out in Central Park. Bring a frisbee. The zoo is very good. Try the carousel, and check out the vibe near the fountain on 72nd. Also walk the Ramble, it's mellow. A small cooler w/ drinks and sandwiches/treats from Zabar's is a good idea. There is usually some good free music at Rumsey Playfield starting later in the Spring (May).
  8. I've been told that I won't be able to get the thing clean and eliminate "knob-noise". It still sounds great except when adjusting volume and other settings. So I use it as a power amp, but I would like to once again use it as an integrated amp in a small setting. Has anybody conquered this problem? Is there a surface that is not naturally accessible on the 3020? thanks
  9. Their stuff stinks. Dylan Unplugged sounds like an MP-3. Vinyl reissues are one of the biggest areas of marketing abuse I know of in the music industry. If they are not talking about the source material and the chain of treatment, forget it. That is what you pay for.
  10. Since moving last summer, I have spent a lot of time listening to and looking at what I accumulated over the past few years, and I have been a net seller for about six months, some on the board, some on Ebay, even getting $4-5 per disc for the dregs at the Jazz Record Ctr. I can still sell for another two years and I won't have unloaded everything I would like. It feels great. Sell all the crap you don't listen to, never listened to, won't listen to very much, and you will be amazed at how low your purchasing appetite becomes. I did learn what I like most and what I get enthusiastic to maybe go hear live, and so I do spend more (now maybe $50-60/month) at the one store in NYC that caters to my tastes (Downtown). But I don't buy CDs anymore at Tower or J&R, where I used to lurk. My credit card statements look great. Invest your time selling, and you will learn a lot about your own tastes, and fill in the blanks about the value of your time and your money.
  11. Here's my problem. My turntable and phono pre-amp are 100 miles away from my iMac DV which I use to burn discs. What is an efficient (small, <$500) way to capture digitally from my analog system, tote it back to my apt in the city to work on it in Toast? Is there something simpler and smaller than a laptop or portable DAT to capture the music in full fidelity? thanks
  12. Price discovery: I bid my usual insane $40 for the scarce Jump Up, offer came back at $50 incl. mailing. I won't do it (I have heard it will be re-issued in '05), but I appreciate the chance, thanks Jon. Any McPhee's there?
  13. It's a great session, w/ Woody bonus. Anything this brassy though I need the more mellow TOCJ sound. Digital RVG is like razor blades to my ears.
  14. I have heard a distributor is making calls offering these to dealers, in new condition. A recent Ebay listing for the set mentioned that there was a problem with one of the discs. Anybody heard about such a defect? thx
  15. Many Bay Area Deadheads starting recording the band w/ VHS rigs in the mid-80s; they had some really sweet results in pre-digital days. What was it, the width of the tape?
  16. thanks everyone xxx Dorham - Whistle Stop xxx McLean - Demon's Dance xxx Henderson - Page One xxx Mobley - No Room for Squares xxx Morgan - City Lights xxx Silver - Song for My Father xxx Gordon - Gettin' Around xxx Morgan Leeway xxx hold/sold
  17. Does anybody know or can describe the trio record Tern w/ Louis Moholo and Keith Tippet on FMP? thx
  18. I am not an owner but I remember comparisons to the British pressings that they mirror, and particular sides really did sound incredible, esp. Revolver and SPLHCB. By far the best Beatles listening experience in my life, all through 1982-85. A close buddy w/ a good rig had one. If I could find a mint-minus copy from an original owner who I could interview, I might pay up for it.
  19. I like the Dead Kennedys and Jim Foetus. fictiously speaking, it would have to be The Tight Ends featuring Phil McCracken and Craven Moorhead
  20. See the NY Times this morning, statistical finding that file sharing is not driving down sales. That is in the future, since file sharing and CD burning will be more rampant once consumers have a real motivation to acquire a better product than the new one the cos. will try to cram up our asses. New-release pricing can't compete w/ Ebay and the used market. It may really be that simple. The fact that CDs do not (in practical terms) degrade w/ use was a large factor spurring adoption in the first place.
  21. Since most/all of the catalogs are in print, it seems worthwhile being aware of which vinyl LPs were mastered in analog. I was listening to the Lester Bowie 5th Power CD today in my car. It sounds really sharp, awful at the high end. Then I noticed it was recorded in '78, so I guess if I see the vinyl I'll be curious, it could well sound way better than the disc. But a lot of the SN/BS vinyl I see around might be digital, since the recording dates are many cases mid to late 80s. I was wondering if anybody else has checked into it or keeps a mental book on this. I know shrugs must, this is right up his alley. thx oh yeah: ** Buy more Soul Note and Black Saint and support a great jazz institution!!! **
  22. Right on Brad; how about the DeFranco Verve sides with Sonny? His name was worthy of the title of the Mosaic set. My favorite Blue Note record is Leapin' and Lopin, but they are all fine.
