Beatles Mobile Fidelity SL Lp box set
AmirBagachelles replied to porcy62's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
I am not an owner but I remember comparisons to the British pressings that they mirror, and particular sides really did sound incredible, esp. Revolver and SPLHCB. By far the best Beatles listening experience in my life, all through 1982-85. A close buddy w/ a good rig had one. If I could find a mint-minus copy from an original owner who I could interview, I might pay up for it. -
Most bizzare band names of all time.

I like the Dead Kennedys and Jim Foetus. fictiously speaking, it would have to be The Tight Ends featuring Phil McCracken and Craven Moorhead -
Blue Note to introduce copy-protected discs
AmirBagachelles replied to Swinging Swede's topic in Miscellaneous Music
See the NY Times this morning, statistical finding that file sharing is not driving down sales. That is in the future, since file sharing and CD burning will be more rampant once consumers have a real motivation to acquire a better product than the new one the cos. will try to cram up our asses. New-release pricing can't compete w/ Ebay and the used market. It may really be that simple. The fact that CDs do not (in practical terms) degrade w/ use was a large factor spurring adoption in the first place. -
Since most/all of the catalogs are in print, it seems worthwhile being aware of which vinyl LPs were mastered in analog. I was listening to the Lester Bowie 5th Power CD today in my car. It sounds really sharp, awful at the high end. Then I noticed it was recorded in '78, so I guess if I see the vinyl I'll be curious, it could well sound way better than the disc. But a lot of the SN/BS vinyl I see around might be digital, since the recording dates are many cases mid to late 80s. I was wondering if anybody else has checked into it or keeps a mental book on this. I know shrugs must, this is right up his alley. thx oh yeah: ** Buy more Soul Note and Black Saint and support a great jazz institution!!! **

Right on Brad; how about the DeFranco Verve sides with Sonny? His name was worthy of the title of the Mosaic set. My favorite Blue Note record is Leapin' and Lopin, but they are all fine.

I only know Meet the Mets. Did she ever record Deeeeee-Fense!! as well? thx

Blue Note to introduce copy-protected discs
AmirBagachelles replied to Swinging Swede's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I have suspected for a long time the major factor in weak primary CD sales is the used market, not file sharing. And who are among the biggest suppliers to the used market? Entertainment company employees!! 3 or 4 live on our block, you can see their discarded major label CD cartons out on the curb every week for trash pickup. Up they go every week to Holy Cow in Park Slope (recently closed), or Kim's or now even J&R to sell their new releases. Gotta be worth a $1000 or more on a typical W-2 (they each get a few or more comps each week), but such cake probably doesn't get reported by any of these hypocrites, or by the companies doling out the discs. I would never buy a new disc under that new proposed scheme. They would have to cut the price too because they are offering less functionality, or this could finally bring the antitrust folks down on such scummy vault-hording monopolists. Ridiculous. Another New Coke for our time. We should start a campaign to get the IRS to look at entertainment company comps. The stuff is valuable. -

Get your checkbook out and get back out there. You need to compensate yourself for your loss, and to get over the anger. -

The Who at the Garden, March of '76, only NYC appearance on that tour, and I don't think they had been in town for awhile. Outside, wall to wall people for 2-3 blocks, including the middle of 7th Ave, looking for tickets. -
Boston, and all the fake white boys who conspired w/ suits to earn gazillions and take over FM radio.

The TOCJ jewel case editions of Right Now, Let Freedom Ring, and Action are essential for Jackie Mac fans. The discs sound fantastic. Hot music.

This is one of my favorite jazz (vinyl) records. For some reason I rarely get excited over Horace Silver's music, too tame for me. But Woody and Joe, there you go!!! Sincerely hoping to see some of you selling your TOCJ editions soon, now that you have that "great" RVG digital re"mastering"....

Ah yes down in "the stalls". Saw the Dead there, 4 nights in March of '81. That first night, a midweek show, there could not have been more than 400-500 people in there, rare (musty) jokes and banter from the stage. By the last night, the word was around, and the place filled up. It must have been the doses. Spring '81 Dead was pretty good, I say.

Good San Francisco area record shops?
AmirBagachelles replied to Hank's topic in Miscellaneous Music
And if its vinyl, you gotta go see the Record Man in Redwood City. You gotta see the place. More fun to spend $ up at Groove Yard though. -

my fave is Groove Yard in Oakland, great prices on vinyl. Take your time, there are always good finds in there. Rick Ballard the owner is friendly and very knowledgeable. I love going there. They are right off Rt. 24 on Telegraph in the high 40s. -
Drivin' That Train: for me, the '68-'70 live Dead was DA BOMB. Powerful, dynamic electric improv, subtlety, and blues in 1968-69, and by '70 the shows added more: fine acoustic playing of originals and traditional songs, and more variety in Pigpen's rock n roll boogie. I didn't see the Dead until 1977, and may I say they were quite unbelievable then, and only a fraction of what they were. Long live San Francisco's Grateful Dead!

I think the avg TOCJ is a great product, consistent and neutral, even dare I say your money's worth at $25 a throw. Harsh JVRGs are not uncommon, especially unfortunate given Rudy's in-your ear/face recording style. Everybody on this board should try some of those VICJ 20-bit discs, they really are nice. I'm not sure if these were in that series, but almost anything sourced from Contemporary, issued in Japan in 20-bit 1997-2000 (jewel case or cardboard), is going to sound really good I believe. Go for the Art Peppers, Hampton Hawes, Sonny Rollins if you can.
