Partial T-Bone Walker Mosaic Set F/S
AmirBagachelles replied to Abution II's topic in Offering and Looking For...
That's actually quite an amazing offer for the Blakey, considering the whole thing would go for $300. The booklet is quite good, too. It's original material, I believe, not a re-hash of album liners, yeah? -
Oleo will be out again in February. I like that early trio of discs from Hat, one of which was Topology. Don't know his solo stuff, so I guess I really don't know McPhee. A lot of it appears to be LP only and rare.

He does deserve his money back, as do most unhappy customers, excluding johns and that sort. (Jazzhound does deserve his money, but he is a bit of a john right here....) But he won't get his money back because it's Ebay, where almost anything goes, and the system overwhelmingly favors sellers. Stop the madness, don't pay big bucks blindly, especially when you have no recourse in reality.

I have dealt with them, yes some grossly mispriced things, that can be due to many factors, and we should not be offended. The labels are not making this stuff anymore, and we can always call and offer less. I have found great things there for $8-15. Condition of vinyl is never an issue, but call them on the phone for everything anyway, they will pull the record and go over every zit they see, they are honest people. For value, you might want to stick to $25 and below items, say Japan and European imports and 70s/80s vintage. Anything MFSL seems to get a knee-jerk $50, $100, or $200 price, unfortunately.

Best jazz performance you never saw ...
AmirBagachelles replied to mikeweil's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I had it mind to go hear Gunther Schuller's presentation of Mingus' Epitaph outdoors and for free at Lincoln Ctr in 1989, but I never made it uptown. Did anybody get to that concert? -
Recent JRVGs have had all bonus material I believe (e.g. Conquistador). They seem to cost a lot more for that reason and the dollar's decline.

Paying $500 thru the mail for a sight-unseen used item, let alone a fragile vinyl LP much more likely than not to show wear and tear (let me guess, it's 20+ yrs old?), qualifies as temporary insanity. And to send it overseas, well, you lacked common sense as well in that instance. Buy records and collectibles of any kind from dealers you know. Really know. Or expect to get ripped off occasionally.

Can I have been hacked even though my Antivirus
AmirBagachelles replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Get two firewalls, a hardware version integrated with the hub/router in your home and one for your PC. There will be no genuine fast Internet at the home I'm afraid, not with so much vulnerability scanning going on by the bad guys. There will be reverse firewalls soon (if not already) to control all outbound connections, and hopefully fix keylogger vulnerabilities that are enabling identity theft. I am also going to get a separate credit card for my on-line commerce, no way will I put my main banking info out there any longer. This week I spotted a string of small bogus charges from an ISP, now I have to fill out paperwork to get the bank to credit my account. In the meantime, they had to cancel and reissue my debit card. -
how to "fix" water-damaged paper?
AmirBagachelles replied to AmirBagachelles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
thanks!! I'm tuned in, waiting for the public svc announcements to end and for the program to return.... -
wow brownie, amazing and encyclopedic. Do you know anything about the Fantasy Town Hall music, the dates, is there more unreleased? Please spill for us. Pray with Eric is quite slow and pensive, lots of room for Jaki Byard to stretch, I loved that disc so much last night I played it twice straight thru consecutively. I agree, this should be like a Parker/Benedetti beat the boots pursuit for some label. It should all be out there assembled and heard, no matter the quality.

For the past six months I have been listening to music mostly at my desk at home, using a small set of Linn Tukans set up about 4-5 feet from either ear, w/ a small NAD all-in-one unit (CD/integrated). These are some tiny boxes, but it has been a great experience, very transparent, but begging for a better larger amp, stands, and a sub. Vocal music is especially amazing on these speakers. I recommend going to a Linn dealer, checking out some used gear if possible. Just because you have a larger room, you don't need a larger system necessarily. You may have simply want to take advantage of the flexibility to locate some top small monitors optimally (height included) and find a sub to mate with your speakers. Having said all that, if I had the money, I would go for some floor standing Linn Ninkas in a quick minute.

Debut in Blues and Breakthrough can had on 80s/90s reissue Japanese vinyl. The Argo vinyl I have dug up has been pretty beat.

btw - I believe Jazz Record Ctr in NYC still has sealed vinyl 1980s reissues of Music Recorded for Monterey, about $20 I think. You may need to specify that you want a new copy, they are not normally displayed, the used copies are. I am listening to the Enjas this evening, they are pretty satisfying sonically but somewhat hissy and flat (no dropouts though). The best sounding disc from this tour (I've been listening to many of them of them today) is the Jazz Workshop/Fantasy (OJC) Town Hall Concert 4-4-64. Wow, a major treat after hearing so many towering live performances that were not well captured to tape. The music on this disc is quite beautiful, lots of Mingus' bowing on Pray With Eric. The show sounds close-miked, you can hear a flea fart in the quiet passages. It is no small thrill to believe there may be more tapes of this band at this level of sound quality.

did I read here or on the old BNBB that water damaged paper (dried, wavy, pages stuck together) could be soaked and baked between sheets of glass, offering some potential salvage value? If so, can anybody offer a link or pointer? Thanks -

I was wrong. It's not just the low-end of the recording. There are many shattered moments where the horns clip out at the end. There is rampant distortion on these tracks, liner notes and sandals notwithstanding. Trust me, this sounds very self-produced for its time. I think if it weren't, every jazz one might know and have this date.

I have had the Monterey disc listed for sale for about a week, no takers here on the forum. It is a must hear and a good collectible, but the recording quality is very weak, the bass drum pretty much clips throughout, and the 20-bit version is no better than the 16-bit. I have both versions, I love this music, but the sound quality is a small tragedy. For the 64 live Mingus, I think the Enja discs and the Prestige LP / Musidisc CDs from Paris in April are the ones to get.

The Pete Rose Korner
AmirBagachelles replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Faye: Do the owners get a W-2 for all the free food, booze, and luxury suites they and their fat friends consume over the course of many seasons? I'm sure you are a good guy and all, but you were a major stooge for a major group of a$$holes for few years. We know Pete is a scumbag, but don't give us the condescending lines about "we". -
The Pete Rose Korner
AmirBagachelles replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
It is hard to believe there is even a debate about this. Baseball and all professional sports need the foundation of the no-gambling rule. Gambling on games, having a compulsive gambler who owes the mob as a team manager, this is serious slimy stuff. I would strongly presume that letting Pete Rose back into baseball in any way will be really dispiriting to many fans, and current and ex-players. So just like Shoeless Joe, he is as important for his bad mistakes as his merits as a player. I am not hopeful, but players, Weasel Bud, and the HOFers should take a stand against Rose and stand up for simplest form of integrity. -

A few new, much more later this week... -
I got picked off this week, my vulnerability was an easy identical password (and userids) in use at both Ebay and Yahoo. They hijacked my sellers acct which I just opened, and started listing items under my name. And Ebay and Yahoo are not known for their prompt live customer service. So watch out, check your accts often, and use stronger passwords. Strong is defined as upper and lower case alphas, a number, and a special character. Also use the SSL options when logging in, whenever possible. SSL reduces the amount of info you transmit in clear plain text. Also, auto bill pay w/ a credit/debit card is risky, switch to debits using your bank routing and acct number, this is safer than having your debit card info out there for possible misuse.

I listened to Cecil w/ Moholo on FMP over the weekend, I got less than halfway thru but I loved it. Moholo is nicely assertive throughout to my ears, the piano though is not well-recorded.

Looking for: Cecil Taylor - Garden pt.1 CD
AmirBagachelles replied to AmirBagachelles's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Does anybody have a half-sentence, a grunt, a gesture he/she could convert to keystrokes regarding Garden? Thanks, this seems to an obscure one.... Dan Also, does anybody recall a single hat CD w/ both volumes? -
Many BN titles for sale/trade

hot bait: Star Bright Hot session, you don't see that one around much. -
$15 FMP sale at DMG thru Christmas Eve, that's $3 better than J&R and $2 off DMG's regular price. DMG is my favorite stop too, hands down. Good used rack too. Vinyl is mispriced ($50 for Flowers for Albert?), but I think they don't care because it looks good up on the walls, I agree.
