GREAT NEWS! http://www.gdforum.com/cgi-bin/dada/mail.c...8&list=postcard Dick's Picks 35, and other items First, Dennis McNally asked me to spread this announcement far and wide about Dick's Picks 35, then we'll deal with a few more items: A Note About This Dick's Pick: The Legend of the Houseboat Tapes Although the Dead's vault is enormous and impressively full, the band certainly doesn't have a tape of every show it played; in fact, they don't even have a copy of every show they recorded. Tapes drifted off in a variety of ways - including Jerry Garcia handing them out… And therein lies the story of Dick's Picks #35. This spring, our archivist David Lemieux got a call from Donna Jean Godchaux-Mackay. It seems that in the late summer of 1971, just before Keith Godchaux began rehearsals with the Dead, Garcia handed him a big box of tapes and said, “Here, this is our most recent tour. Learn our music.” The irony was that Donna Jean doubts mightily Keith ever bothered to listen to them - he'd never listened to the Dead all that much before he auditioned, first with Garcia and then the rest of the band - he just had an uncanny innate facility for the music. In any case, he left the tapes on his parents' houseboat in Alameda, and there they stayed. For 35 years. A month ago, his brother Brian and son Zion were cleaning out the houseboat, found the tapes, and gave them to Donna, whose jaw dropped. One call to Lemieux later, and the Dead's long-lost missing tour from the summer of 1971 had resurfaced. Master tapes include April 28 and 29 at the Fillmore East (released as “Ladies and Gentlemen,” taken from the multi-track masters), the 7/31 Yale Bowl (alas, blank), a small piece of the Hollywood Bowl, Berkeley Community Theatre, and others. Dick's Pick #35 will be four CDs: the complete San Diego (8/7/71) show, all that was salvageable of the 8/24 Chicago show, and an hour-plus from the Hollywood Bowl (8/6). It will be available at dead.net Friday, June 17th. Not a soundboard-recorded note of that tour's music circulates among Dead Heads, so this is a truly remarkable find. How they survived 35 years in a watery environment simply proves, yet once again - if you needed convincing - that God smiles on the Grateful Dead. ********** Other coming attractions. By now you won't be surprised to hear that sometime in the future there will be some sort of 'product' release, it happens all the time. But I was told one interesting item slated for later this year, that is cleared for your consumption! In mid-October, there will be two items released, dealing with the same material. The Grateful Dead shows at the Fillmore West from 2-27-69 to 3-2-69 are legendary, and much of Live Dead comes from those shows. There will be a 10-CD package, limited to 10,000 copies, and available only from dead.net, that will contain every single note from the entire run. Rhino/WEA will release a 3-CD compilation of selected cuts from this series. The Rhino/WEA package will be available everywhere, including the GDForum store. So, there you go, now you have something else to look forward to!

I love the first volume of the "Live 1969". After the VU & Nico album I think it is probably my favorite. The version of "What Goes On" is incredible. I also like the early versions of "New Age" and "Sweet Jane".

There's a rumor going round that Bill Walton made an announcement on his Sirius radio show that beginning next Tuesday June 7 that GDP will begin to open the Vault to digital downloading. The first show available will be 1/18/70 which has never circulated. There will be a new show available for downloading on the first Tuesday of every month. I have no idea how much it will cost or how it will impact free downloading/trading. I heard this from two different people who both claim to have heard Walton make the announcement on his show this week so I'm assuming that the rumor is true. Guess we'll know more next week.... Stay tuned.

It's pretty good - not quite as good as Steppin' Out IMHO but pretty darn good. The stuff w/ Bo Diddley is hilarious. I ordered mine from GDP and got a bonus disc of material from the Academy of Music run from March '72. I'm not sure if they are still giving the bonus disc away.

How you like? I think it's their strongest album in years, even better than Murray Street which I loved! ← Totally agree w/ you. These two albums are their best work, IMHO, since they were on SST.
-
Buy it. It is the best non-Dick's Picks live release that they have put out IMHO Like others have mentioned the sound is incredible as are the performances.

Whoa. Hey Alan did you happen to catch this little snippet on the Ars Nova website??? Stay tuned for a series celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) presented by Ars Nova Workshop and International House.

My wife's a teacher at a charter school in Philly. They might be hiring. Keep in mind that Philly schools don't pay as much as suburban schools.

40 Years Worth of Memorabilia Soon to be Made Available on the New Dead.net LOS ANGELES, May 17 /PRNewswire/ -- BIG INTERACTIVE, a Los Angeles based Digital Marketing agency, today announced that it has been selected by Grateful Dead Productions, curators and gatekeepers of all things "Dead," to redesign their official online website. The win comes after an extensive multi-agency review. It was critical for us to work with an agency that understands the legacy of The Grateful Dead, where we see our website going, the music, and most importantly the fans themselves," said Cameron Sears, CEO of the Grateful Dead Productions. The band's current site has been, since its grass-roots launch in 1995, one of the most-trafficked band sites on the Web. BIG is planning an innovative, user-friendly re-imagination of the site that will showcase exclusive, never-before-seen content from The Grateful Dead's rich vault of audio and video recordings, promotional material, and private items such as hand-written lyrics. The revamped dead.net will launch late summer of 2005. "We are thrilled to be awarded this win. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to work with such a legendary band. We're huge fans ourselves," commented Matt Minkin, CEO of BIG Interactive. http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories....03633303&EDATE=

More good news.... 'Chappelle' DVD plans still on track Tue May 17, 2005 09:14 PM ET By Thomas K. Arnold LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - The third season of Comedy Central's hit "Chappelle's Show" might be postponed indefinitely, but Paramount Home Entertainment is proceeding with plans to release the complete second season on DVD on May 24 -- a week before Season 3 was supposed to debut on TV. Initially, "Chappelle's Show Season Two: Uncensored" (about $37) had been slated for release last February, the originally scheduled date for the Season 3 premiere. But when Comedy Central announced the show was running behind schedule, May dates were set for both the DVD and the new season of the top-rated sketch comedy series starring comedian Dave Chappelle. The buzz around Chappelle's supposed flight to South Africa to check into a mental-health clinic -- reported by Entertainment Weekly but subsequently denied by Chappelle, who said that he's staying with friends in Durban -- could spur DVD sales of the Season 2 set to record heights, industry observers say. "Chappelle's Show Season One" has sold about 2.8 million copies since its February 2004 release and is the top-selling TV DVD package of all time, Paramount claims. Paramount has done so well with Chappelle and several other high-profile releases -- including "Blue Collar Comedy Tour Rides Again," which has sold more than 2.5 million DVDs since its release last December -- that the studio is upping its commitment to the comedy genre. Domestic home entertainment president Meagan Burrows said that the studio is "in the process of developing a new comedy label," with several releases already in the pipeline, including a third "Blue Collar Comedy Tour" DVD. Paramount also has inked a multiyear, "first look" worldwide agreement with Parallel Entertainment Pictures, producers of the "Blue Collar Comedy Tour Rides Again" DVD, for six DVD premieres, a feature film and a new DVD starring Larry the Cable Guy. In addition, Paramount is working with Comedy Central to release performances by up-and-coming stand-up acts, Burrows said. "Chappelle's Show Season Two: Uncensored" includes such extras as an additional standup routine from Chappelle, more than an hour of bloopers and deleted scenes, two unaired Charlie Murphy stories and several audio commentaries from Chappelle and series co-creator Neal Brennan. Dave Chappelle Says He's Not Crazy Sun May 15,11:06 AM ET Comedian Dave Chappelle wants to set things straight: "I'm not crazy, I'm not smoking crack," he tells Time magazine in an interview more than a week after his hit Comedy Central show was suspended and the rumors started to fly. "I'm definitely stressed out," said Chappelle, who took off last month to South Africa for a "spiritual retreat," leaving his fans — and even his agent and publicist — wondering where he went. "You hear so many voices jockeying for position in your mind that you want to make sure that you hear your own voice," he said. "So I figured, let me just cut myself off from everybody, take a minute and pull a Flintstone — stop a speeding car by using my bare feet as the brakes." After Comedy Central announced that the planned May 31 debut of the third season of "Chappelle's Show" had been postponed, the magazine Entertainment Weekly reported that Chappelle had checked himself into a mental health facility in South Africa. "I'm not in a mental facility," said Chappelle, who also said he did not have a drug problem but had consulted a psychiatrist for one 40-minute visit. The 31-year-old comedian said he fled to stay with friends in Durban because he wasn't happy with the direction of the show, which is behind only "South Park" as Comedy Central's most-watched program. "There's a lot of resistance to my opinions, so I decided, 'Let me remove myself from this situation,'" Chappelle said. Comedy Central president Doug Herzog told Time that the star has "complete creative freedom." He has told staff he believes there won't be a "Chappelle's Show" in 2005, but leaves the option open for the comedian's return. Chappelle, whose wife and two children live in Ohio, said he hopes to start up the show again, but did not indicate when he would return. Comedy Central had inked a reported $50 million deal to keep "Chappelle's Show" for two more seasons, and the comedian hinted to Time about struggles associated with the power and fame that come with that kind of success. "If you don't have the right people around you, and you're moving at a million miles an hour, you can lose yourself," he said. "Everyone around me says, 'You're a genius, you're great, that's your voice,' but I'm not sure that they're right."
