Happy 58th to this guy.....

Whoa! I just found this thread. Just wanted to echo the sentiments of the other board members. Hopefully we can meet up at one of the ATTF shows for a beer and a chat. Take it easy. Oh, and thanks for all of your work w/ the Jazzmatazz site. A truly indispensable resource.

I don't think I know all of them. One requirement was a non-smoking environment, which eliminates him from most of the clubs. (Unless and until a smoking ban is enacted in Philly.) He may have wanted vibes provided. I don't know his monetary requirement. I think I pased his name along to a booker who does some more avant garde things, but don't think anything developed. Maybe I'll try to ask some of the other musicians in his area for ideas. ← Alan After reading your post I emailed Mark Christman. He replied almost immediately I absolutely want to have Walt perform. Do you have contact information? Or, know anything about his current state, etc? Regards, Mark So if you can email Mark or call(the info is available on the ArsNova site) w/ Walt's contact info I think he'll get the ball rolling!!

Yeah, we should definitely meet up at one of these gigs. Maybe we can get Ron to show up too. The next one I'm catching is this: Monday, October 24, 2005 | 8pm Joseph Jarman/Chris Chalfant Duo with Joseph Jarman, saxophones/flutes Chris Chalfant, piano Houston Hall | University of Pennsylvania 3614 Spruce Street | Philadelphia Free Admission Should be great. I've never caught Jarman live. He didn't play w/ AEOC at their last gig in Philly.

The Philly show was superb. One minor complaint, I thought Shahid's bass was miked too loud, he even motioned to cut it back at one point. I drove to Baltimore the next day to see two sets of Mitchell solo. Someone should make a documentary on him and record a few of these performances. It's mind-boggling how amazing this guy is. ← I agree the Philly show was excellent. I had a hard time getting there between the rain and my knee(I was the guy w/ the cane in the 3rd row) but I'm so glad I made the effort. They played one piece for about 1 and 15 minutes. Roscoe did a l-o-n-g solo near the end that seemed to involve circular breathing. I had read about Coltrane doing this but I had never witnessed this in person. Not being a Sax player I can't be sure but anyway it was incredible! Muhal played some really interesting accompaniment on piano that reminded me of Cecil Taylor. I thought he was too low in the mix, though . A friend of mine got permission to make an audio/video recording of the complete show. So if anyone does decide to make a documentary there will be footage available.

Just finished "A People's History of the United States" by Howard Zinn. 700 pages but it still felt like he just skimmed the surface, especially from WWII to the present. Interesting prespective from someone on the far left of the dial. I just started "Freakonomics" last night. Pretty good so far. Here's a link http://www.freakonomics.com/ for anything by Robert Stone.

Philly Named "Next Great City" By Nat'l Geographic

Okay... I've lived in Philly since '85. West Philly until '92. Lived at 21st and Spruce from 92-95 and from '95 until now at 13th and Rodman. So I have a feeling that I must have crossed paths w/ both of you at one time or another. I've seen a lot of changes over the years. West Pihilly back in the mid 80's was known for REALLY cheap housing. Then the crack epidemic hit and it got really unsafe out there. After my apartment had been robbed for the 2nd time I moved downtown just off "THE Square". The 3 years that I lived there were a pretty bad time for Center City. Lots of homeless people, a rape/murder @21st & Pine that was never solved. Jobs and residents feeling the city in droves. It was around this time that the Center City District was born and Rendell started cracking down on agressive panhandling. '95 saw the bottoming out of the real estate market. I bought a "fixer upper" on Rodman for under $40k. Not too longer after that Rendell announced his "Avenue of the Arts"vision which was to turn south Broad Street into a mecca for performing arts. A new home for the Philadelphia Orchestra was built (The Kimmel Center) which signaled the beginning of the Center City renaissance. The past 8 years or so have seen a 180 degree change in Philly quality of life issues. Crime is way down. Tons of new restaurants have opened along w/ national retail chains. We're even getting a hip, upscale bowling alley at Broad and Chestnut in a few months. Real estate has really taken off. 2 homes on my block both sold for over $400K last year. Ka-ching! There is a huge amount of development, surpassing the urban renewal of the 60's that gave us Society Hill. Other neighborhoods have done well too. West Philly, thanks in a large part to the University of Pennsylvania(which is actually the 4th oldest schoool in the USA) spearheading redevelopment, is now a hot spot to dine, shop, and live. Manayunk, Old City, Northern Liberties, and the Art Museum/Fairmount are some of the most swinging-est places you can be. The city is also on track to become the first major city in the US to offer free wireless internet. Pretty cool. But there is still much work to be done. Jobs/residents are still leaving the city, albeit, at a much slower rate. Taxes (wage, business, & real estate) are hurting development as is the hopelessly out dated zoning code. Cronyism is still the name of the game at Cith Hall. Schools still need a dedicated source of funding(test scores/graduation rates are up). All in all, Philly is a great place to live, and thanks to Ron the secret is out. -
The crowd of 40,590 was about 10,000 short of a sellout. At a playoff game in Atlanta?? No way

A: Death, Taxes, and the Atlanta Braves choking in the first round of the playoffs. Q: Name 3 sure bets

http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n.../w114013D36.DTL (09-21) 11:40 PDT WASHINGTON (AP) -- Men are dirtier than women. So scientists confirmed by spying in public restrooms, watching as one-quarter of men left without washing their hands. The worst offenders were at an Atlanta Braves game. ..... _The worst hygiene was at Atlanta's Turner Field baseball stadium, where 37 percent of men left the bathroom without washing, and 16 percent of the women did.

I don't know where you were, but as recently as last weekend I was in Center City Philly on a Sunday afternoon, walking all around the area between Broad Street and Rittenhouse Square. The streets were full of people enjoying the beautiful weather, the many open shops, galleries, restaurants, and sidewalk cafes, and bucolic Rittenhouse Square itself. And other areas of Philly's central core I've visited on recent weekends (e.g., Old City, Society Hill, Market Street East) have been equally as bustling. Not to mention other restaurant and shopping districts in other parts of the city (e.g., Manayunk, Chestnut Hill). So wherever you were is not representative of much of Philly. Ironically, the most aggresive "street person" I've ever encountered was in Chicago, right outside the Drake Hotel of all places. And having lived in NYC, DC, Miami, and Texas (Austin and Houston), I can assure you that the panhandlers in Philly's central core are no more aggressive or plentiful than in the central cores of those other cities. ← You also have to add in the Jersey Shore factor. It's only 90 minutes away and most of the Center City residents that can get away for the weekend in the summer, do so and leave the city to the tourists. Especially in August. -
JRo hitting streak now at 35 games. Go Phils!!! (and Cubs!)

I use TY's too but I prefer the white ones.... http://www.american-digital.com/prodsite/product.asp?p=640 I use TDK's only if I run out of TY's(or like Don for the "less than critical" stuff). Never had a problem w/ them. I use to be one of those "Japanes only" snobs but it's getting harder and harder to find discs that say "made in Japan" in the local shops, so I've lowered my standards a little Seriously, the only discs I've ever had trouble w/ are Maxell's and Memorex. I can't get them to play on anything. If someone sends me one I just extract the music and reburn onto something else. Oh just remembered - I've had some Imations that had the silver peel off of after 4 or 5 years.
