Chalupa replied to alankin's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I went to see Sonic Youth, who were playing Penn's Spring Fling(which may acc't for a low student turnout). Still kicking myself about not seeing John Tchicai last Saturday nor Prince Lasha the next night at the Slought. D'oh! -
Ditto that. I get my queue selection 3 or 4 days after the queue date.

Dave Brubeck Quartet in Philly on 3/16/05
Chalupa replied to Ron S's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Not sure if this post merits its own thread so I thought I put it in here... I saw the McCoy Tyner Trio on Friday night at the Gershman Y at Broad & Pine. McCoy was backed by Charnet Moffett on bass and Lewis Nash on drums. It was basically the same concert that I saw two years when he had Moffett and Eric Rawlands on drums. However, I enjoyed this one a little better because, for me, I find Nash's drumming to a better fit for McCoy. Less bashing more finess. Charnett Moffett was out of control. He was taking some insane solos - in one instance he was slapping his upright like it was an electric bass. Best part of the evening..... The band had just returned to the stage for an encore when a little old African American woman walked up to the stage using a cane. McCoy recognized her right away and they hugged and talked for a minute. Then McCoy said,"this is my 8th grade music teacher and she wants to know if it would be okay if she played a song'. Polite applause. The woman(I didn't catch her name unfortunately) then proceeds to sit down and start wailing in a stride paino style. Fingers are flying everywhere. At the end of the number she stands up, walks over to McCoy, grabs the mic and says,"Not bad for a 97 year old woman!" The whole theater erupted with laughter and gave her a standing ovation. After the show I stood outside with my friend as he had a cigarette. As we watched the crowd disperse I saw more than one person shake their head and mutter, "97 years old!!" Indeed. -
Dang. Just got an email saying they were no longer carrying Bobby Hutcherson's Now.

My DeepDiscountCD order arrived today. I listened to the Emergency and the Frank Wright discs 3 times each while I was painting the downstairs. Tremendous. I love them both and if I had to pick a favorite I would say the Emergency disc just by a hair. Thanks for the recommendations.

Almost forgot.... Dave Burrell was at the show. He sat right in front of me and applauded every solo. After the show I saw him go into the dressing room and speak w/ Henry. I'd like to see them play together.

Just got back from seeing the Philly show. Quick mini review.... Pretty amazing. Marshall played really well tonight as did Henry. I thought it was just going to be the two of them improvising the entire night but Marshall had a music stand w/ sheet music about two inches thick in front of him. They were joined for two numbers by two Arkestra members Danny Thompson(on flute) and Yahya Abdul-Majid(on tenor). The whole show was video taped and I saw two additional audio tapes being made. Marshall also taped it(he tapes all of his shows from the bandstand) w/a mini disc recorder. Henry was not playing the green bass this time. Marshall alternated between Alto, Clarinet, and something called an EVI. It's the one of the strangest instruments I've ever heard. Sort of like a cross between a Sax and a DX7. I've seen him play it before w/ the Arkestra. In fact I can remember seeing the whole front line playing them at shows back in the 80's. Here's a photo I took of Marshall holding it... http://us.f1.yahoofs.com/users/3f79f5cd_12...h2D8OCBzvkM0p4B After the show I got to chat w/ Danny Thompson for about 15 minutes and he gave me and my friend a mini history of the Arkestra. My friend mentioned to Danny that first time he saw the Arkestra play was in NYC back in the early 80's when Sun Ra had put out a call to get 100 musicians to play w/ him. My friend said it was more like 50 or 60 and Danny corrected him. "Actually, it was 110. I know because I had to pay EVERYONE!"

For our Philly area posters..... I just got back from the Tower Records on Broad & Chestnut. They have all 15 titles in stock with 5 or 6 copies of each. A little pricey at $18.99 + tax but they have 'em I got "Phase One" w/ "0666" stamped on the back. Hmm.......
-
BTW, in case anyone is keeping track, my Burrell cd was stamped #2153.
-
I was in a local record store yesterday and saw that they had all of the titles in stock. I picked up the Dave Burrell disc, passing on the rest because of my order with DeepDiscount. Unfortunately, when I got home there was an email from DeepDiscount saying the 3 cds I ordered(AEOC- Phase One, Emergency, Frank Wright) had been backordered. Oh well at least i have the Burrell, which I like.
-
That's right $42(or $35). I was thinking 6 discs for some reason. Duh.
-
I can understand wanting the individual cds. However, if someone was on a budget or a completeist - ordering the box from yourmusic.com would be the way to go. Depending whether you signed up for the $5.99 deal or the $4.99(like myself B-) )you can get the box delivered to your door for either $35.94 or $29.94.
-
FWIW....Miles Davis in Europe is missing the 16 minute version of Bye Bye Blackbird that was included on the 7 Steps box.
-
I just ordered the AEOC - Phase One, Emergency - Homage to Peace, and the Frank Wright. Hope I don't get a backordered message
-
All of the recordings made for Philly Jazz(except Lanquidity which is on cd already).
