  2. My DeepDiscountCD order arrived today. I listened to the Emergency and the Frank Wright discs 3 times each while I was painting the downstairs. Tremendous. I love them both and if I had to pick a favorite I would say the Emergency disc just by a hair. Thanks for the recommendations.
  3. Almost forgot.... Dave Burrell was at the show. He sat right in front of me and applauded every solo. After the show I saw him go into the dressing room and speak w/ Henry. I'd like to see them play together.

  5. Just got back from seeing the Philly show. Quick mini review.... Pretty amazing. Marshall played really well tonight as did Henry. I thought it was just going to be the two of them improvising the entire night but Marshall had a music stand w/ sheet music about two inches thick in front of him. They were joined for two numbers by two Arkestra members Danny Thompson(on flute) and Yahya Abdul-Majid(on tenor). The whole show was video taped and I saw two additional audio tapes being made. Marshall also taped it(he tapes all of his shows from the bandstand) w/a mini disc recorder. Henry was not playing the green bass this time. Marshall alternated between Alto, Clarinet, and something called an EVI. It's the one of the strangest instruments I've ever heard. Sort of like a cross between a Sax and a DX7. I've seen him play it before w/ the Arkestra. In fact I can remember seeing the whole front line playing them at shows back in the 80's. Here's a photo I took of Marshall holding it... http://us.f1.yahoofs.com/users/3f79f5cd_12...h2D8OCBzvkM0p4B After the show I got to chat w/ Danny Thompson for about 15 minutes and he gave me and my friend a mini history of the Arkestra. My friend mentioned to Danny that first time he saw the Arkestra play was in NYC back in the early 80's when Sun Ra had put out a call to get 100 musicians to play w/ him. My friend said it was more like 50 or 60 and Danny corrected him. "Actually, it was 110. I know because I had to pay EVERYONE!"
  6. For our Philly area posters..... I just got back from the Tower Records on Broad & Chestnut. They have all 15 titles in stock with 5 or 6 copies of each. A little pricey at $18.99 + tax but they have 'em I got "Phase One" w/ "0666" stamped on the back. Hmm.......
  7. BTW, in case anyone is keeping track, my Burrell cd was stamped #2153.
  8. I was in a local record store yesterday and saw that they had all of the titles in stock. I picked up the Dave Burrell disc, passing on the rest because of my order with DeepDiscount. Unfortunately, when I got home there was an email from DeepDiscount saying the 3 cds I ordered(AEOC- Phase One, Emergency, Frank Wright) had been backordered. Oh well at least i have the Burrell, which I like.
  9. Slightly off topic..... Has anyone here ever read anything by Charles Rosen?? His best known book is "The Classical Style". I saw him give a performance/lecture on Mozart about 6 or 7 years ago. A real "Renaissance" man.
  10. That's right $42(or $35). I was thinking 6 discs for some reason. Duh.
  11. I can understand wanting the individual cds. However, if someone was on a budget or a completeist - ordering the box from yourmusic.com would be the way to go. Depending whether you signed up for the $5.99 deal or the $4.99(like myself B-) )you can get the box delivered to your door for either $35.94 or $29.94.
  12. FWIW....Miles Davis in Europe is missing the 16 minute version of Bye Bye Blackbird that was included on the 7 Steps box.
  13. I just ordered the AEOC - Phase One, Emergency - Homage to Peace, and the Frank Wright. Hope I don't get a backordered message
  14. All of the recordings made for Philly Jazz(except Lanquidity which is on cd already).
  15. How did your buying spree go?

  17. But, unfortunately you won't be visiting 3rd Street Jazz, where Sun Ra used to sell his singles hot off the press. That was really the place to be and buy. --eric Tis true about 3rd Street Jazz. FWIW....The owner of A.K.A. Music used to work at 3rd St. - he ran the rock section downstairs. Fun factoid - he named his daughter Strummer after Joe Strummer from the Clash.
  18. The Carl Stalling Project- Music From the Warner Bros. Cartoons
  19. Sound of Market (on 11th street btw Market and Chestnut) 3rd floor has best selection of jazz cds in the city. Tower Records on Broad and Chestnut has a pretty good Jazz section but they are pricey. If you're looking for used lps go to the Philadelphia Record Exchange located on 5th Btw South & Bainbridge. For Indie there are 2 or 3 stores on South btw 4th and 6(Space Boy, Repo records are both good albeit, a little small). A.K.A. music on 2nd street just north of Market is great. Good prices, WIDE selection, hot female staff B-) and they have a lot of used cds and some vinyl too.
  20. I was in a record store in Philly 2 or 3 years ago when Marshall came in looking for the Moody cd. The clerk, who knew Marshall, asked him why he wanted this particular Moody cd. Marshall told him that he played on it. When the clerk looked up the cd in the computer he said,"Damn, Marshall you recorded that over 50 years ago"!! To which Marshall replied, "Yep". I have a CIMP of the Marshall Allen Quartet called "Tuesday". It has a great cover of Ra's Opus Springtime which I saw Marshall perform live w/ a stripped down version of the Arkestra a few years ago.
  21. So did anyone else make it down to the Bride on Saturday night to catch Steve Bernstein??? I only caught the late show but it was sweet. What a frickin' lineup - SB on trumpet, backed by Uri Caine, the Sam Rivers Trio, Marty Erhlich, and Vincent Chancey on French horn!!
  22. Thanks for all of the great music.
  23. Thanks Quincy. Yes, let's keep our fingers crossed and hope the powers that be over at Grateful Dead Productions come to their senses and release the beast!!
  24. From what I can gather a "podcast" is a pre-recorded show that you can download to your Ipod or mp3 player of choice. I've been hearing rumors that a major announcement about a release of a box set of the entire Fillmore 2/27-3/2/69 run will be happening soon.... not sure if it is a hoax or not. God, I hope it's not. ---------------------------------------------- DavidGans - 11:45am Mar 5, 2005 PDT High Noon By The Bay Hello - This was emailed to me with no disclaimer on it not being for public disemination (which is the typical deal): "In conjunction with Apple, we will be making the official announcement on the 1966 Rarites download on Tuesday to coincide with the announcement of the 40th Anniversary celebration release of the 1969 Fillmore West Box. Could you mention it on KPFA Wednesday? Peace, Eileen." Dick would have screamed with joy - WooHoo! David
