  1. I pulled this out today and gave it a spin. It might be my favorite official release. I can't be believe good ol' Lindsay only gave it 4 out 5 stars
  2. BUY IT NOW!
  3. not sure how rare this is but I picked up vol.2 of Sam Rivers/ Dave Holland on lp(mint) for $10 yesterday.
  4. You should be able to listen to all three at archive.org http://www.archive.org/audio/etreelisting-...0Dead%3A%201975
  5. I think they only did Blues For Allah 3 times 3/23/75, 6/17/75, & 8/13/75(OFTV).
  6. One From the Vault is the August show.
  7. I saw them last spring in Philly w/ Bardo Pond opening. Tremendous.
  8. Saw this on another board.... I got "Beyond Description" through dead.net today...excellent sound and packaging. Unfortunately my copy of Shakedown Street has an error during "New Minlewood Blues." At about the 3:46 mark there is a skip, the lyrics "stealin women from their men" get cut. That part is intact on the original CD issue of Shakedown, I compared them. Then there is another short skip after that. Also, I hear that the next DP(DP33) is going to be a combo of 10/9-10/76.
  9. Another look at A-Rod's interference play - "The Slap"

  11. Does anyone know of a good place on the web to find ringtones for my cell phone???
  12. This past May, Max Roach was the recipient of an honorary degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He was too ill at the time to attend. This was not a surprise since Penn had been notified months before that he could not attend. In his abscence his daughter Maxine accepted the degree for him. A good friend of mine had the pleasure of escorting Maxine around for the day. My friend is a avid jazz lover and spoke at some length w/ Maxine about her father. She was very candid and told him that he wasn't doing well. Apparently it is true that he needs constant, around the clock care. My friend said that Maxine seemed to be very concerned about her father and from what she told my friend it sounded as if she was doing everything she could to make sure her father was being looked after. Until someone can confirm that Max isn't being treated well I will continue to assume that his family is doing the right thing.
  13. The only connection, besides the song title, is that there was a Dead cover band called "Jazz is Dead" which featured bassist Alphonso Johnson who was a former member of Weather Report. Edit: Wait I just remembered there is one more connection - Airto Moreira. He is known to haved played a number of times w/ the Dead in the 80's during the "Drum" segements of their NYE shows. But I hardly think that this qualifies as a WR/Dead jam.
  14. Re: Weather Report/Dead Never happened.

  16. One of the most hilarious things I've ever read on a BB was the "transcript" of the phone conversation between LD and Aric on the old BN BB. Can someone post it if they have it??
  17. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=stor.../music_miles_dc Set Traces Steps to Miles' Classic Quintet Sat Sep 25, 8:20 AM ET By Dan Ouellette NEW YORK (Billboard) - Anticipating the next Miles Davis boxed set from Columbia/Legacy Jazz has become an annual event. After six previous packages chronicling the iconic trumpeter's career, "Seven Steps: The Complete Columbia Recordings of Miles Davis 1963-1964" arrives Sept. 28. The silver, black and white box in Swiss graphic style holds seven CDs with 47 tracks that document an important transitional period in Davis' career. Unlike earlier Legacy boxes that focus on a specific collaboration or an established ensemble, "Seven Steps" chronicles the trumpeter's trial-and-error quest for a new band after the 1962 dissolution of his longstanding rhythm section of pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Jimmy Cobb. These sessions detail Davis trying out such saxophonists as George Coleman and Sam Rivers, pianist Victor Feldman and drummer Frank Butler before finally settling on the group of young upstarts -- saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Tony Williams -- who formed his classic '60s quintet. The Davis reissue projects have been a commercial and critical success for Legacy, garnering nine Grammy Awards. "They sell very well," Legacy VP of jazz marketing Seth Rothstein says. "We make 50,000 limited-edition copies for the world. With sales of 25,000-30,000 in the U.S. and the rest going to Europe and Japan, you can think of 'Seven Steps' as being gone already. Eventually we'll reissue the set in long-box configurations." Rothstein says the Davis series has been a cornerstone of the label. "Documenting Miles' career for the last 10 years has been one of the premier historical jazz reissue projects," he says. "He was at Columbia for 30 years. I can't think of anyone else who had such a long affiliation. He recorded a diversity of music, and we've been able to find a decent amount of unreleased material." As for "Seven Steps," Rothstein says he is fascinated by Davis' intuitive genius. "Here's Miles who loses John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans and then his rhythm section. He's a giant. He's searching for a new sound, and he does it again." The series will continue with a box that focuses on Davis' electric period from 1972 to 1975. Currently slated for a fall 2005 release, it will again be co-produced by Davis authorities Bob Belden and Michael Cuscuna. Reuters/Billboard
  18. LOL! Let us know what you find out. If it's not too far out of the way I might be able to drive by and snap a picture.
  19. Jazzbo, no love for the Blues for Allah album?
  20. Chris A. would probably know. I think he was living in Philly around that time.
  21. it's a bit torrent site for trading live music. Similar to bt.easytree.org
  22. FYI - STG is back up and running.
  23. I think the records were supposed to have been wrapped in paper and string for mailing, which would account for them being "unopened". I agree, the story sounds a little too "romanticized" to be true. Dang, now I'm going to have rent the Burns DVD's
