  1. Although details of her birth date and early life vary widely, Devine said Sumac was born Zoila Augusta Emperatriz Chavarri del Castillo in Cajamarca, Peru, on Sept. 13, 1922. She later said she began singing when she was about 9. After joining Vivanco's large group of native singers, dancers and musicians, she made her radio debut in 1942; she and Vivanco were married the same year. In Argentina in 1943, she and Vivanco's group recorded a series of Peruvian folk songs. By then, she was known professionally as Imma Sumack (Capitol Records later changed the spelling). And here all this time I thought she was born Amy Camus and had just spelled her name backwards.
  2. Oh you're right . The Phillies are just obsessed with the Mets. C'mon now, like you said Rollins didn't say anything that big about the Mets so I wouldn't read more into then it is BUT.... I think the Phillies definitely will be on the minds of the Mets players if they win a championship. I mean they already are on the Mets' minds. Look at what Beltran said when they signed Santana last winter,"Tell Jimmy Rollins that we're the team to beat now." WTF? I think that the reason Rollins mentioned them is that the Mets are their number #1 rival and it's only natural to want to tweak your rival whenever you get the chance. Especially in Rollins' case after he took A LOT of flak for his,"We're the team to beat" comment. Really it was nothing more than some good natured ribbing. One of my son's favorite movies is "Chicken Little". In the movie there's a high school baseball game played for the championship and the announcer says,"This excitement isn't just about the fun of baseball. It's not about the prize. It's about the gloating and rubbing their noses in it. The "Nah-Nah-Nah-Nah-Nah! We beat you!" taunting if you will, that comes with the winning." Obviously the announcer character is joking but I think there's a bit of truth in that statement as well.
  3. Phils fans should check today's Inky/Daily News www.philly.com for coverage of yesterday's parade. Some incredible photos. I have to say it was a lot of fun. Estimated 2 million people lined the parade route. One of the highlight's was Chase Utley dropping the F bomb at the ceremony. http://larrybrownsports.com/youtubeage/vid...ade-speech/3492 Man, I'd never thought I'd say this but I'm glad this is finally over. I'm just so exhausted - mentally and physically. I just laid around house today. Took a nice long nap - probably some of best sleep in two weeks. My voice is still hoarse from all of the yelling on Wednesday night.
  4. Wow. Here it is a little over 24 hours later and I'm still trying to comprehend what happened last night. What a roller coaster ride the last 3-4 days have been here for everyone in Philly! After 25 years and all of the nearly there but just coming up short endings I can't tell you how great this feels. This win was a cathartic experience on so many levels. Philly sports fans are used to their teams snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory(Game 6 1993 WS, Super Bowl XXXIX, etc.) I guess Cubs' fans or Red Sox fans' can relate but then again they had other teams in their towns that had won championships to lessen the blows. Not us. 98 seasons(100 if you count the '94 baseball strike and the NHL strike) without a championship. This losing thing really had a psychological grip on the city. And when the Rays came back and tied the game a good two innings after the game should have been halted the thought going through everyone's mind here was,'Oh no. Not again." I talked to my dad on Tuesday morning and he said he was so mad at Selig that he could not fall asleep until 3:00am. Tuesday truly was a dreadful day. Cold, rainy, windy - just awful. The kind of weather we might get in January. It just seemed so ominous, the lowest of lows. How could we go from up 3-1 w/ Cole Hamels on the mound, he of the un-hittable change up, cruising along before the rain - now out of the game? It wasn't supposed to end like that. And now with one of the most improbable outcomes to one of the most improbable World Series games ever played it's all forgotten. Mitch Williams? You're off the hook. Donovan McChoke? Love ya. Lindros? Come here you knucklehead. AI? Practice is canceled. After the game last night I went out to Broad Street w/ my video camera just so that I could have my own record of the celebration. It was awesome. There were probably somewhere around 50,000 fans out on Broad, between South Street and City Hall last night. Complete strangers were coming up to me and giving me hugs, offering me beer, laughing/crying/shouting with glee. This morning as I was walking my son to his preschool people were giving him high fives when they saw his Phillies cap. The women who runs the store where I get him a bagel every morning gave him a freebie when she saw his hat. Nice. I tried to get some World Championship gear at 3 or 4 different stores today but there were lines just to get into the stores. F that. So I'll just be wearing a battered old cap and my Obama button that says,"GO PHILLIES!" on it for the parade tomorrow. Maybe my red Phillies t-shirt w/ "Utley 26" on the back if it warms up to the low 60's forecast. My wife's school gave her kids the day off figuring, rightly, that most of the kids are going to cut school anyway. Can you blame them? Hell Jamie Moyer cut school to attend the 1980 parade. And now look at him! I'm so happy for the this city, the Phillies, the fans, Harry Kalas, and my dad and my father-in-law who were both wondering if they would live to see another championship in Philly. I'm especially happy for Pat Burrell who had to endure more grief from the fans than anyone. He also played on all of those crappy teams but to his credit his stuck it out and now's he's a fan favorite. His double breaking an 0 for World Series slump led to the Phils' scoring the winning run. What an ending to his career here in Philly. Thanks Pat. Phew. What a ride.
  5. You are not losing interest, just cuz your team has lost 2 straight, right? Don't worry, they will win tomorrow, or is it Tuesday??? Too lazy to look up. Then all bets are off back in Tampa. Yeah Fox sports has way more annoying advertising than TBS! I don't want to get over confident here but I gotta like, nay LOVE, the Phillies' chances tonight. Howard and the rest of the bats are starting to come around and we've got Hamels on the mound who is undefeated this October. And the Phils are showing the rest of the world that they have the best bullpen in the Majors this year. How about last night's game? Joltin' Joe Blanton! That homer he hit went farther that Howard's first dinger. Finally the Phils' bats are awakening. Can't say the same for the Rays. Pena and Longoria are a combined 0 for 29 with 16 strike outs. Ouch. Man the umps blew another call which was even more outrageous than the blown Moyer call from game 3. Rollins was trying to get back to third when the third basemen for the Rays stuck his glove half way up Rollins' ass RIGHT IN FRONT of the 3rd base ump. I couldn't believe it. Still can't.
  6. You've got to be kidding me. I'm guessing you didn't see Game 4 of the NLCS when Matt Stairs hit THE BOMB? Or Saturday's/Sunday's ninth inning?? I mean how many times have you ever seen a slow, pudgy catcher get an infield hit against 5 infielders?? That was crazy!! I would think that just watching Cole Hamels throw the world's greatest change up past all of those hitters would be amazing for any fan of the game to watch. Then again I guess being a Mets' fan you get to see that too much in regular season How can you be saying that you're "losing interest"?? Seriously, it's comments like that that make people say that the MLB should pull out of Florida because the fan support isn't there. Can you imagine a fan from Boston, New York, or Philly saying that about a World Series that involved their team? No way.
  7. Which Gwigwi? This one? Never came around buying it... looks good if the line-up is an indication! Get it.
  8. Love Jamie Moyer. I mean how could you not? He's an all round super nice guy who runs a camp for kids that have lost a parent. He skipped school to watch the Phils 1980 parade down Broad Street and now he's helped that same team get two wins away from being in his own parade. Man I was so freakin' MAD when that ump called Upton safe. They have to expand instant replay next year - at least for the playoffs/ WS. That call almost cost them the game. Wojciechowski has good article on why you should be watching the WS if you're not..... http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/sto...mp;sportCat=mlb
  9. Merl Saunders died this morning. http://www.marinij.com/marinnews/ci_10806195?source=rss
  10. Chase Utley!!!
  11. Guess who's singing the Star-Spangled Banner for game 1???
  12. I just mentioned this in the live shows folder but last week I saw a band call Sunn 0))). Seriously LOUD. I had earplugs in for the entire show and my ears were still ringing the next day. Here's a link to a photo and a brief review.... http://criticalmass.blogs.citypaper.net/bl...itarian-church/
  13. A lot of good info in this thread.... http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...p;hl=BYG/Actuel
  14. Very annoying, as I thought might be the case from records, but I had to hear what he sounded like in-person 'cause sometimes that makes a big difference and so many good people (including good musicians) dig him. Roughly, a "farther out" Joe Lovano without even the sub-interest of handling changes with some deftness, plus that hoarse, gargly neo-Trane sound that I can't stand -- the one where the player sounds from the first note like his eyes are half-shut in ecstasy. I walked. What did you think of Nasheet Waits?
  15. LOL. Well you certainly covered all of the bases with that one
  16. Tonight I'm going to see Ravi and Anoushka Shankar (Norah's sister).
  17. I've been curious about this group, were they any good (or could you tell over the noise?). Another recent band that's entire ethic is based on sheer VOLUME is High On Fire from Oakland..their guitarist says he doesn't play guitar he plays feedback. I thought they were pretty .... interesting. I'm mean their performance was a very visceral experience that I'm not sure would transfer over well to recorded media. Though I can't speak w/ authority here seeing as I have never heard any of their recordings. I can't even say how the show I saw would compare to their other live shows because at this show they were recreating their first recording that was released 10 years ago.
  18. I saw a band called Sunn O))) on Thursday night. I can say that this show was, without a doubt, the LOUDEST concert I've attended. Even though I was wearing earplugs for the entire show and I was sitting in the way back of the room my ears were ringing the next morning when I woke up. I would say about 90% of the audience did not have any hearing protection.
  19. Hey I was pretty close - $152.50
  20. How much do you think this will end up going for? http://cgi.ebay.com/Ric-Colbeck-M-Osborne-...1QQcmdZViewItem I'm thinking at least $150 which probably doesn't rate as "ebay madness" but still.....
  21. Seriously. How many TV's in Red Sox Nation were turned off before the bottom of the 7th??
  22. J.D.DREW!
  23. Whew ... what a night here in downtown Philly. You would have thought the Phils won the WS with all of the noise last night. I only got about 4 hours of sleep but hey I'm not complaining. This town will absolutely EXPLODE if they somehow manage to win it all. Condolences to Noj and the rest of the Dodgers' fans. You guys have a good strong nucleus to build on and should be contending for years to come.
