  4. Over the weekend...
  5. Happy birthday to Jimmy Lyons! I'll be listening to the box set tonight.
  6. I read that too. What a damn shame ! Paul Pace and his staff were pretty well running the last bastion of independent jazz retailing in London and doing a good job of it I thought, with the interesting CD selection, some good 2nd hand bins and nice coffee shop, indeed one of the most pleasant such emporiums in Central London. Even some vinyl. I've spent pleasurable hours in that particular 'Rays'. Hope it doesn't mean the demise of 'Rays' but the total cynic in me suspects that the jazz will go and the cafe bit will expand. If so, I won't be buying many more over-priced books from Foyles. That's right - the bookshop business is being hit by Amazon etc on line sales, too. Even second hand shops are coming on as Amazon sellers, if they've got any sense. It's been a while since I visited Hay-on-Wye; perhaps I'll go there in the summer (if we have one next year). MG http://www.philly.com/philly/hp/news_updat...Book_Store.html Robin’s Book Store, a favorite haunt of the Philadelphia’s literati, announced last week that this will be its last holiday season. It will be closing up shop at the end of January. Early this afternoon there were a handful of customers at the store. The customers appeared suprised at the store's demise. The city’s oldest independent book seller, Robin’s has long hosted poetry readings and autograph signings at 108 S. 13th Street. “Operating a book store was always a better hobby than a way to make a living, but now it’s impossible” writes Larry Robin in a news release. “Blame it on the Economy. Blame it on the Chain Stores. Blame it on the Internet. Blame it on Reading Habits.” Robin’s grandfather, David, opened the original Robin’s 73 years ago on N. 11th Street. The store has a storied history as a hotbed of controversy. In 1961, then-Assistant District Attorney Arlen Specter and his boss, District Attorney James Crumlish, sought an injunction against Robin's for selling Henry Miller's Tropic of Cancer, which was denounced at the time as pornography. Every bookstore in Philadelphia pulled the novel from its shelves - except Robin's. "We sold 7,000 copies in one week," Robin told Inquirer reporter Alfred Lubrano on the store's 70th Anniversary.. "We were fighting for basic free speech. " Eventually, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the book was not obscene. From then on, Robin's was known as a kind of forbidden-fruit stand, a place where you could find savory items others lacked, and where people stood up for art and language.

  12. http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=ap-p...p&type=lgns Pistons punish Iverson after missing practice DETROIT (AP)—Allen Iverson apparently chose family and food over practice— and he’ll be fined for it. Iverson was the only player who didn’t show up when the Detroit Pistons worked out on Thanksgiving. Coach Michael Curry confirmed Iverson will be fined, will not start Friday night against the Milwaukee Bucks and might not play in the game for missing the practice. After Detroit traded for the superstar, Iverson insisted he would do whatever Curry wanted him to and even mocked his famous rant about practice while playing for the Philadelphia 76ers.
  13. He's Gone Rat in a drain ditch, caught on a limb, you know better but I know him. Like I told you, what I said, Steal your face right off your head. Now he's gone, now he's gone, Lord he's gone, he's gone. Like a steam locomotive, rollin' down the track He's gone, gone, nothin's gonna bring him back...He's gone. Nine mile skid on a ten mile ride, hot as a pistol but cool inside. Cat on a tin roof, dogs in a pile, Nothin' left to do but smile, smile, smile!!!! Now he's gone, now he's gone Lord he's gone, he's gone. Like a steam locomotive, rollin' down the track He's gone, gone, nothin's gonna bring him back...He's gone. Goin' where the wind don't blow so strange, Maybe off on some high cold mountain chain. Lost one round but the price wasn't anything, A knife in the back and more of the same. Same old, rat in a drain ditch, caught on a limb, You know better but I know him. Like I told you, what I said, Steal your face right off your head. Now he's gone, now he's gone Lord he's gone, he's gone. Like a steam locomotive, rollin' down the track He's gone, gone, nothin's gonna bring him back...He's gone. Ooh, nothin's gonna bring him back.

When the Turkey's Gone, Some People Are Thankful for What's Left --- 'Bone Lady' Finds Muse in Skeletal Remains, Turning Them Into Earrings, Necklaces, Toys By Robert Tomsho 1280 Words 26 November 2008 BANGOR, Pa. -- Although the Thanksgiving turkey may arrive at the holiday table as a culinary king, it leaves as a gristly carcass that some cooks can't wait to ditch. Janet Haddad wouldn't dream of it. Through the years, the high-school teacher has saved dozens of discarded birds from the dump. Known locally as "The Bone Lady," she spends the rest of the year taking them apart and cleaning the individual bones. Then, she turns them into toys, jewelry and decorations. With a little paint, vertebrae become place-card holders. Dyed neck bones adorned with tiny plastic eyes are transformed into quirky dragonlike creatures. Read the rest here.

  16. Don't know if the seller changed it or what, but the only "Loadstar" on ebay right now is a "Buy It Now" for $59.99 Two different auctions. The $29.99 is being sold by dadashampoo. The "Buy it now" is being sold by Euclid records.
  17. Probably because she wants $18.00 to ship it. So much for ebay cracking down on price gouging for shipping.
  18. Yeah, I have both Rip and Tayshaun on my fantasy team and I've been watching in horror as both of their numbers have been plummeting since the trade. My Sixers won today to climb above .500 for the first time this season.
  19. Have they come out and said it's Kolb's job for the rest of the season? Or was McNabb just canned for today's game, and be back next weekend? In the post-game conference Reid said he hadn't decided on who would be the starting QB on Thursday, but I don't see how he could bring back McNabb after benching him like that. Your team is down by 3 points at halftime in a MUST WIN game and you bench the starting QB of the past 10 years for a 2nd year back up who has thrown just 9 passes in his NFL career?? You don't make that move unless you have totally given up on your starting QB. And with that loss the season is all but over for the Eagles. They have nothing to play for now so what's the point of bringing McNabb back?? They might as well play Kolb and see how he does. The Philly papers are reporting that Reid didn't even tell McNabb he wasn't starting the 2nd half. Apparently he had one of his assistant coaches do the dirty work.
  20. Well that's the end of the Donovan McNabb era in Philly. Hopefully Andy Reid will go too.
