All-time classic Chewy post What I wouldn't give for a bit more EXUBERANCE in my life. Untempered joy. It was the pick-me-up and kick-my-ass I needed this morning. (The less said about my morning, the better.) Thanks, Chewy. Now, the presciption is clear, a dose of Hank. With the Messengers.

Since I don't know you personally, I'll just pop in here to wish you all the best and thank you for the enjoyment I've had listening to music with which you were involved.

I had a Rega, many generations ago. I liked mine with the "classic" Rega arm. But I'm afraid that doesn't help you much with the current incarnations. I really haven't heard a "discouraging word" about any of the three brands I originally mentioned. The integrated (arm/cartridge/'table) package does seem the way to go. What do you have for a pre-amp or receiver? Are you going to need a step up device or, perhaps, a phono preamp (if you have only line level inputs)? You may want to take into account the cartridge output and type (moving magnet versus moving coil versus "other") and the output. A high output cartridge may save you a few bucks by eliminating the need to step up the output.

Wish I had the time to go to Los Angeles. I remember (distantly) when Record City used to have two or three stalls at the Kobe Flea. I think I got every OOP Conn CD that I own there at 3 for $10.

Yellow pages, Yelp, Google list more than two dozen stores. Where's the quality shopping for a tight schedule? I'm not interested in vinyl, though most shops seem to have a vinyl focus - like just about everywhere these days. To make this thread a useful reference for the future, do go ahead and include the vinyl sellers.

There are lots of budget players on the market now. I don't have direct experience with any of them except Rega (which may be over your budget), but Music Hall and Project often get good words.

And me. I think I picked up all those old Alamac lps in some rack at a mall. I think it was back in Iowa City, but that was a long time ago in a galaxy far away.... gregmo If they only sold four copies, we've got the market cornered.

Thanks for this information. But I try to resist the temptation to buy for improved sound and bonus tracks. If I didn't, I'd have 84 copies of "Kind of Blue". (That's not a comment about Messrs. Nessa, or Johnson, of course.)

Here's one listener's "take",before he knew of the reissue (i.e., based on the LP.) Actually, that said, shouldn't this be in the Reissues subforum, rather than New Releases?

Are there any box bargains currently available?
Unk replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Compete Dexter Gordon on Blue Note 60s - $62.47, buy it now. (Just one, I assume) Seems like a deal to me. -
At first I thought, "Man, that is cool." Then I noticed the fact that it's a 45/7-inch. Now THAT is extra-COOL!

Thanks. I'll say you saved me ten bucks. I'll pass on this for $16, but if I see it for $6, maybe.

I'm on the verge of an impulse buy...

Don't know this gentleman, but the "reviews" and press releases are interesting, as are the sound samples. Search didn't reveal much here. Share what you know. Excerpt from Dusty Groove: Fitz originally hails from Jamaica, but worked heavily on the French, German, and Scandinavian scenes of the 70s – blowing some mighty mean tenor that has equal doses of Sonny Rollins and Albert Ayler – the amazingly fresh tone of the latter, and the soulful style of improvisation that marked the best bold work of the former. Yet Fitz is very much his own man too – as you'll hear in this hip selection of recordings pulled from some of his rare albums – beautiful work that features piano, electric piano, bass, drums, and congas – all brewed up together in a blend of spiritual and soul jazz styles, often with some slight African influences too – especially considering the use of congas. Excerpt from Amazon: Plastic Strip Press presents the rare recordings of Jamaican born saxophone player Fitz Gore and his group The Talismen recorded between the years 1975-1979. The selection is carefully picked by Gore's wife Gisela, and the material is sourced from three extremely rare private pressed LP's Soundmagnificat (1975), Soundnitia (1975), Soundmusication (1976), and the EP Soundnova (1979), all originally released by Gisela's and Fitz's private label GORBRA RECORDS, based in Bonn, Germany. ... For Gore the spiritual meanings - to be for real and authenticity - to play a meaning - was more important than to play licks. Gore lived for a period in London, Copenhagen and then in Paris where he acquainted with legendary musicians like Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin, Mal Waldron, Steve McCall, and Jimmy Woode (sound samples here too)

Just for my edification, can someone help me understand this "sample" promo language in the context of this discussion: "Licensed for promotional use only. Sale is prohibited." / "Item is to be returned to the distributor upon demand." I'm not really trying to be disingenuous here. Just trying to understand. I know it's unlikely I would buy a promo secondhand and have Mosaic come knocking on my door, late some night. Perhaps the prohibition on "sale" in unenforceable, so if I buy such an item, I am not aiding and abetting. But what are the legal considerations, from the seller perspective...beyond the "ethical"?

What Makes Music Expressive
Unk replied to Unk's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
When listening to the musical samples, you may also wish to consider which version is potentially the corny-est, without being corny. -
What Makes Music Expressive? Scientists have been trying to unravel what specific components of music make it emotionally expressive. The following quiz is based on research by Daniel Levitin, director of the laboratory for music perception, cognition and expertise at McGill University. Related Article»

Thanks for timely note. I saw a copy of this at local record store day and hesitated. This may push me over the edge. Haven't found samples on Amazon or elsewhere, hence the hesitation. (That said, I haven't looked all that hard over a $5 purchase.)

Don't recall seeing a mention here, and it seems like, overall, the publicity has been lighter this year. So just a reminder, it's Record Store Day. Maybe something happening near you.
