Hate to display my ignorance but who's Beeks? Sorry, I guess I was in an obtuse frame of mind. Yes, as Jsngry says, Clarence. aka King Pleasure. I would guess that you, medjuck, know him. But for any who don't I'd be doing a disservice if I didn't provide a formal introduction. Why isn't there a website fansite for this guy? At least not that a quick Bing showed.

I've enjoyed my chats with him - a nice cat. "Father of Vocalese" is a bit of a stretch though. Beeks? Babs? Jefferson?

While I don't fully understand the question/concept either, Wild Man Bobby Enriquez came to mind, as did Herman Foster. Milt Buckner too.

How To: Keep Up In A Jazz Conversation

I've often felt like I could use such a primer on movies and television, neither of which I'm conversant about, but frequently encounter in "polite" conversation - a situation I avoid as often as possible. -
How To: Keep Up In A Jazz Conversation

Has anyone here ever heard Armstrong or Ella criticized for crossover appeal? Even if it happened back in the day, it never happens now which is the whole point of the article - how to keep up in a jazz conversation today. What would you think if the examples were, say, Diana Krall and Norah Jones? I'd consider both on the "pop" side of the crossover spectrum, though both are assigned (by some people, not me) jazz cred. -
Hadn't you heard...? Music, newspapers, magazines, books, movies...if you have an internet connection (even one taken illegally, say from a business), it's all yours, by right.

Sorry. Wasn't paying attention over there. Thanks for setting me straight.

Agree completely on the Kamuca and on Heavy Love, Cohn's Xanadu duets with Jimmy Rowles (though these did come out again on CD (on Prevue?). I don't have the other Xanadus.

When I was growing up, the local (substantial!) record store burned down. The covers were all water damaged. The LPs, for the most part, survived - though some with a bit of superficial mold. The post-fire beginning price was a dollar each; they started lowering the price after that. It seems like about half the batch went at a dollar.

And I'm headed toward my local Lincoln dealer to pick up one of them new MKXV whatevers. Who needs a rebate, when you get nince months of the NY Times?
-
Sorry, my blind spot. I'd thought Ford (parent to Lincoln) didn't get a government bailout, a la GM and Chrysler. ...which isn't to say they didn't didn't get any US Government monies.

One of the biggest in the world. You see their stores everywhere. Yes, very financially successful too. An interesting business model.

I'm sorry, Lincoln who?

Just my experience. The symptoms of a tube needing replacement are 1) noise, 2) silence.

Any Blue Mitchell on Riverside Dizzy Reece's ASIA MINOR Jimmy Heath's REALLY BIG (or any Jimmy Heath on Riverside, for that matter) The Monk Prestige Box More great suggestions. The only one missing here is the Monk box. Not sure I have the financial appetite to digest this one now. You can't beat 3 discs at $9 each, the music is wondeful, and the sound is fantastic. Somehow I was thinking this was a bigger box. Just need to do a quick evaluation of what I've already got/overlap.

Any more recommendations? I happen to have each of Big Al's (thanks, Al), but find myself one item short of free shipping. I've got most of the 'core' jazz canon, so I'm looking on the periphery. شكرا

At $8.98 for a standard CD (including Keepnews Collection), less 10%, with free shipping (perhaps you can also avoid tax, where you live), it's not too bad. The new Trane box is there too.
