  1. Tonight on Jazz From Blue Lake, we celebrate the 87th birthday of saxophonist Ted Brown from 10 p.m. - 12 a.m. edt (seehttp://www.tedbrownjazz.com/). In addition to his flowing melodic improvisation, we'll check out music by Lena Bloch, a new live recording by Lennie Tristano's sextet from 1951, and the music of Warne Marsh. This program will also be available on-demand from Blue Lake Public Radio's web site during the day on Tuesday. Streaming live fromwww.bluelake.org/radio
  2. In the past Blue Lake Public Radio produced programs on Coleman Hawkins's great recordings of the 1930's with Fletcher Henderson and Red Allen; his extensive catalog from the 1940's; appearances on record with "the boppers" and Max Roach's "Freedom Now Suite;" his partnership with trumpeter Roy Eldridge; and his versions of "Body and Soul." Tonight we'll try something different, taking another angle in to the great saxophonist's 50 year recording career, starting with the riot in the studio that is "The Big Reunion." Please tune in: 10 p.m. - 3 a.m. streaming from www.bluelake.org/radio . Hawkins music will be featured in the first 20 minutes of each hour. Also, starting December 2nd you'll be able to hear the previous evening's Jazz From Blue Lake broadcast on-demand from our web site, www.bluelake.org/radio Jazz From Blue Lake airs Monday night from 10 p.m. to 12 a.m.; Tuesday through Friday from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m.; Saturday morning from 7 to 10; and Sunday night from 7 to 10. That's eastern time, same as NYC.
  3. "Müller, a former top jazz division executive at PolyGram and Universal, who is based in Madrid, says he’s targeting listeners who became enamored with the genre in their 20s, lost touch with it in their 30s and 40s, and want to reconnect with it in their 50s. “It probably has something to do with having kids,” he says. “We haven’t really analyzed it.”" In a basement session sometime in the 1990's, Chuck Nessa talked about this life pattern, and linked it to "manufactured nostalgia."
  4. Tonight on Jazz From Blue Lake the recorded legacy of drummer/music educator Gene Krupa:http://www.drummerworld.com/drummers/Gene_Krupa.html. Please join Blue Lake from 10 p.m. - 3 a.m. via www.bluelake.org/radio.html
  5. Azar's blowin' up on the new Franklin Kiermyer album "Further."
  6. Steve Reynolds wrote, "The audience at the concert last week in Montclair, NJ was pretty much a microcosm of the community. Mixed races, ages, sexes, etc. " That's the jazz audience -- it is everyone who's interested in musical ideas. In our time, the marketing world we live in does not deal with that level of real democratic listenership. It pulls it apart and goes after component parts. And it's so sophisticated that when it encounters the type of challenges faced by marketing jazz, which is more sophisticated than today's marketing model predictors, it's the inability to reach the market that fails, not the music's ability to reach human truths that resonate across the human community.
  7. Wasn't it with a cymbal sound like "the wind passing through the fir trees" or something like that?

  9. Yes, thanks for hipping me to this, Larry. Didn't know that it was originally a "call and repeat," and that Armstrong made it something else. MOre from Ricki Riccardi at the Armstrong House Museum: http://dippermouth.blogspot.com/2009/12/80-years-of-rockin-chair.html
  10. I see. He sounds weary, forlorn, fogged by it all.

  12. What does he say that isn't in the script of the song?
  13. There's irony in the title as it comes from a newspaper article about Pepper from year's back, which infers the general insensitivity to the people and music the press was reporting on.
  14. Wonder if Sonny was thinking about his wife on "Solo Sonny" as he strings together "Dearly Beloved," "The Nearness of You," "Someone To Watch Over Me," "The Song Is You," "Old Suzannah," "It Never Entered My Mind."....
  15. "Solo Sonny" is just a ball, as he freely associates through his voluminous mental songbook -- who's going to write down all the tunes and identify all the sources for those riffs he sews together? If this were a drinking game, we'd be drunk in 90 seconds!
  16. Teddy Edwards on clarinet, which is different. Maggie on "Mop Mop"? Gawdahmighty. The Philo sides are new to me. Good liners. The disc gives a fuller picture of the entertainment nature of the scene and how avant Mags music was within the community. That bebop-boogie thing -- who talks that talk anymore?
  17. Thanks all. Yes, I'm working on the air tonight. Woo hoo: fundraiser time! Streaming from http://www.bluelake.org/radio.html if you can stomach the pledge breaks we're featuring the music of Percy Heath.

  19. The phrase "blind drunk" comes from this period for the same reasons mentioned. I'm down with the people of the time who found the government's actions unconscionable.
  20. House cleaning: Looks like "I'm a Leaf For Today" and "Child of Night" were flipped in the programming or printing.....
  21. Getting some feedback elsewhere. Appears that Clayton and Hines don't play together on these; that the Tiara release compiles sides recorded by Hines for Nocturne with a so far unidentified session by Clayton. http://jazzdiscogcorner.pagesperso-orange.fr/discographies_%20labels/n/nocturne/instrumentals/h/hines_earl/discography/nocturne_earlhines_1954.
  22. (Begin forwarded message) Hi folks, "Channeling Coltrane" is coming to a Chicago screen on May 3 at 5 PM. It consists of both a 45 minute documentary on the making of "Electric Ascension" - the whys and hows of Rova's adaptation of John Coltrane's Ascension for a 12 or 13 piece ensemble - plus the 67 minute performance of EA from Guelph Jazz Festival 2012, the product of a 5-camera video shoot, and hopefully with excellent 5.1 Surround Sound provided by the venue. (The mixing job for the 5.1 Surround is a thing of beauty, made from a 24 channel recording.) Concert performance includes Chicago musicians Hamid Drake, Rob Mazurek, and Nels Cline (in the sense that he's Wilco's lead guitarist) and Chris Brown (born there, though he's a CA native at this point), as well as other great ones: Fred Frith, Carla Kihlstedt, Jenny Scheinman, Ikue Mori and Rova SQ. Pithy comments in the documentary from: Andrew Cyrille, Nels Cline, Eyvind Kang, Jenny Scheinman, Elliott Sharpe, Jason Kao Hwong, among others. Both films directed by John Rogers of Ideas in Motion. More info at: http://bayimproviser.com/ea.html It will be part of the CIMM Fest in Chicago, our film screening on May 3 at 5 PM. Showing at The Society for the Arts 1112 N Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL 60642. http://cimmfest.org/rova-channeling-coltrane/ I'll be in for this showing too. Hope to see you at the movies. (By the way, CIMM Fest looks loaded with cool films this year. Check out the CIMM Fest website for schedule.) And sure, I'd love to bring Rova in there and play this live sometime, but this really sounds great and it traverses many musical plains; it's a beautiful ride. Give props to director John Rogers for this one. I have attached an interesting article by critic Stuart Broomer, written in the six or nine months after he saw the Electric Ascension show in Guelph, Ontario that is now recorded on this concert film. If you're interested in Coltrane's Ascension, and that era, there's a lot to think about in this article. First published in "Point of Departure," an online jazz and improvised music magazine last fall.. ======================= performances in Chicago: I Have a couple of shows lined up in the days before the screening too: Playing with DAVE REMPIS, TIM DAISY and JASON ADASIEWICZ @ Elastic Arts on FRIDAY, May 2 = part of the Chicago Intl Music + Movies festival schedule rather than part of the Elastic regular series on Thursdays. Show at 9 PM. A double bill. We will start around 10 PM. (Elastic Arts 2830 N Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL 60618) Before that, on Wednesday, April 30 at approximately 8 PM, I will hook up with the great MARS WILLIAMS and three special players coming on tour to Chicago from France: Julien Desprez (elg), Mathieu Sourisseau (acoustic bass guitar), Samuel Silvant (dm). This show taking place, for a change, on the South Side: Rebuild Foundation / Dorchester Projects – Archive House / 6916 South Dorchester Avenue 60637 rebuild-foundation.org And if you want off this list, just let me know by putting "take me off this list" in the subject when you reply. stay tuned, Larry Ochs www.ochs.cc www.rova.org
