Nice piece! Sounds like Sunday's going to be a special night -- on Horace Silver's birthday, no less. -
Blue Lake Public Radio celebrates the anniversary of Count Basie's birth with a special program tonight from 10 p.m. 3 a.m.Unlike previous retrospective programs on Basie, tonight's broadcast starts with the mid-1950's break out album "Count Basie Swings, Joe Williams Sings," and in the first 20 minutes of each hour we'll zoom in on the albums that followed: "April In Paris," the Basie/Williams standards album, "E=MC2...," the Williams/Lambert, Hendricks and Ross plus Basie Band recording, and the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival recording. Add to that Von Freeman interpreting music associated with the Basie band (Every Tub, Blue Prez, Swingin' the Blues and Lester Leaps In), and you can see what kind of August evening you're in for. Please join us on WBLV FM 90.3/WBLU FM 88.9 or streaming live from the Blue Lake Public Radio free app for iPhone or Android devices, and via http://www.bluelake.org/radio.html

Too bad a couple of those You Tube videos were yanked. Nice stuff. Yes, you have to follow copyright; it was good to hear them, though.

He took it so far, musically. The Berlin concert....the solo version of "If I Should Lose You" from the Chicago Cultural Center.....Musicians who play song form, this is as far as it goes in jazz. Sad news. A great loss. And an undeniable force for what jazz does in and for the community.

The accumulations of different origins, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, filtered by contemporary, uniquely American experiences, have produced a cornucopia of new music; a blending of improvisational-avant jazz with the composers’ own—often multiple--artistic/cultural roots. In the tradition of Edgefest the roster includes international musicians as well as performers and ensembles from our home community of Southeast Michigan and showcases some of the most celebrated and creative multi-instrumentalists on the scene today. The community is invited to attend all educational and Fringe events free of charge. Discover FRINGE at the EDGE As part of the 10th anniversary of Edgefest in 2006, KCH created a series of free public performance events which took place during the days and early evenings in restaurants, cafés and galleries in downtown Ann Arbor, featuring some of the areas most accomplished creative musicians. The Fringe project, now a festival staple, has been very successful in moving creative and imaginative music making out of the conventional concert hall venue and into public spaces such as bars, restaurants and markets. This year, the Fringe series will surprise, delight, and educate an audience that might not otherwise have ventured into the concert hall setting of Edgefest. Details of the Fringe events will be announced soon. Past venues have included Argiero’s Restaurant, the sh’AUT space in Braun Court, and Sweetwaters Café in Kerrytown. His rare ability to synthesize South Indian music concepts with a seemingly boundless range of unexpected influences frequently characterizes him as one of the most important artists in the music today -- a distinction the Jazz Journalists Association recently echoed by naming him Alto Saxophonist of the Year three consecutive times from 2009-2011. Since the 2009 release of the album Apti, the tabla and guitar-studded Indo-Pak Coalition has provided a more playful take on Mahanthappa's symbiosis between the music of his ancestors and the jazz he grew up listening to in Colorado. The Nessa Juggernaut rolls on

46 years ago today there was "Sound." -
Have just stuck my nose in this. Didn't know Clint Eastwood slowed down Hartman's Beehive record when using it in the soundtrack to "Bridges of Madison County." Didn't know Eastwood as a teenager snuck into a club to hear the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band with Hartman in it. Didn't know Hartman's last studio recording session was for the adult entertainment "The Devil in Miss Jones, II." There's way more than that stuff here, just saying that with a skim through the discography, some of the end notes, and the first few chapters, this is an informative read. http://johnnyhartmanbook.com/

Was remembering Marshall Allen's alto saxophone solo feature with the Sun Ra Arkestra on "Over the Rainbow." Shrieking! Might have happened in a medley of songs about being "up," "Let's Go Fly A Kite," "How High the Moon"? Remember that? Tonight on Jazz From Blue Lake we're playing the Paul Gonzalves to Allen's Johnny Hodges: the great tenor saxophone soloist for 40 years with the Sun Ra Arkestra, Chicagoan John Gilmore. We'll hear him with Ra, Elmo Hope, Freddie Hubbard and Andrew Hill, too: 10 p.m. - 3 a.m. via http://www.bluelake.org/radio.html Yes, Blowin' In From Chicago, too.
