For what it's worth there's another new biography of Parker by a K.C. historian named Chuck Haddix called "The Life and Music of Bird." Interesting story there about Bird as a teen going out to a hit at the Lake of the Ozarks and on the way the car was in an accident and rolled several times. They took Bird back to K.C. and what did the doctor give him for pain? Heroin.

Blake's Abbey Lincoln Tribute is beautiful. He played it live in Kalamazoo for the Gilmore Keyboard Festival a couple of years ago (on my birthday). Blue Lake Public Radio has broadcast that concert a few times since. The excerpt from Primacy of the Ear about Abbey is good stuff, talking about his days as a waiter at the Jazz Gallery when Max Roach was getting ready his Freedom Now Suite for recording.

Dr. Lonnie Smith's "Come Together," where he mumbles his own words, on the album "Rise Up," and drummer David Ashkenazy's version of "I Want You" from 2009's "Out With It" on Posi-Tone are, if nothing else, fun.
