"Is That All There Is? The Strange Life of Peggy Lee," the new biography by James Gavin is the starting point for a special three hour radio program tonight, 7- 10 p.m. est on Blue Lake Public Radio. For three hours we'll listen to the music of Peggy Lee and an interview with her biographer James Gavin streaming live from www.bluelake.org/radio . From her early 1940's recordings with Benny Goodman, to her first hit records with husband Dave Barbour, to the mega-hit "Fever," Blue Lake celebrates the music of one of the 20th Century's most enduring popular singers and songwriters

Thank you, Jim. Very much. We are now going to make available our previous evening's jazz program on line for 24 hours after it broadcasts. The program airs live Monday through Friday, 10 p.m. - 3 a.m. eastern standard time. I record Saturday morning, 7-10 a.m. and Sunday night 7-10 p.m. Here's last night's broadcast, starting about 2:30, featuring vocalist Catherine Russell: http://199.176.235.218/ondemand/17-1-20141212.mp3

Nessa came on Jazz From Blue Lake in the 1980's and shared some of his considerable Blue Note lp library with us. Today, he dropped by to be interviewed by the BBC about "A Love Supreme." Tonight, late, we'll play an 18 minute piece from his phenomenal Bobby Bradford album recorded in March. That has Ingebracht Haker Flaten playing bass, who appeared at Edge Fest in Ann Arbor this October. Last week a trio of Norwegien improvisers called Ballrogg -- bass, clarinets and slide guitar, more or less, and not about Tolkein, it's a variation on Norwegian's prononounciation of Roger...you'll have to tune in -- came by the station and recorded a live performance that will air next week. The day before this incredible singer/pianist Jesus freak named Ashely Gonzalez Daneman came in with a quartet and recorded an hour of her "Beauty Indestructable" original music with trumpet, electric bass and drums (20 and 30 something's) which airs Saturday morning at about 8:45, and includes a ball your eyes out improvisation on "Silent Night" (really, I have to say something in front of God and everyone after that?). And Sunday night from 7 to 10 I just put together a three hour program on the music of Peggy Lee featuring 15 edited talk parts with Lee biographer James Gavin. So, thats part of a week on the radio, especially for our local audience, our primary audience. Tonight we'll celebrate McCoy Tyner's birthday in the first 20 minutes of each hour, but feeling fuzzy on it as he played the Gilmore Keyboard Festival in Kalamazoo and St. Cecilia Music Center in Grand Rapids within the past two years and we went way, way into his thing....tonight's going to be a ramble...starts at 10, goes to 3 a.m. And if it works will be available on our web site during the day tomorrow. So,yes, I love playing jazz on the radio...

With Dave Brubeck coming up tonight on Jazz From Blue Lake, it's a good time to look back on the pianist/composer/bandleader's historic performances in Grand Rapids. There were others, including a broadcast on Buck Matthews WOOD television program with Chris Brubeck and Danny Brubeck, as well as a Grand Rapids Symphony pops concert later in his career, but the appearances at Fountain Street Church changed the music's image in the city. Here is an overview of Carolyn Heines participation in producing those concerts :http://www.westmichmusichystericalsociety.com/fsc/

Tonight on Jazz From Blue Lake, we celebrate the 87th birthday of saxophonist Ted Brown from 10 p.m. - 12 a.m. edt (seehttp://www.tedbrownjazz.com/). In addition to his flowing melodic improvisation, we'll check out music by Lena Bloch, a new live recording by Lennie Tristano's sextet from 1951, and the music of Warne Marsh. This program will also be available on-demand from Blue Lake Public Radio's web site during the day on Tuesday. Streaming live fromwww.bluelake.org/radio

In the past Blue Lake Public Radio produced programs on Coleman Hawkins's great recordings of the 1930's with Fletcher Henderson and Red Allen; his extensive catalog from the 1940's; appearances on record with "the boppers" and Max Roach's "Freedom Now Suite;" his partnership with trumpeter Roy Eldridge; and his versions of "Body and Soul." Tonight we'll try something different, taking another angle in to the great saxophonist's 50 year recording career, starting with the riot in the studio that is "The Big Reunion." Please tune in: 10 p.m. - 3 a.m. streaming from www.bluelake.org/radio . Hawkins music will be featured in the first 20 minutes of each hour. Also, starting December 2nd you'll be able to hear the previous evening's Jazz From Blue Lake broadcast on-demand from our web site, www.bluelake.org/radio Jazz From Blue Lake airs Monday night from 10 p.m. to 12 a.m.; Tuesday through Friday from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m.; Saturday morning from 7 to 10; and Sunday night from 7 to 10. That's eastern time, same as NYC.

BusinessWeek on Sony/Okeh
Lazaro Vega replied to GA Russell's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
"Müller, a former top jazz division executive at PolyGram and Universal, who is based in Madrid, says he’s targeting listeners who became enamored with the genre in their 20s, lost touch with it in their 30s and 40s, and want to reconnect with it in their 50s. “It probably has something to do with having kids,” he says. “We haven’t really analyzed it.”" In a basement session sometime in the 1990's, Chuck Nessa talked about this life pattern, and linked it to "manufactured nostalgia." -

Steve Reynolds wrote, "The audience at the concert last week in Montclair, NJ was pretty much a microcosm of the community. Mixed races, ages, sexes, etc. " That's the jazz audience -- it is everyone who's interested in musical ideas. In our time, the marketing world we live in does not deal with that level of real democratic listenership. It pulls it apart and goes after component parts. And it's so sophisticated that when it encounters the type of challenges faced by marketing jazz, which is more sophisticated than today's marketing model predictors, it's the inability to reach the market that fails, not the music's ability to reach human truths that resonate across the human community.

Yes, thanks for hipping me to this, Larry. Didn't know that it was originally a "call and repeat," and that Armstrong made it something else. MOre from Ricki Riccardi at the Armstrong House Museum: http://dippermouth.blogspot.com/2009/12/80-years-of-rockin-chair.html -
