Strangely, I had both eyes done while still in my 40's. Chose the lens which gives me good distance sight, so now wear tri-focals for a tweak at distance, focus at mid range and the ability to read. Walking down stairs can be tricky if I have on my most rectangular glasses. A few months after the surgery had to go back in for a laser zap as things were fogging over again. Since then, no problems, except when I get real high and drive at night, then there are rainbows and little bears and these floating chameleons in my vision, which cause me to weave like that grinning Dean Moriarity.

From Henry Johnson's Facebook page: R.I.P. Leon Spencer Jr. One serious jazz organist that I met in 1976 in Houston, Texas. He played and recorded with a lot of jazz legends. http://dougpayne.blogspot.com/2009/06/whatever-happened-to-leon-spencer.html

Lunch The way she tore into her food he knew, yes he did: the crack of teeth through the skin of the fruit, the nom-nom-nom ravenous mastication of the pulp, the juice wetting each side of her mouth and dripping with delicious abandon on to the table alongside her plate – oh yes, this was the one. She was a danger to all men. “We will call,” he said, placing the napkin down as he stood up. Then swallowing a last sip, he walked away, stealing a glance as she opened her mouth wide, tongue out, for another bite. They were waiting in the car. “Yes. She’s the one,” he said before folding into the back seat and closing the door. Anyone on the sidewalk could hear, and someone did. The second car pulled up as the town car pulled away. This is bad, he thought to himself. They were watching. What was she doing? What had she done? The impressed sensation of her thighs across his still kept him warm despite the vicious chill of the wind. He wanted to get out of it, go around the corner of the building, but they weren’t to be trusted. Thoughts of screw drivers, hammers and kitchen knives circled under his wool cap, but the fear in his imagination froze him standing, dreading. He was no hero. But he could talk. Then it happened. The street convulsed like a blanket, tossing cars into the air like a game played by cheer leaders; the building across the alley split open and fell with horrible weight, desks and files and chairs spilling out amid broken walls and hissing, rending pipes. A light pole crashed violently between the restaurant and their car, sending missiles of chunky glass in every direction, breaking windows in the cars parked on the street. Theirs! He didn’t know he acted, couldn’t remember how he got to her – she was terrified, then surprised by him. The back of the building fell away, and they ran out of it. Later, as they sat in the dark city at each end of her table, empty but for candles and questions, her appetite much suppressed, he looked at her, and he knew: this was safe. With her, he was safe.

That's Ben with Harry and Red on that RCA session "Just A Mood"?

As a teenager Red Norvo excelled in a novelty marimba ensemble, then he heard the music of Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Earl Hines and other early jazz greats and became a convert. Like the great Coleman Hawkins, Norvo was open to young musicians with new ideas, and though a swing player at heart, recording with Paul Whiteman and Benny Goodman, he was open to musical changes in the 1940's, bringing Dizzy Gillespie and Charlier Parker into his "Selected Septet," recording with Woody Herman, hiring bassist Charles Mingus, and recording with Shorty Rogers and Jimmy Guiffre. You could spend hours listening to the great recordings Norvo made in the 1930's, especially with his wife, vocalist Mildred Bailey (Mr. and Mrs. Swing). The xylophone and vibes of Red Norvo tonight, 10 p.m. - 3 a.m., on Blue Lake Public Radio, http://www.bluelake.org/radio.html

Jazz from Blue Lake Sunday Night
Lazaro Vega replied to Lazaro Vega's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
Thanks Larry. Was leaving it so Chuck's reply made sense to anyone reading. So, tonight, Jim, we're playing the Perdidos back to back. The Paris Concert version is faster, much to Ellington's delight, and I see what you mean about the two tenors. They sound rich. Hamilton then comes back on clarinet? Later, in the 11 o'clock hour, we'll hear Flip's version. -
Great jazz tonight with tenor saxophonist Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis. Check out his edgy lines, raucous sound, great ability to catch a "ride" (playing one note repeatedly buy varying the rhythm and fingering) and bebop moves with the Count Basie Orchestra of the 1950's, the Eddie Lockjaw Davis/Johnny Griffin "Toughest Tenors" band of the 1960's, Harry Edison in the 1970's, and organist Shirley Scott on standards and blues. Jazz From Blue Lake, 10 p.m. to midnight eastern from http://www.bluelake.org/radio.html

Jazz from Blue Lake Sunday Night
Lazaro Vega replied to Lazaro Vega's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
That makes sense -- the line is so fluid and improvisational in character it's hard to imagine as anything other than a transcribed improvisation. Will check out the two tenor version -- Hamilton on tenor never sounded that "lithe" to me -- more gut bucket. -
Jazz from Blue Lake Sunday Night
Lazaro Vega replied to Lazaro Vega's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
Ha! Thanks guys. Yes, did mention Wilson. That long unison passage at the front is so swinging, even ol' Flip Phillips JATP (!) solo on Perdido might take a back seat to it. -
Tonight on Jazz From Blue Lake from 7 to 8 p.m. we'll hear classic jazz by Louis Armstrong, the great version of "Perdido" from Duke Ellington's "Piano in the Background" album, plus new records. At 8 please stay with Blue Lake for a radio special on Ray Charles, Singular Genius, followed by "Jazz on the Side" at 9 and a program on Duke Ellington in the 1940's at 10 p.m. with David Brent Johnson on Nightlights. All coming up on http://www.bluelake.org/radio.html
-
Remember that Miles Davis Quintet in Europe 1967 3-CD/1-DVD set that came out last year, the one with Miles, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams playing some of the same pieces completely differently at three separate concerts in October and November? Blue Lake Public Radio will highlight that music tonight from 10 p.m. - 3 a.m. as I celebrate my 29th anniversary with the station (3-1-1983). We'll also hear from Ralph Towner, Vinny Golia and The Henry Threadgill Sextet. Hope you'll join us, http://www.bluelake.org/radio.html

On this final night of Black History Month, Blue Lake Public Radio features the Afro-centric music of Chicago percussionist and former AACM president Kahil El Zabar. Out On Blue Lake (12 a.m.) features the El'Zabar's Ritual Trio with Pharoah Sanders live at the Wealthy Theater, Grand Rapids, May, 2001. New (Unreleased) Studio + Live Wes Montgomery in March!
Lazaro Vega replied to Eric's topic in New Releases
Been playing this on the radio -- that "After Hours" is fun, especially because of the crowd, and for anyone who knew him or heard him in Detroit, pianist Earl Van Riper. Rhyne plays piano on Nica's Dream. -
Don Byron starts Black History Month on Blue Lake
Lazaro Vega replied to Lazaro Vega's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
As a young teen Hank Jones was playing territory bands here in Michigan -- perhaps with Benny Carew -- when Lucky Thompson befriended the pianist and invited him to New York to play in trumpeter Hot Lips Page's band. The rest, as they say, is history. Hank Jones duet recording with Charlie Haden, "Come Sunday," was recorded a year ago and is the primary focus tonight on Jazz From Blue Lake, 10 p.m. - 3 a.m. eastern. After the 1 a.m. Jazz Datebook we'll plug in to the electric music of Robert Glasper and Nicholas Payton (who are both playing concerts here within days) and hear bits of our interview with Payton about his album "Bitches." Hope you'll give us your partially undivided attention: streaming live from http://www.bluelake.org/radio.html. -

Jim, He plays in Grand Rapids on Thursday, February 9th. So, next week Monday we'll feature his teacher Alvin Batiste; Tuesday, Ellis Marsalis; Wednesday, Nic. Been running our interview with him throughout the program all week, though. Usually comes up after the half hour mark. Been mostly running his discussion of #BAM. Have you heard Tar Baby's album "The End of Fear"? LV -
