  1. Hi again, Matthew—just got confirmation that the poll is indeed happening again and will once more be hosted by NPR.
  2. Some of the Rubberband sessions turned up on this set: Miles Davis: Warner Years 1986-91
  3. Just got this in the mail today—the sound is amazing. (I’ve only listened to disc 1 so far, but can’t imagine there’ll be a dropoff in quality on disc 2.) Excellent booklet, too; I’d say this is my favorite reissue/historical release of the year, or at least neck-and-neck with Mosaic’s Savory set.
  4. Happy birthday to a wonderful gentleman, great guy, well-read, well-schooled-in-jazz, and best-ever Manchester host!!!
  5. Last week's Night Lights show now up for online listening: Jazz Scene San Francisco
  6. Just bought my ticket to the Gary Bartz-Pharoah Sanders show.
  7. Prompted by starting the new Dexter Gordon biography:
  8. Award-winning documentarian Todd Gould (For Gold And Glory: Charlie Wiggins And The African-American Racing Car Circuit) stopped by my weekday afternoon jazz program yesterday to discuss his new film about Gennett Records. It debuts on our sister station WTIU Sunday, November 25 at 8 p.m. EST and will be distributed nationally next year: The Music Makers Of Gennett Records: Todd Gould Talks About His New Film ... more about the film on the WTIU website, and here's a trailer:
  9. Thanks--I've been considering checking that one out as well, so your nudge should do it.
  10. I don't know enough of the respective histories to weigh in on the Lee vs. Kirby debate, but I am about halfway through an excellent book devoted to Kirby's life and work: Kirby: King Of Comics
  11. I'm listening right now to a CD-R I made years ago from the station's old vinyl copy of Iapetus... is the recent Solid reissue well-done?
  12. I just put it in this forum since he wasn't a musician (well, as far as I know, anyway ). Regarding some of the comments about comic books above, we need look no further than Mr. Wayne Shorter (whose love of the form extends to helping to pen a graphic superhero novel that accompanies his latest release on Blue Note).
  13. Just saw a note about it on NPR's rundown for All Things Considered this evening--here's a CNN item: Stan Lee Dead At 95 More in-depth obituary at New York Times
  14. Last week's Night Lights show delved into the early jazz years of producer Quincy Jones' career: Q Is For Jazz: Quincy Jones
  15. WFIU jazz office/home of Night Lights:
  16. I have a framed copy of this poster that a listener gave to me (it belonged to her late husband) hanging on the wall in the station’s jazz office:
  17. I think we’ll definitely see the Louis Armstrong 1950s Columbia set as well—no updates to offer re when, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see it emerge sometime later next year.
