C'mon, man, it's winter! (Seriously, though, I did not see any. Evidently some migrate, and some stay.)

Longer version of the interview with Matt Salinger. Weirdly enough, I paid a visit to the Central Park carousel several weeks ago while I was in NYC, given that it's hallowed ground for a Salinger fan. A somewhat overcast, cold and windy wintry day, very Holden-like weather for it.

I wasn't able to find one--only some very short threads about new Steeplechase releases and two devoted to the box-set--but the longer thread consisted almost entirely of shipping/purchase or other comments, and the shorter one was mostly general endorsements of the box itself. This topic, however, is making me realize that there's a lot of Dexter on Steeplechase that I need to track down... all that I have besides the trio/quartet box seems to be More Than You Know and the 1973 Montmartre Summit with Jackie McLean.

You may well be correct. The best solution for anybody not wanting to go whole-hog on the box set may be to pick two or three of the better albums from that period. I've been thinking about revisiting the trio/quartet box anyway, since I'm about to get to that period in Maxine Gordon's new biography.

I have a friend who's looking for a good compilation of Dexter's recordings for Steeplechase. I mentioned the trio and quartet box set to him, but has there ever been a single or double CD or LP anthology of Gordon's work for the label? My initial searches didn't seem to turn up one.

Bumping for a friend who has made inquiries to me about good places to see live jazz in Seattle. I suggested Jazz Alley, but she replied that " Jazz Alley seems to be a more big name spot and expensive....looking for more intimate place, local musicians even." Any ideas, Northwesterners, or those with a visiting knowledge of the city?

That sounds very much like Amelie, although she’s adjusted to my bedtime reading habits by lying across my abdomen, behind the book instead of between it and my face, until I’m ready to go to sleep. The primary difficulty now comes when she attempts to sit on my lap (which occurs regularly) while I’m in my chair reading a medium or larger-sized book. Her version of lapsitting occupies most of my chest and is most conducive to either cellphone gazing or smaller books, such as Oxford’s VSI series. Active discouragement and forced cat-to-sofa transfers have been known to occur from time to time.

The new Dolphy is excellent—very good sound, the new master track with Davis is quite fine, the alternates interesting to listen to as well. It’s in mono, which threw me at first (I think my old CDs are in stereo) as apparently the original stereo mixes have gone missing? The booklet’s fantastic too, especially James Newton’s introductory comments.

I got it from a seller on Discogs—good deals to be found there sometimes, although if you’re a U.S. buyer and the seller’s in Europe (or vice-versa) the shipping fees can be pretty steep. I got lucky with the Ferguson—it was a great price, the seller was stateside, and the shipping fee was waived because of a mixup on a previous order I’d placed.
