  1. We’re re-airing this program this week, but I’m upping the thread today in honor of the anniversary of Jaco’s birth: “The Greatest Bass Player In The World: Jaco Pastorius”
  2. The Gary Bartz concert has been rescheduled for Thursday, January 10, which is a bummer for me, because I'll no longer be in NYC at this point. They quickly refunded my money, which I'll probably end up applying to the Monday, January 7 The Bad Plus/Terri Lyne Carrington/Terence Blanchard show instead. Bartz was rescheduled because of a memorial tribute for Roy Hargrove taking place that same Tuesday night uptown at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. I'll probably try to attend that as well.
  3. Listening this morning to this Prestige release for the first time in many years, and am stunned to read how much material was left off the original 1977 2-LP release—11 songs in all, plus an Ellington hits medley. I understand the original omission, given that the issued material ran to 100 minutes, and Prestige was trying to keep it at double-LP length... but why wasn’t the extra material added to the 1991 CD reissue, which could have easily accommodated much if not all of it? There’s no added note to the 1991 CD version explaining whether or not those recordings were still available, or why they were not included in a format that offered additional space.
  4. I’ve purchased several items from this seller in the past week, including the Maynard Ferguson and Count Basie Live Mosaics, and wanted to hip youse guys to 17 other Mosaics, Mosaic Selects, and Mosaic Singles that he’s offering at what seem to me to be very reasonable prices. (I don’t know the seller and am not benefitting in any way from potential sales.) Seller Jeheld Mosaic items at discogs Good luck to anybody who finds something there that they’ve been looking for!
  5. Sending a PM on the Bing Crosby Radio collection on the Shout label. You beat me to it! Followup also sent re: Rosemary Clooney Concord Songbook set. A lot of excellent items for sale here--I just have them already!
  6. Upping this in light of the new WTIU documentary (a version of which we'll soon have an online link to as well): Gennett Days: Hot Jazz From The Heartland
  7. Just that they feel thinner, lighter, a little less sturdy. I haven't had any break on me, but the weight feels oh-so-slightly different. Could be my imagination, and I don't really have any concerns about it, but I noticed it yet again when I was removing one of the discs from the recent Lester Young set here at work.
  8. Perhaps an odd query, but have Mosaic CDs gotten thinner in recent years? Between working in record stores and handling CDs all the time at home and at work, I've gotten fairly sensitive to the weight of a standard CD (I can usually tell if a case is missing the CD before I open it) and some of the CDs from the past few Mosaics feel just a tad lighter to me than those from older editions. Not sure that it matters, just curious if anybody else has had this perception.
  9. That would be my suggested way of obtaining it, just because of all the other great music that comes with that set--is it OOP now, though?
  10. I need to revisit that one—it’s been too long! In the mood today for one of my all-time favorite Mosaics:
  11. We re-aired New Vibes: Gary Burton In The 1960s this past week on Night Lights, and it remains archived for online listening.
  12. The mid-to-late 1940s Columbia set? That's an awesome collection, for anybody who doesn't have it and is interested. Excellent liners by Loren Schoenberg, too.
  13. Listening again this Sunday morning, and the sonic detail and clarity of this reissue is stunning. This set is really deepening my appreciation for NORK, and the notes on both the band and the recordings are well-researched and insightful. Highly recommended for anybody with an interest in early jazz.
  14. Reissue of the year for me: 👍
  15. The notion is that Harper, a former catcher, would switch to first base. Either that or he goes into left field and Stanton stays primarily at DH. Brett Gardner will surely be used only as a backup outfielder (and don't even mention Jacoby Ellsbury, who's a pure salary dump at this point whether he's able to play or not). Plus Harper would be a lefthanded hitter in a lineup that's currently stacked too much with righthanded hitting (he'd love that short right-field porch) who also has an excellent OBP whether he's having a good BA year or not, due to the sheer number of walks he's issued. Machado is toxic and is who he is at this point, whatever he may say to Hal Steinbrenner about his playing approach. I also agree that NY should pursue more pitching--picking up Paxson was a huge help in that regard. Sign Corbin next, and you'll still have money to sign Harper.
  16. I wouldn’t count out the possibility of Bryce Harper signing with the Yankees just yet: Yankees reportedly in contact with Harper The notion of Harper becoming a Yankee excites me. The notion of Machado becoming a Yankee depresses me. It would be the dawning of the A-Rod 2.0 era.
